The Last Meeting: The Crusader offense racked up 369 yards of total offense while North Greenville’s defense held the the Wolves under 300 as NGU locked up an NCCAA Victory Bowl bid with a 34-14 thumping of its in state rival Newberry. North Greenville dominated the action from the opening kickoff earning a 24 point lead before the two teams headed in for halftime. Justin Gravely capped the first-half scoring with a 42-yard field goal. Nelson Hughes led NGU with two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing while Trey Walker and Tyrecous Garret both found the endzone. North Greenville’s defense helped turn the tide in the first half with a fourth down stop on the two yard-line. The Crusaders held Newberry to just 164 yards of offense in the first half while picking off two passes. The Wolves finally found the endzone in the fourth quarter on a fumble return, but the damage had already been done. NGU added another touchdown in the third to put the nail in the coffin while North Greenville’s defense was even more dominant keeping the Newberry offense in check to the tune of just 113 yards. The win moved North Greenville to 6-5 overall while the Wolves fell to 5-6. NGU would go on to beat Shorter in the 2014 NCCAA Victory Bowl a week later in Rome Georgia.

Game Preview: NGU vs. NEWBERRY North Greenville heads into Saturday’s game coming off of one of the program’s biggest victories to date, a 35-13 win over the eighth ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. The Crusaders now focus their energy on in-state rival Newberry College, a team North Greenville followers are quite familiar with. The Wolves lead the series with North Greenville 10-3, but the Crusaders have won three of the last four including last year’s 20-point defeat in Ti¬gerville. NGU has the momentum in the series right now, but the Wolves have been the aggressor for much of the rivalry, winning five of seven meetings in Tigerville and five of the six in Newberry. NGU’s only win on the road came in 2011 when the Crusaders won a 46-17 win over the Wolves in dominating fashion. The Cru¬saders would also make their first trip to the NCAA playoffs that season. Saturday could be the tail of different offenses as the Wolves look to attack an NGU defense that has allowed over 300 yards rushing per game while North Greenville looks to exploit a Newberry Passing defense that has allowed for 287.5-yards through the air per game and five touchdowns. The NGU defense faced two of the best rushing offenses in the country in the first two games including Charleston Southern which rushed for 227.2 yards a game in the NCAA FCS as well as Lenoir-Rhyne which was one of Division II’s best offenses with 416.2 rushing yards per game last season. Nelson Hughes has done a good job spreading the wealth in the passing game thus far this season with six receivers catching at least three passes. Robbie Brown has been the go-to receiver once again this season catching 13 passes for 102 yards, but Hughes also has a favorite target in 6-6, 230 pound Mason Sanders who leads NGU revivers with 141 yards and nine receptions. Sanders has three touchdowns, two of which have been inside the red zone. The Crusaders came into the 2015 season with a three-headed monster at running back, but thus far, it has been senior Ashton Heard carrying the load. Heard entered the 2015 season as the fourth string running back, but has quickly cemented himself on the North Greenville two-deep. The Abbeville native had a career night against Lenoir-Rhyne last week rushing for 177 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns. Heard has made the most of his opportunity, with 197 yards so far this season. NGU also has a rushing threat at the quarterback position as Nelson Hughes is well known for the damage he can do with his legs, adding anoth¬er dimension to the already explosive North Greenville offense. The NGU defense rebounded nicely from a rough week one, holding one of the best offenses in the country under its 2014 total for both yards and points. The Crusaders were clutch last week in the team’s first win of the season, shutting down the LR offense on three fourth down conversions while forcing and recovering one fumble, keeping the game’s momentum in favor of NGU. One facet of the NGU defense that has yet to be tested this season is the North Greenville passing defense as opponents have attempted just 25 passes against the Crusader secondary. Oppos¬ing offenses have 111 passing yards and one touchdown against NGU. The Crusaders have six defenders with at least 10 tackles including Quan Weeks and Tony Godbolt who lead the Crusaders with 19 tackles each. Taylor Anders has 14 while Same Houston and Martez Abrams have 13 thus far.

North Greenville vs. Lenoir-Rhyne
S at u r d ay, S e p t e m b e r 1 2 , 2 0 1 5
Tigerville, S.C.—Ashton Heard had 177 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns while Nelson Hughes passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns in North Greenville’s 35-13 upset of eighth ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, Saturday night in Younts Stadium. The Crusaders came out swinging, taking the opening kickoff 72 yards for a score. Heard punched in his first of three touchdowns from nine yards out to give NGU a 6-0 lead. The Crusaders gambled with a two-point conversion as Nelson Hughes hit Robbie Brown from the one yard line to give NGU an 8-0 lead early in the game. Lenoir-Rhyne responded with a scoring drive of its own, taking the ensuing kickoff 72-yards as well. The Bears capped the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Kristaan Ivory. Ivory finished as LR’s leading rusher with 114 yards on 16 carries. The Bears would also capitalize on a two-point conversion attempt to even the tally at 8-8. Ivory’s touchdown with seven minutes left in the first quarter would be LR’s only touchdown of the game. The Bears scored on a field goal in the final seconds of the of the second quarter and a blocked PAT which they took back for two points in the fourth quarter to earn their 13 points, as the North Greenville defense shutdown one of Division II’s most prolific rushing offenses. Lenoir-Rhyne finished with 345 total yards as NGU limited the big play offense, holding them to 24 points under their 2014 scoring average. Tony Godbolt paced the North Greenville defense with 14 tackles while Quan Weeks finished with 12. Nigel Gay and Weeks both had 1.5 tackles for a loss. NGU took a 21-8 lead into intermission as Heard added a second rushing touchdown while Hughes hooked up with Mason Sanders from 45-yards out for his first touchdown of the day. The momentum of Saturday night swung back and forth but the stage never seemed too big for the upset minded Crusaders. NGU’s defense stood up on two fourth down stops while forcing two punts and recovering a fumble and NGU’s offense recovered from an early second half turnover to score twice more, handing the Bears their first regular season loss in 22 games, and first road loss in 16 tries. Ashton Heard put NGU up 28-13 midway through the fourth quarter with a three yard rushing touchdown while Sanders and Hughes hooked up for a second time. A fade to the left corner of the end-zone with 9:33 left extended the lead to 22. NGU’s “Black Swarm” defense then stopped the Bears on fourth down for the second time to put the final nail in the coffin. The win over the Bears is North Greenville’s first win over a top 10 team in program history and first win over Lenoir-Rhyne since 2011, a game that was also televised by WMYA My-40. The Crusaders earned a trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs the same year.
