The Last Meeting: The North Greenville offense outgained the Bulldogs by almost 200 yards while the Crusader defense held the Wingate Offense to just 205 total yards in a 24-14 win in Tigerville, South Carolina, last season. North Greenville took a 10-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs would score 14, unanswered points to take a 14-10 lead. Wingate used a 39 yard touchdown pass and a 9-play, 41 yard drive in the third period to take its first lead of the game. NGU’s offense went stale in the second and third quarters as the Crusaders failed to capitalize on eight drives. NGU turned the ball over three times in that span as Wingate also forced four punts. NGU’s special teams would take credit for North Greenville’s next score as a blocked punt was returned 15 yards for the first touchdown since the second quarter. Simeon Byrd would end NGU’s offensive drought in the fourth quarter with a 44 yard rushing touchdown to extend the NGU lead to 24-14. Byrd finished with two TD’s and 104 yards rushing while Nelson Hughes added 195 yards through the air. The Crusaders accumulated 384 yards of total offense while the defense totaled nine tackles for a loss including five sacks and three interceptions.

NORTH GREENVILLE VS. WINGATE [PREVIEW]
The
North Greenville football team enters a crucial two game stretch this week, starting with the Wingate Bulldogs. The Crusaders enter the weekend showdown with Wingate which has an identical 6-2 record, as both teams battle for one of seven Super Regional Two playoff spots. The Crusaders have won the last four meetings with the Bulldogs by an average of 17 points. NGU’s success has only been recent though as the Bulldogs won the first seven meetings and led the overall series 7-4.
NGU VS. WINGATE [DEFENSE] North Greenville’s defense has done a solid job of keeping opposing offenses in check this season. The Crusaders have held teams to 21.9 points per game while NGU’s offense chalks up 31 points a game. The defense, dubbed the “Black Swarm” is allowing 321 yards per contest, but has done its part to give the offense extra possesions, collecting nine interceptions on the season and nine fumbles. Led by junior Sam Houston, the Crusaders have done a good job on third and fourth down. Opponents have converted just 39 percent of their chances on third and an even worse on fourth, converting chances just 35 percent of the time. NGU has been susceptible to the run this season, surrendering 223 yards per game but have locked down the back end as teams struggle to find a successful passing attack. North Greenville’s defensive backs have held teams to 143 yards through the air this season, led by senior Taylor Anderson and KJ McDonald. Anderson and McDonald both have four pass break-up thus far, while McDonald has six deflections and is tied for the team lead with two interceptions. The front seven for the Crusaders have also helped in pass defense. Anthony Blair and Martez Abrams have both recorded sacks while stacking up 26 tackles on the season. Caleb Adkins also has a sack on the season from the nose guard position. Statistically, the Wingate defense is one of the better units Nelson Hughes and company will see all season. The Bulldogs are allowing just 283.6 yards per game, and just 13.6 points. They are more susceptible to running game, but not by much, allowing 159.9 yards on the ground, compared to 123 passing yards a game. The Bulldogs have 40 tackles for a loss this season including 12 sacks, and have picked off four passes. They have also recovered 13 fumbles. NGU VS. WINGATE [OFFENSE] NGU’s offensive success this season has been no surprise, but the avenue of success might raise some eyebrows. The Crusaders relied on a strong passing game to lead the charge in the past, but this season, a more than formidable rushing game has surfaced. The Crusaders have run the ball 119 more times than they have passed this season, a far cry from the 2013 and 2014 seasons in which NGU averaged 36.5 attempts a game through the air. North Greenville has attempted an average of 22 passes through eight games this season compared to 37 runs. North Greenville has averaged 213.2 yards a contest and 12 touchdowns. Ahston Heard has shouldered the weight of the ground attack, carrying the rock for 850 yards on 125 carries and six touchdowns. Since week two Simeon Byrd has added some bulk to the running game, delivering 343 yards on 51 attempts with three touchdowns while Nelson Hughes has scrambled for 173 yards from the quarterback position with two TDs.
@Crusader_Sports
While the rushing game has taken center stage, the passing game is still solid. Hughes has thrown for 1365 yards this season with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Robbie Brown has been Hughes’s favorite target, has 34 receptions to lead the receiving corps. Brown’s touchdown numbers are down from last year, as he has just four scores, but he leads the Crusaders with 433 yards in total. The touchdown leader for NGU would be sophomore Mason Sanders who has eight on the season. Offensive success begins up front, and North Greenville’s offensive line has been a solid unit thus far. The front five for NGU is ranked 22nd nationally, allowing just 35 tackles for a loss as the offense has run 483 plays. Opponents have recorded 14 sacks against the Crusaders and have recovered nine fumbles. Wingate’s offense has also been a rush heavy attack as the Bulldogs have run the ball 164 more times than they have put it in the air. The Bulldogs have rushed for 206 yards a game, with 13 touchdowns. The weapon of choice for Wingate is no secret. Running Back Lawrence Pittman has already reached the 1k mark as he has marched for 1,119 yards on 199 carries. He has found pay dirt nine times, and is the Bulldogs biggest playmaker. His longest run so far is 55 yards as he averages 135 yards a game. Kyle Johnson leads the passing attack for the Bulldogs as he has thrown for 1108 yards, completing 105 of 178 passes and 11 touchdowns. Like Hughes for NGU, Johnson has taken care of the ball as he has tossed just one interception. The redshirt junior Johnson has also done a good job spreading the ball around as the Bulldogs have four receivers with at least 100 yards on the year. Jordan Berry leads the receiving corps with 370 receiving yards and four touchdowns while Jody Fuller has 253 yards and two touchdowns on the season. Like North Greenville, the Bulldog offensive front has served as a catalyst for the offense. The front five for Wingate have allowed only nine sacks on the season and 48 tackles for a loss.
2015 COMMON OPPONENTS
North Greenville and Wingate have played two common opponents thus far in the 2015 season. The Crusaders are 2-0 against those opponents while Wingate sits at 1-1. NGU dis-patched Lenoir-Rhyne earlier in the season while claiming a win over Tusculum College two weeks ago. One of Wingate’s two losses on the season came from Tusculum who outlasted the Bulldogs three weeks ago. The Bulldogs responded with a win over Lenoir-Rhyne a week later. The Bulldogs are 6-2 on the season. Wingate has yet to play Mars Hill which was also beat by NGU as well as Newberry while North Greenville has Carson Newman on its remaining schedule.

2015 Last Time Out North Greenville vs. God’s Chosen
S at u r d ay, O c t o b e r 2 4 , 2 0 1 5 North Greenville moved its win streak to four straight games as the Crusaders dominated Our God’s Chosen by a final score of 69-0. For the second week in a row, the Crusaders started fast and were able to score in just 1:22 as Tyrell Hillary caught a touchdown pass from Nelson Hughes to make the score 7-0. The Crusaders forced a punt out of the Disciple offense and scored quickly once again. This time the touchdown came on the ground, as Trey Walker ran it in from the one yard line to cap off a six play, 67 yard drive. The Crusader defense forced the first of three turnovers on the day, intercepting the Disciple quarterback and returning it to the three-yard line. Tristen Jackson got the ball on the first play of the drive and punched it in for another touchdown, making the score 20-0 after a missed extra point. The Crusaders would get one more touchdown in the first quarter after another three-and-out by Our God’s Chosen, as Javon Smith caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Hughes to make the score 27-0. The second quarter saw much of the same from North Greenville, as they scored early and often. Shakeem Wharton capped off a six play, 54 yard drive with a one yard run just six seconds into the quarter to add to the Crusader lead. Not to be outdone, the defense recovered a fumble with 12:11 left in the quarter, but the offense couldn’t capitalize on the turnover. North Greenville wouldn’t score again until three minutes left in the half as Wharton got his second touchdown of the game on a 20-yard run. After carrying a 41-0 lead into halftime, the Crusaders began to work the younger players into the game, but the scoring continued. With 7:07 left in the third quarter, quarterback Mike Calabro got the scoring started in the second half, taking the ball into the end zone himself for a one-yard touchdown run. Another three-and-out for the defense gave Calabro the ball back, and with 3:21 left, Calabro completed a seven yard touchdown pass to Mason Sanders to make the score 55-0. With a shortened fourth quarter clock, the Crusaders would get two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the game. Stewart Hunt caught a 20-yard pass from Calabro and punched it in to add seven more points to the North Greenville total. Latif Hughes scored the final touchdown of the day, a 22-yard run, making the score 69-0.
