The Last Meeting: North Greenville and UNCP battled to a 27-10 final which fell in North Greenville’s favor. The Crusaders racked up 363 yards while the Braves finished with 364 yards during the last meeting between the two teams in 2010. Willy Korn threw for three touchdowns and 168-yards while Marcus Wilson and Idris Anderson led a ground attack with 98-yards and 89-yards respectively. Anderson finished the game with a team high one touchdown on the ground. The Braves took an early lead with a field goal. The Crusaders would break their scoreless first quarter with 1:53 left when Korn hooked up with Sean Wright for the first of three touch-downs between the pair to give NGU a 7-3 lead. North Greenville would tack on three more touchdowns as Sean Wright had receptions of 50-yards and three yards, finding pay dirt both times. NGU’s defense held the Braves’ offense scoreless after their first period field goal until the 28 second mark of the fourth quarter when a six play 57 yard drive was capped with a 28-yard touchdown pass. The Crusaders held the braves to just 104 yards on the ground while also holding on three fourth down conversion attempts. NGU’s defense also forced a season high five turnovers, forcing one fumble and four interceptions led by Nathan Batchelor who had a career high two in one game.

GAME PREVIEW: NGU vs. UNC-PEMBROKE For the second time this season, the North Greenville Football Team will face an undefeated team coming off of a loss the previous week. The next opponent, is a 3-0 University of North Carolina at Pembroke team comes off of a 16-6 win over Shaw University while the Crusaders look to bounce back from a 31-6 loss to in-state rival Newberry College. The last time the Crusaders hosted a game in Tigerville, they upset the eighth ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, following an opening week loss to Charleston Southern. The Crusaders have faced a gauntlet of teams committed to running the football in weeks 1-3, as Charleston Southern, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Newberry combined for 153 rushing attempts (51 Rushes Per Game Average) for 952 yards (317.3 Yard Per Game Average). The Braves will come to Tigerville touting a rush heavy offense, running the ball 67 more times (116 rushes to just 49 passes). The Braves are averaging 114.7 yards per game on the ground and 153.3 yards through the air with three touchdowns. NGU’s defense has allowed over 300-yards per game on the ground but have done a good job forcing turnovers, coming up with four fumbles on the season and one interception which came last week against Newberry. Quan Weeks and Tony Godbolt continue to pace the North Greenville defense with 23 tackles a piece on the season. Weeks leads the defense with four tackles for loss while Taylor Anderson has three. NGU’s defense hasn’t had as many opportunities to pass rush this season as teams have attempted just 22 times. NGU defenders have still managed to get to the quarterback three times this season, led by Weeks and Eddie Studyvnace who both have one. Offensively, North Greenville is looking for consistency. The Crusaders are averaging 315-yards per game, a number boosted largely by the Lenoir-Rhyne game in which NGU racked up 455-yards. In the team’s other two contests, the offense has just 492-yards combined, an average of just 246 a game. NGU will look to get back on track against a UNC-Pembroke defense that is allowing just 257-yards per game. The Braves have allowed an average of just 66 rushing yards per game but have been susceptible through the air, allowing 130-yards in the passing game. North Greenville’s offense will continue to rely on the usual suspects as Nelson Hughes prepares to start his 35th game in a North Greenville Uniform. Hughes is NGU’s leading passer this season throwing for 491 yards and three touchdowns while also accounting for one TD on the ground. Will Hunter has one attempt on the season in the back-up spot, coming in to relieve Hughes who suffered a cramp in NGU’s first game. Robbie Brown (18 receptions for 140-yards) and Mason Sanders (10 receptions for 146-yards and 3 touchdowns) have been favorite targets in the air attack while Ashton Heard continues his breakout season, leading the North Greenville rushing offense with 247-yards on 49 attempts and three touchdowns. Perhaps the biggest disparity in numbers between the Crusaders and Braves this week is the comparison of opponent’s records. NGU’s opponents are 6-3 on the season, with two losses coming against NCAA Division I opponents and one to North Greenville. Comparatively, the UNC-Pembroke opponents are 0-9 on the season thus far. The Crusaders will look to hand the Braves their first loss of 2015 on Saturday night in Younts Stadium in a whited out stadium! @Crusader_Sports

Newberry, S.C.—The North Greenville Football Team fell to 1-2 on the season Saturday after suffering a 31-6 loss to in-state rival Newberry College. The Crusaders had trouble moving the ball on offense amassing just 224-yards of total offense. The Crusaders rushed for 133 while putting up just 91 yards through the air. Trey Walker led the ground attack for NGU with 92-yards on 11 carries while Nelson Hughes ran for 34 yards and NGU’s only touchdown. The Wolves put up 384-yards of offense, 254 of which came on the ground. Taylor Anderson led the Crusaders with eight tackles while Sam Houston had six. Nigel Gay forced the only turnover for the Crusaders with a first half interception while Eddie Studyvance notched the Crusaders’ only quarterback sack. The two defenses held each other’s offense in check in the first quarter as neither team was able to crack the scoreless tie. The Wolves broke through in the second quarter to take a 7-0 with a three-yard rushing score by Kevin Miller. Newberry would tack on one more score in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead. NGU would look to cut the deficit in half but a penalty on the two yard-line would end the second quarter as the Wolves took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Newberry finished the first half with 10 first downs compared to just three for the Crusaders. The Wolves would pile on two more touchdowns and a field goal in the third and fourth quarters to extend the lead to 31-0 with just over seven minutes left to play in the game. Nelson Hughes would finally break NGU’s scoreless streak with on a two-yard rushing touchdown with 4:35 left in the game.
