The Last Meeting: North Greenville carried the lead into the third quarter but 15 unanswered points in the second half would leave the Crusaders shaking their heads following a 30-27 loss to the Mars Hill Lions. The Crusaders led 20-15 as the third quarter started but a seven play 95-yard drive would give the Lions their first lead of the game. NGU took an early lead in the first quarter, which was quickly evened by Mars Hill as the two squads matched first quarter field goals. North Greenville eventually nabbed the lead back with a touchdown as took his own pass (See here) back 47-yards for one of the wildest touchdown passes in all of college football for a touchdown, giving NGU a 10-3 lead. The Lions again matched the NGU touchdown but a missed point after would leave the score at 10-9. Another field goal from Justin Gravely and a fumble recovery by NGU would extend NGU’s lead to 20-9. The Lions tacked on another touchdown before halftime to cut NGU’s lead to just five. A pair of touchdowns less than 10 minutes a part would give the Lions a 30-20 lead with just over 11-minutes left in the game. Nelson Hughes would hook-up with Tyrell Hillary with nine minutes left in the game to cut the deficit to three. NGU’s last gasp would come with two minutes on the clock. North Greenville’s last drive ended on a failed fourth down conversion as the Crusaders elected to skip a possible game tying field goal in hopes to earn the win over the Lions.

Game Preview: NGU vs. MARS HILL
North Greenville hits the road for the third time this season, making the first of two trips to North Carolina in 2015. North Greenville will head north to take on Mars Hill University, a program very familiar to North Greenville faithful. The series matchup has not been favorable for NGU, trailing 10-1 in the overall series record. North Greenville’s only win against the Lions of the South Atlantic Conference came in 2011 when the Crusaders ousted Mars Hill from the NCAA Division II playoffs, en route to a quarterfinals appearance against Delta State. North Greenville enters Saturday’s contest looking to put together backto-back wins for the first time this season while the Lions are looking to bounce back from a 1-3 start to the season. The Crusaders are coming off of a 40-17 win over UNC Pembroke while Mars Hill was left picking up the pieces following a 62-38 loss to SAC rival Carson Newman. The Lion’s two other losses come at the hands of two FCS opponents in Chattanooga and Western Carolina with the lone win coming against Limestone College. Mars Hill comes into Saturday’s game averaging 456 yards of offense and 39.5 points. The Lions will test NGU’s defense as they boast a solid air attack throwing for more that 250-yards per game while also rushing for 195-yards. The Lions have had three different quarterbacks play in at-least three games this season, but the passing game runs through senior signal caller Matt Layman. Layman has thrown 70 percent of the passes for Mars Hill thus far, completing 61-percent of those throws. He has accounted for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. Layman has thrown two interceptions this season. Layman’s favorite receiver has been Keshaun Taylor. Taylor leads all receivers on the team by a wide margin and will definitely draw the attention of the NGU defensive backs. The sophomore has 34 receptions while amassing 473 and eight touchdowns. North Greenville’s front seven will also have its hands full containing the Mars Hill two-headed rushing attack. Shaikel Davis and Jamel Harbison have 136 carries between the two, racking up 643 combined yards and five touchdowns. Davis leads the team with 427 yards while Harbison has just 216 yards on the season but is the team leader with three rushing touchdowns. Middle linebacker Sam Houston who continues to be the cornerstone for the Crusaders leads NGU’s defense. Houston leads the Crusaders with 32 tackles 14 of which are solo and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Taylor Anderson is second on the squad with 30 on the season, but leads the defense with 19 solo. Anderson also plays a key role in the NGU pass defense, intercepting one pass while leading the team with three break-ups and four deflections. Martez Abrams leads the defensive front seven with 16 tackles while Darius Custard is the team’s sack leader with 1.5 on the year. North Greenville’s offensive attack has been mostly balanced so far this season, running the ball 151 times while attempting 107 passes. Yardage wise, the Crusaders average 159.5 yards on the ground and 205 through the air. Nelson Hughes continues to lead the North Greenville offense, accounting for 66 of the offense’s 69 completions this year. Hughes and receiver Robbie Brown continue to build on their relationship as the two have connected 24 times for 257-yards. Brown scored his first two touchdowns of the season last week in NGU’s lead over Pembroke. Mason Sanders also continues to get attention from Hughes, catching 12 passes for 183-yards and a unit leading three touchdowns. On the season, Hughes has 782-yards through the air and seven touchdowns. Ashton Heard has come on strong for NGU early this season, working his way to first on the NGU depth chart. The junior leads the Crusader tailback group with 390-yards on 64 carries with four touchdowns. Heard put together another solid performance last season in the win over the Braves with second 100yard rushing performance of the season. Trey Walker has been another solid option in the two spot, gaining 129-yards on the year on 21 attempts. The NGU offense has been the beneficiary of strong play up-front as the North Greenville offensive line continues to move bodies. Junior Dillon Alford has worked his way into the starting job at right tackle while senior Matthew Rochester locks down the left side of the line.
