All roads lead to Nhill LAST Sunday the Nhill Lions Club hosted their very popular car, truck and motorcycle display at Jaypex Park. The first Dream-Ride display was held in 2004 as part of the ‘Australia’s Biggest BBQ’ to raise money for the Variety Children’s Charity. It was held again in 2006 after some car enthusiasts commented on how much they had enjoyed the last display. Although the event was small, it was enjoyed by both enthusiasts and admirers alike. From then the Nhill Lions Club decided to hold this event annually.
This is the first year the ‘Dream-Ride’ has operated from Jaypex Park, and from the number of entries and enthusiasts attending on the day, this had been a positive move. The first car off the rank for a ‘Dream-Ride’ after the official part of the day was Matthew Meek’s 1995 Toyota Supra. Mr Ian Meek, President of the Nhill Lions Club said, “I am very happy with the crowd, especially those owners who bought their cars from outside the district for the display.” Enthusiasts travelled
from Bordertown, Horsham The special attraction this year was the first Linehaul Re-enactment which passed through Nhill on January 13 in 1955. IPEC began the first overnight, interstate parcel delivery service to Australia between Melbourne and Adelaide. The trip was made by two Peugeot utilities, one leaving Melbourne and the other from Adelaide. Meeting in Nhill, the drivers exchanged parcels and returned to their respective cities for delivery the next day. This year marks ten
years since IPEC became part of the Toll Group. Mr Rodney Johnston, General Manager of Toll Ipec Pty Ltd, spoke to the crowd about the process of restoring the Peugot utility after it had been
discovered at a depot in Villawood. The utility was built from the ground up at Wagga Wagga, and will continue its journey to Adelaide, ending where the company started with family day celebrations. Mr. Rodney Johnston with the original utility

Born in Nhill, Ken grew up on his father’s farm with his brother Norm. Both brothers worked on the farm but Ken, who continually suffered from Hay Fever, was forced to find another way to earn a living. It was from here Ken developed his love of trucks, when he worked for an Interstate Trucking company, travelling most of Australia. “Before roads were even roads,” Ken commented. “I’ve probably been around Australia about three times all up,” Ken said. Ken operated bulldozing equipment for approximately two years, before returning home in 1961 to drive school buses ‘off and on.’ In 1982 Ken and his father went into

partnership and he drove semi –trailer trucks in Adelaide until returning home once again. When Ken returned home he started coach driving. Ken’s father died in 1984 leaving Ken to operate Rintoule’s Bus and Travel Company. In 1998 Wimmera Roadways (five buses) was started until the coach section of the business was sold in 2003. Ken continued to operate his Bus and Travel business from the original premises in Nelson Street, operating the school bus run, travel and V/Line ticketing agency. In July 2007, the same company (McGinty family) bought the remaining eleven buses. The travel business is now up for sale. The business will permanently close on August 29, 2008. Ken will then start to enjoy his retirement after driving transport, including trucks, buses and coaches after 46 years.

Nhill SES getting there slowly Why not become a Councillor? MEMBERS of the Nhill SES are gradually working closer to be able to move into their new premises, the old site of the Nhill Fire Station in Victoria Street. Slowly but surely members are spending many man-hours volunteering with family and friends, building, painting, repairing, what ever needs to be done, to finish the rebuilding. The SES is a vital part of this community, and like many other volunteer groups, put many hours into providing services for the community they live in. The Nhill SES plays a very important part in rescue and emergency services, particularly along the Western Highway. This part of the highway is a renowned fatigue zone and the volunteer members are

Council elections are coming up fast. The final date for people to nominate to become a Councillor for the Shire of Hindmarsh is 28 October 2008. “On 29 November all Council positions are up for election.” Hindmarsh CEO John Hicks observed, “This is the ultimate way to volunteer to bring benefits to your community. Strictly, Councillors do get an allowance, but it is not sufficient to compensate them for their time and effort; it just makes their involvement tenable.” “Councillors represent their communities and make decisions that have far reaching effects on the way of life of those in their communities. It is a role that sees Councillors and staff working as a team to make decisions that maximise opportunities for residents.” he noted, “In Hindmarsh we have seen those decisions place the Council as the seventh most viable in the State, even though resources are tight and needs are high.” “Council is very keen for as many people as possible to express their interest and for competitive elections seeing the best possible people as Hindmarsh’s Councillors for the next four years. Any person who would like further information can contact me on 5391 1811 or make an appointment. A confidential discussion can be organised or you might simply like to find out more about the role of local government.” “The best thing you can do is to become involved.”

Delahunty urges Brumby to extend drought assistance The Nationals Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty has accused the Brumby Government of failing Victorian farming families after it refused to guarantee funding to extend crucial drought assistance programs yesterday. Following the Federal Government’s decision to extend exceptional circumstances funding across five regions of Victoria, The Nationals called on Agriculture Minister Joe Helper to reinstate funding for 13 drought assistance programs which had expired at the end of June. Mr Delahunty said the Minister refused to provide Victorian farming families with a guarantee that it would reinstate funding for the programs. “We are far from over the implications of the drought, and we still need support to get out of it,” he
said. “We’re still feeling the effects of the money drought which has enormous implications financially and socially. “Farmers desperately need practical assistance from the Victorian Government, yet when Brumby and his ministers are given a chance to provide farmers with some certainty about their business futures, they let them down.” Mr Delahunty said the uncertainty about the immediate future of the state’s drought assistance programs was creating angst in rural and regional communities. He said each of the 13 drought assistance programs which expired in June provided vital support to farmers in the Lowan electorate. “Among those measures are the rebate on fixed
water charges which supports rural water users receiving less than 40% of their normal entitlement, the $3000 on-farm productivity improvement grants, the drought employment program, the drought apprenticeship retention bonus, rural financial counselling program and the municipal rate subsidy. “I am calling on the Brumby Labor Government to extend funding for each of these important programs as a matter of urgency. “Farming families across country Victoria are suffering enough without the Brumby Labor Government adding to their woes. “It is time this government showed some leadership and compassion and provided farmers and their families with a guarantee of continued drought support.”

• Nhill Community News Australian National flag day September 3, 2008 The Australian National Flag is the unifying national symbol of our nation which recognises our shared history, culture and tradition. Our past and our future are woven into this flag. The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee, John Forrest, said Australian National Flag Day celebrates the first time the flag was flown on 3 September, 1901. On that day the then Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, announced the results of a competition to select a national flag for Australia. “Since the flag was first designed more than a century ago, it has flown around the world as an emblem of our nation and our people. It is the banner under which we celebrate in times of triumph and unite in times of sorrow. “As Australians we can take pride in our rich heritage, democratic traditions and respect for diversity. The Southern Cross reminds us of our unique position in the world as it can only be seen in the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere. The Commonwealth Star represents the federation of the six states and territories,” Mr Forrest said. Mr Forrest said he was encouraging all Australians to fly or display the Australian National Flag proudly in their homes, their schools and communities on National Flag Day.

Reflections of Agisting land: an option for small landholders the past
How a person plays the game shows something of his character - how he or she loses shows all of it. Unknown
New books at Nhill Library this week 1 Swimming With Crocodiles: An Australian Adventure by Will Chaffey. Quick flick: Trekking through a harsh and seductive landscape, the author’s expedition turned into a life-and-death struggle when the boat they expected to collect them at King Cascade never arrived. Stranded in the wildest of places and running out of supplies, Will was transformed in ways he could never have anticipated. 2 When Friendship Hurts: How to Deal with Friends Who Betray, Abandon or Wound You by Jan Yager. Quick flick: For everyone who has ever wondered about friends who hurt or reject them, this authoritative book provides invaluable insights and on-target advice on taking actions to understand and effectively deal with problematical friendships. 3 Five Drops Of Blood: Murder in the Cat Protection Society by Paul Wilson Quick flick: In March 1998, four directors of the Cat Protection Society of Queensland drove to their chairperson’s house to discuss crucial items on the agenda. They heard the strained barking of a security dog and the howls of sixteen hungry cats. A terrible smell hit them as they climbed out of their car - it led to the decomposing body of Dr Kathleen Marshall. This book details the subsequent trial and imprisonment of palmist and spiritualist Andrew Fitzherbert. His conviction, based solely on DNA evidence, was a first in Australia and only the third in the world. 4 Dark Summit: The True Story of Everest’s Most Controversial Season by Nick Heil. Quick flick: The worst season was ten years before, when a freak storm hit the mountain, inspiring John Krakauer’s classic Into Thin Air. But in 2006 the weather was perfect - the disaster was not a storm but the industry that climbing Everest has become, with too many inexperienced climbers taking insufficient precautions. 5 Fantasy Cross Stitch: 60 Spell-Binding Designs by Lesley Teare. Quick flick: Enter a world filled with intoxicating sorceresses, fairytale dragons, mythical unicorns and beautiful butterfly fairies, all intricately recreated in cross stitch. 6 Toddler Cafe: Fast Recipes and Fun Ways to Feed Even the Pickiest Eater by Jennifer Carden. Quick flick: Toddler Cafe presents over 50 imaginative recipes that are perfect for children aged 2 to 6 (though they are sure to appeal to older children and even adults). Including recipes focusing on veggies, pasta and rice, beans, proteins, sandwiches, and fruit (plus some tasty snacks!), the emphasis is on real ingredients and having a good time eating them. 7 The Grin Of The Dark by Ramsey Campbell. Quick flick: A former professor offers film critic Simon the chance of a lifetime—to write a book on one of the greatest longlost comedians of the silent-film era, Tubby Thackeray. Simon is determined to find out the truth behind the jolly fat man’s disappearance from film—and from the world. Tubby’s work carries the unmistakable stamp of the macabre. People literally laughed themselves to death during his performances. Soon, wherever Simon goes, laughter—and a clown’s wide, threatening grin—follow. 8 One Of Those Malibu Nights by Elizabeth Adler. Quick flick: It was just one of those Malibu nights, dark as a velvet shroud but when Private Investigator to the stars, Mac Reilly, hears the sound of a woman’s scream over the crashing waves, his low-key beach-bum lifestyle is changed forever. A beautiful, distraught woman wearing only a black lace negligee stands in the doorway of a fabulous beach house. In her hand, a gun, and it’s pointed directly at him. Mac escapes her bullet, but barely. Who is that woman? 9 Ralph’s Children by Hilary Norman. Quick flick: Some children play, from early years, with instincts far from pure. Some play their games with the souls of killers. And then they grow up...At Challow Hall Children’s Home, the group of four - abandoned, abused, neglected - had been drawn to each other early on, bonded by their shared experience. When they first start acting out parts from Lord of the Flies, it’s an innocent, childish game. But then one of their teachers joins in - a woman in a position of responsibility and trust - and the game gradually takes on a more sinister edge. 10 Blazing Saddles: The Cruel and Unusual History of the Tour De France by Matt Rendell. Quick flick: Few sporting contests have roused such blind passions and filthy suspicions as the Tour de France. From Lance Armstrong’s incredible comeback from cancer, to Tom Simpson’s death on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, the Tour has been the stage for some of sport’s most monumental triumphs and the scene of some of its darkest hours.

Agistment is the placement of livestock from one farm onto another for food, water, and shelter - in return for a fee. For small property owners it can be a useful way to expand livestock operations without the need for purchasing more land. Alternatively, if you don’t want to run your own livestock on your property, it may be a way to gain an income from your land by agisting it to another landholder for them to place their stock on your farm. However, there are some pitfalls in agisting property that landholders need to be aware of, especially those new to farming. An agreement needs to be reached between both parties to avoid potential problems such as high stocking rates degrading the soil, dealing with animal welfare issues and addressing differing expectations of who will look after the animals and land. To reduce the chance of future disputes, it is important that a negotiated agreement is developed between the land and livestock owners. The Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Services and Information for New Landholders (SINL) program, has recently designed a fact

sheet specifically on agistment to help both parties reach an agreement on agistment responsibilities. Sharyn Williams, Coordinator for the Services and Information for to New Landholders program in Bendigo said the simple template includes a checklist and table that can be used in reaching an agreement and it will help both parties avoid potential disputes. For example, the area of animal management includes discussion on: · who will manage the husbandry, supplementary feed and water for the livestock, loading and unloading of stock, · who will be responsible for removing dead stock · how a stockowner may be contacted if there is an emergency. Other areas covered include reaching agreement on payment arrangements, fencing management, weed control and maintaining sustainable ground cover with suitable stocking rates. A free copy of the New Landholder Agistment Form template can be downloaded from the DPI website on www.dpi.vic.gov/new-landholders under the ‘Fact Sheets’ section. Alternatively call Sharyn Williams Regional Coordinator for the Services and Information to New Landholders project in Bendigo on (03) 5430 4670 or 0408 335 027.
At this time of the year when feed is scare, small landholders may be considering agistment as a way to provide extra pasture for their livestock.

Supported accommodation crisis - community input needed The Nationals Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said new ideas from the community were desperately needed to deal with the crisis in supported accommodation for vulnerable Victorians in western Victoria. Earlier this year the Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition secured a review of supported accommodation for Victorians with a disability or mental illness by a Parliamentary committee. Last week the Family and Community Development Committee called for submissions. “This is a really important opportunity for local people to have their say,” Mr Delahunty said. “We know that right now the system is failing some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and with input from individuals, families, carers and groups we can fix the Labor Government’s broken system,” Mr Delahunty said. Official statistics show that 1,358 people in Victoria are on the waiting list for disability accommodation. Despite the demand, a recent report from the Auditor-General revealed that there have been no new supported accommodation beds for people with a disability for five years. This lack of beds has led to an increase in average waiting times of more than four years. “Victorians with a mental illness are also not getting access to the accommodation they need,” Mr Delahunty said. This has ramifications throughout the mental health system, with 46 per cent of hospital mental health beds blocked because of the shortage of discharge options. “The Brumby Government’s system of supported accommodation for the most vulnerable Victorians is in crisis,” said the Nationals MLA. “We have a responsibility to act now, with new ideas, to make sure that Victorians with a disability or mental illness get the care and support they both need and deserve.” “This has been an ongoing problem in western Victoria and this is an opportunity for those affected by the shortage of supported accommodation to have their say,” Mr Delahunty said.

DUE to the success of last year’s Netherby Art Exhibition, Netherby Primary School held another show last weekend. Although well advertised, the support for the exhibition was down, but those who attended had a great weekend. On Friday night ‘Key Change’ played fantastic music that allowed you to browse the artworks, tap your toes, and even be tempted to dance a little. While enjoying the music Mr Mal Drendel provided beautiful wines from Stevens Brook Estate, which complimented the great array of food. The community of Netherby has once again shown what community spirit is all about by assisting with catering, decorating the hall, erecting the art stands or working over the weekend. Without a local newsletter to express the thanks on a local level, Mrs Ingrid Clarkson would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who assisted in making the weekend the success it was. “The artists once again provided exquisite pieces of work. They are a very talented group of people, and I was proud to be able to display their work for the public to see. The response of the public and their surprise at the names on the list is always a treat,” Mrs Clarkson said.
Art admirers Veronica Flood (left) and Joy Gurry viewing a painting ‘Sunburst’ by Naomi Zanker. This painting received the Most Popular Painting vote over the weekend
“I would like to thank Lauren Beattie for being able to show her creative heads and picture.” “ As I walk through the halls of Nhill P-12 College and look at the work being displayed, I am in awe of the talent, and often wonder how far the students will take it,” Ingrid stated. “I guess, like Isla Dart, they may take it up in their senior years when they can appreciate time, and the joy you get from the completed
beautiful,” Ingrid said. The artists involved in the exhibition were Isla Dart, Lorna Drendel, Jenny Dufty, Gwenda Morris, Shirley Newton, Hilda Preston, Peter Ralph, Sandra Speakman, Naomi Zanker, Tania Mock, Taylor Drendel and Tarni Nottle. The emotions a visitor received from viewing a piece a work could only be surpassed by owning one.
Five art pieces were sold during the weekend and all viewers had the opportunity to vote for the painting they felt was their favourite. With nearly all paintings receiving at least one vote the winner of the Most Popular Painting was Sunburst by Naomi Zanker. Mrs Clarkson would like to thank everyone for making it a great weekend.

Over the next nine weeks, eight batons will pass through 102 Little Athletic Centres spread across Victoria. The event is a celebration for the 21,000 members of the Association and their Olympic aspirations, and their love of athletics. It will be an opportunity for young athletic champions to be part of event similar to the world wide torch relay that leads up to the opening of the Olympic Games. For the Victorian Little Athletics Association, the Little Athletes’ Baton Dream will finish at the 2008 Royal Melbourne Show just ten days prior to the start of the 2008/2009 season. At the Nhill Centre we ran a relay down the service road of Dimboola Road, where the athletes (that could make it at short notice) passed the baton on to another and continued to run with each other down to the Nhill (brick work) sign near the school crossing. They ran with pride holding the baton out in front, just like the Olympic torch. Nhill Little Athletics Centre was lucky to have their run with the Baton during the Olympics which added to the athlete’s enthusiasm. Wimmera juniors play in the big league
Auskick group all ready for the ‘Big’ game
Frazer Driscoll with some serious kicking with team mate Jacob Merrett
Last Saturday August 16, a bus of keen junior footballers left Nhill at 6:00 am to travel to Melbourne as part of the Auskick programme to play football at the Telstra Dome. There were juniors from all over the Wimmera anxious to enjoy a great day out, albeit a very long one. A few lucky parents travelled with the group to the game. This was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, who kindly paid for the bus transport for families from Nhill, Jeparit, Rainbow and Dimboola. Participants from Jeparit and Dimboola were picked up on the way to Melbourne. The trip in the beginning was fairly noisy, but eventually the excited children all managed to find some sleep on the way.
However, once arriving on the outskirts of Melbourne the noise level rose again to an audible level. The look on the faces of those arriving at the Telstra Dome made it clear that everyone was truly excited. After getting finally organised, the group made their way into the ground at about the fifteen minute mark of the first quarter. It was time to go and get ready for the big game! The young footballers entered the rooms of the Adelaide Crows to get changed, (as the players were to wear Adelaide (Crows) colours, much to the disgust of some of them) However the dismay soon changed when it was time to run out on to the ground in front of a crowd of approximately 30,000 people. The Auskick group would like to say ‘a big thanks’ to Bride and ‘St Vinnies,’ for giving the families the opportunity to travel to Melbourne for free. Mr Cameron Eagan said, “On behalf of all who travelled on the bus to Melbourne, we would like to say thank you to Joanne Thomas from the Hindmarsh Shire Council for asking Bride Schaefer for the funding.”
