New member profile: Lygon Street Nursery

By Matt Ross

As Victoria’s peak industry body, we are committed to helping our member businesses grow. We caught up with one of our new members, Lygon Street Nursery, to understand more about their business, what makes them unique, and why they chose to become members of NGIV.

What makes Lygon Street Nursery unique?

We pride ourselves on our boundless service for all our customers’ needs. Lygon St Nursery is also the home of Lygon St Landscapes, offering a holistic landscape service for any space whether for the home, office, or landscape project.

Could you tell us a bit about the history of the nursery?

Since 2014 we have been passionately sharing our love for indoor plants, gardens and gardening. We started our humble little shop at 135 Lygon St and we’ve now grown into our new home at 245 Lygon St, formerly Lygon Hardware.

What is your stock range?

We stock essential gardening tools, fertilisers, potting mixes, and products for pest and diseases. We stock reputable products from Australian owned suppliers, including, Organic Crop Protectants, Grow Better, Harrys Garden Products, Seasol, Bokashi Composting Australia, Green Magazine and many others. We are also pleased to be able to stock Burgon and Ball tools and gifts, endorsed for quality by the Royal Horticultural Society. A selection of garden, landscape, indoor care books. We also stock a wide range a local ceramist pieces, including, Ella Reweti, Chris Erlandsen and Leath & Thread.

Who is a typical Lygon Street Nursery customer?

We endeavour to appeal to all demographics, offering a wide range of garden products and services to achieve this. Having said that we subsequently inherited a lot of the former hardware customers which has really helped us.

We try to use a number of methods. We’re very active on social media and find this to be a powerful tool. We also regularly update our websites, distribute a newsletter, and use local radio advertising.

Do you have any longer-term plans for the nursery?

We’re always making minor tweaks to the business as we go. We’ve been trading nearly 10 years and made the move to our bigger store three years ago, just before Covid hit.

Tell us a little bit about your core team and skills

Owner Michael Khalil comes from a Horticulture/Landscape background with 17 years in the trade. All five other staff members have studied horticulture and two have landscape design/architecture skills.

Why did you decide to choose to become a NGIV member?

I think it’s important for any industry to have a body that represents and offers the support to its members in good times and bad. Becoming a member ensures the NGIV can keep doing this and continues to drive the industry from strength to strength.

We’re delighted to have Lygon Street Nursery join the NGIV as a full member. As Victoria’s peak industry body, we are committed to helping our member businesses and the State’s horticulture industry to grow. Find out how you can become a member – ngiv.com.au
