The Disciples, a squad from Charlotte North Carolina are currently navigating its first season of collegiate football. The Disciples have however played a game against a former NGU opponent in Edward Waters, which beat the UGC 57-8 to open the season. The Crusaders are 5-0 against the Tigers with an average margin of victory hovering around the 25 mark. So far this season, the Disciples have lost their seven contests by an average of 42.25 points per game while North Greenville is winning by an average of 23.2 points per contest. NORTH GREENVILLE MID-SEASON RECAP
The North Greenville Football Team wrapped up the first half of its 2015 football season last Saturday with a 35-24 win over Tusculum College. The Crusaders are now 5-2 on the season, the best seven game record for NGU since the 2011 season. The Crusaders started the season with a 1-2 record, but knocked off Lenoir-Rhyne, then ranked eighth in the country for the team’s first win. NGU dropped the next week’s contest to Newberry College before kicking off a four game win-streak with a 40-17 win over UNC Pembroke. The win over the Indians sparked what is now a four game win-streak, claiming victories over Mars Hill, Ave Maria, and Tusculum. North Greenville will look to continue that streak this weekend against the University of God’s Chosen. North Greenville has dominated its last four games, winning by an average margin of just over 23-points. NGU’s offensive attack has changed slightly though, as the Crusaders have relied heavily on the rushing attack. North Greenville has run the ball 119 more times this season than it has thrown, a different look for the NGU spread offense that has been predominantly balanced, but favored the pass slightly the previous two seasons. NGU’s run game is spearheaded by the offensive line, which is dominating the point of attack. Led by senior Matthew Rochester, the Crusaders are averaging 226 yards per game. That’s an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Behind North Greenville’s offensive line is a guy who entered the season fourth on the depth chart, but quickly earned himself the starting role he had been seeking since stepping on campus three years ago. Ashton Heard, a junior from Abbeville, South Carolina, came to NGU in 2012 but found himself sidelined after tearing a ligament in his knee during a team scrimmage. The junior continued to struggle with injuries the previous two seasons but was deemed healthy enough to play this season and quickly took advantage of the opportunity. Heard rushed for a career high in North Greenville’s second game of the season, 117-yards on 31 carries to go along with three touchdowns. Heard never looked back, and is now the team’s number one running back. The talented youngster set a new school record and career high last week with 315-yardss as NGU cruised to a 35-24 win over Tusculum. North Greenville has three players with at least 200 yards on the ground this season, led by Heard who has 850 to go with six touchdowns. Simeon Byrd is next on the list with 343-yards on 51 carries while Trey Walker has 255-yards on 44 carries. NGU has rushed for 13 touchdowns on the season thus far, two of which come from quarterback Nelson Hughes. Heard is now 17th in the nation in rushing yards and 22nd in the country, averaging 117-yards per game. Nelson Hughes continues his solid senior season as the main signal caller for the Crusaders. Dorman High School product threw 150 passes this season without an interception before last Saturday’s game with 107 completions and 14 touchdowns. Hughes also finds himself in the NCAA rankings in both passing efficiency and Completion percentage. He has eclipsed the 1000-yard mark this season, throwing for 1365. Last week against Tusculum, Nelson Hughes threw his 66th touchdown pass for North Greenville, tying the school record for career touchdown passes. Hughes has had no problem finding bodies to throw to this season, as four receivers for the Crusaders have at least 150-yards and one touchdown. Mason Sanders leads the dangerous receiving corps with 24 catches for 346-yards and a team leading eight touchdowns. Hughes also continues to target Robbie Brown who has more receptions than any player on the team. Brown has 34 catches this season for 443-yards and four touchdowns. Tyrell Hillary has 13 receptions and two touchdowns while Ashton Heard has a touchdown and 12 receptions on the year with 220 yards out of the backfield. The Crusaders are averaging 208 passing yards per game. North Greenville’s offense has averaged 503 yards in its five wins and 515-yards per game in the last four games. Pair this with a 40.5 points per game average, and NGU’s offense is one of the best in the country, but the offense is also backed by one of North Greenville’s stellar defense. The “Black Swarm” continues to stifle opposing offensive attacks, holding them to 21.3 points per contest and 321 yards. Junior Sam Houston leads the charge with 57 tackles on the season while Taylor Anderson has 46 tackles and an interception. The NGU defense has gotten the job done on third down all year, holding the opposition to 39 percent. Offenses have done even worse on fourth down, as North Greenville has come up big on fourth-down conversions. Opposing teams are 7-20 on fourth down attempts, a 35 percent conversion rate. The same offenses are 13-19 inside the 20 against NGU’s defenders, 12 of which are touchdowns. One of NGU’s biggest assets on defense has been the turnover. The Crusaders are 28th in the country, recovering nine fumbles in seven games, eight of which were forced. The pass defense has also been a point of strength this season, from the front seven all the way to the defensive backs. The Crusaders have 14 sacks this year and 17 quarterback hurries, to go along with 22 break-ups and nine deflections by the backs and linebackers. Darius Custard leads the sack category for NGU with 2.5 on the season while Shaquan Burney has two. The interception category is led by Nigel Gay and KJ McDonald who have picked off two passes each this season. McDonald is also tied for the team lead in pass break-ups with four, the same amount as senior Taylor Anderson who also has an interception.

Tigerville, S.C—Ashton Heard’s school record 314-yards on the ground and two touchdowns helped lead the North Greenville Crusaders to a 35-24 homecoming win over Tusculum College, Saturday afternoon in Younts Stadium. Hughes tied the career record for touchdowns with his 66th career touchdown toss. The Crusaders sprinted out of the game in the first quarter as Heard took the first play from scrimmage 68-yards for a touchdown. NGU would hold a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point. Ben Kramm would tack on an NGU field goal later in the quarter to make the score 9-0 before the Pioneers finally found pay dirt. Cameron Thomas would put Tusculum on the board with a 54-yard interception return to cut NGU’s lead to two. The interception broke Hughes’ streak of 150 pass attempts without an interception while making the score 9-7. Ashton Heard would score again in North Greenville’s next drive as he punched in his second score of the half. The 49-yard scamper would be his sixth rushing touchdown of the season, extending the lead to 13-9. Heard finished the first half with 218-yards on the ground, 11 yards from tying the NCAA Division II first half rushing record. NGU’s passing game would get fired up in the second quarter when Nelson Hughes would find Mason Sanders in the north end zone for the first touchdown pass and catch of the game. A 54-yard rushing touchdown run from Isaac Robinson for Tusculum and two NGU field goals from Ben Kramm would make the score 28-14 at intermission. The Tusculum field goal was the first points of the second half and came with 12:05 left in the third quarter. North Greenville would score its only touchdown of the second half eight minutes later.
