The Crusaders battled to a 38-35 win, in a game which had over 1,100 yards of offense, 723 of which were through the air. Nelson Hughes finished with 358-yards passing and five total touchdowns to go alont with 113-yards on the ground. The Pioneers finished with 365 yards through the air and two touchdowns. Tusculum also scored twice on the ground as Fernando Smith ran for 145 yards on 24 carries. The Pioneers edged NGU in total offense 614-545, but NGU also gave TC three extra possessions, fumbling twice and throwing one interception. NGU carried a 35-14 lead into the final minutes of the third quarter but 21 unanswered points from the Pioneers would even the tally at 35-35 with 1:53 left in the game. GAME PREVIEW: NGU VS. TUSCULUM The North Greenville Football team returns after two weeks on the road to host Tusculum College. The Crusaders have earned three consecutive wins in which they won by an average of 27.6 points. The offense has averaged 503 yards in those wins while the defense has held opponents to an average of 272-yards of total offense and 32 points. NGU enters the Saturday showdown with the Pioneers with a 4-2 record compared to Tusculum’s 3-3 mark with a 2-2 record in the South Atlantic Conference. Offensively, NGU enters the game looking to put up big numbers as the Pioneers have allowed 393 yards a game this season, but the Crusaders might look to attack the Tusculum defense on the ground, rather than through the air as the Pioneers have given up nearly 300 yards a game on the ground. Opponents have put up big numbers against the Pioneers via the rushing attack including 274 yards per game and two touchdowns a game compared to just 118 passing yards per game. The NGU rushing game has been solid this season, running for 191 yards a contest 11 touchdowns. Ashton Heard has been the leader at the tailback spot with 535 yards on 94 carries and four touchdowns but Simeon Byrd has come on strong in the last two games. Byrd has led the Crusaders with 202 yards and three touchdowns. North Greenville’s offense has been more run heavy this season than seasons in the past, running 13 more times a game than passing. Nelson Hughes’ numbers are still impressive though, throwing for 204-yards per game and two touchdowns. He is completing 63.3 percent of his passes (Ranked 25th in Division II) with a 158.3 percent passing efficiency (Ranked 16th in Division II). Hughes has used his legs this season as well, rushing for 160 yards and two touchdowns, but have this week circled on his calendar. The then junior ran for a season high 113 yards last season against the Pioneers as he led all NGU rushers. Hughes also threw for a season high 358 yards and five touchdowns. Hughes will look for his usually targets on Saturday including Robbie Brown and Mason Sanders who lead NGU’s receivers who will face a solid defensive backfield that has nine interceptions and 18 break-ups this year, but the NGU offensive line will also have its hands full. The front five of the Crusaders will contend with a pass-rush that has 13 quarterback sacks on the season and 43 tackles for a loss. The sacks have totaled 66-yards in total loss while the backfield tackles have set back opposing offensives 122-yards. The Pioneer defense boasts three players with at-least five tackles for a loss while the sack column has four players with two quarterback takedowns. NGU’s defensive will also face a challenge this weekend against a solid Tusculum offensive intrusion. The Pioneers have run the ball 30 more times than they have put the ball in the air, but the passing game is where Tusculum earns its money. Of its 434-yards a game, 303 of them have come through the air. Luke Lancaster leads the charge with 1804 yards on the season on 137 attempts and 17 touchdowns. Lancaster has thrown six interceptions on the season however, and has completed just 55.5 percent of his passes. He is a bit of a rushing threat, running 19 times for 68 yards. NGU’s passing defense has allowed 137.3 yards per game, well under the Pioneer season average. Tusculum faced a similar challenge last week in Wingate, which also holds to opponents to 137 yards through the air. Lancaster and company threw for 268-yards against the #23 Bulldogs and three touchdowns. Lancaster was 22-34 with no interceptions. Tusculum will look to duplicate its performance from last season against the Crusaders, a game in which they threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns while also running for two, to go with 249 yards. North Greenville’s defense will be more of a challenge for the Pioneers this season than it was last season. The Crusaders have intercepted six passes led by Nigel Gay who has two. Gay also has two pass deflections. Taylor Anderson leads North Greenville with four of the defense’s 17 pass-breakups. Anderson is also the team’s second leading tackler, rounding up 40 total on the season including five tackles for a loss and half of a sack. The leader on the North Greenville defense is junior middle backer Sam Houston who has 49 stops on the season and two tackles for a loss. A key to North Greenville’s success on Saturday will be pressure on the quarterback generated by North Greenville’s front seven. Each of the seven players on NGU’s two-deep have at least one sack on the season including linebacker/ defensive end hybrid Darius Custard who has 2.5 sacks to lead the team and three hurries. Anthony Blair, Caleb Adkins, Martez Abrams, and Logan Terrell each have one sack on the season. Adkins has two tackles for a loss from the nose position while Blair has three quarterback hurries to his name.
