CARRER BEGINNINGS

AGON Kwon Ji-yong began his career at age six as part of the group Little Roo’Ra. After releasing a Christmas album, the group’s contract was terminated by their record company, which came as a “shock” to G-Dragon. Although he vowed to his mother that he “wouldn’t [try to become a singer] again,” he was scouted by SM Entertainment on a ski trip with his family. He was a trainee under the record label YG Entertainment for five years (from 8–13 years old), specializing in dance before he left.

In third grade, a friend introduced Kwon to the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Inspired by their music, he developed an interest in rapping and began taking classes. Under People Crew’s tutelage, he participated in the release of the Korean hip-hop album Flex in 2001, becoming the youngest Korean rapper at 13 years old. Although he wrote his own lyrics, he admitted that his English was weak and the story behind the lyrics was just another typical “I’m young, but I’m the best” story. Additionally, he and future fellow Big Bang member Choi Seung-hyun were “neighborhood friend[s] from middle school” and would often dance and rap together before Kwon moved away.Catching the interest of Sean of the hip-hop duo Jinusean from YG Entertainment, he recommended Kwon to Sean’s record label’s CEO Yang Hyun Suk. After signing a contract with the record label, Kwon spent the first year cleaning the studio for the other artists in the record label and fetching water bottles during dance practice. Kwon chose the stage name G-Dragon (“Ji” is pronounced like “G”, and Yong is Korean for “dragon”). He featured on other artists’ albums and even released several singles with Dong under the name “GDYB.” After YG Entertainment scrapped the plan and opted for a boy band instead, Kwon contacted Choi, who auditioned in.G-Dragon, Dong (who chose the stage name Taeyang), and Choi (who chose the stage name T.O.P), were paired with three other members (Jang Hyun-seung, Daesung, and Seungri). The formation of the group was documented on television, but prior to their official debut, Jang was dropped. The now-quintet’s debut was a moderate success, with their first album selling over 100,000 copies and included G-Dragon’s first solo recording, a cover of the American alternative rock group Maroon 5’s single “This Love”

G-Dragon was featured on singer Lexy’s song “Super Fly” for her album Rush alongside Taeyang and T.O.P. He later collaborated with the Japanese boy band W-inds. for their single, “Rain Is Fallin’/Hybrid Dream”.His first solo album, Heartbreaker, was initially scheduled to be released in April that year, but was pushed back to August to coincide with his 21st (Korean years: 22nd) birthday.Featuring collaborations with several artists, including

Rida’s “Right Round” and Oasis’s “She’s Electric”, respectively. However, EMI, the record label that distributed “Right Round” said that they saw no similarities between these two songs.

On March 6, 2010

YG Entertainment announced that they personally contacted Flo Rida’s representatives requesting that he feature in G-Dragon’s live album, Shine a Light, to which Flo Rida accepted. In support of his album, G-Dragon staged

In November 2010, G-Dragon and T.O.P released their collaboration album GD & TOP. Preceding the release of the album, the duo held a worldwide premiere showcase for their album at Times Square in Yeongdeungpo of Seoul, which was also broadcast live on YouTube. To promote their album, the duo released three singles: “High High”, “Oh Yeah”, and “Knock Out” . All three singles preceded the release of the album and achieved c o m m e r c i a l success: “High High” scored number one on several music programs while “Oh Yeah” peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. The album was released on Christmas Eve, and debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart with pre-orders of 200,000 copies.

SOLO DEBUT AND COMERCIAL POPULARITY Teddy of 1TYM, Taeyang, Kush, CL of 2NE1, and Sandara Park of 2NE1, the album marked a change in G-Dragon’s appearance as he dyed his hair blonde to match its concept. Propelled by its lead-single of the same name, an electronic pop song that sold nearly five million downloads, the album surpassed 300,000 copies sold and went on to win Album of the Year from the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Shortly after Heartbreaker’s release, G-Dragon was accused of plagiarism by Sony Music when his tracks “Heartbreaker” and “Butterfly” were alleged to be similar to Flo

his first solo concert at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in December 2009. The name of the concert, Shine a Light, was derived from the lyrics to his song “A Boy”. The concert subsequently sparked controversy following complaints of obscenity[35] and suggestive content. The Korean Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs later asked the government prosecutors to investigate if G-Dragon or YG Entertainment violated laws on obscene performances in his concert. He was found innocent and was cleared of all charges on March 15, 2010.

In 2011

G-Dragon also formed a duo with Park Myung Soo for the Infinite Challenge Seohae Ahn Highway Song Festival 2011. They released their song “Having an Affair “ featuring Park Bom from 2NE1 on June 2, 2011. The song later became the second most downloaded song on the Gaon Music Chart for the year 2011.Promotional activities halted after G-Dragon tested positive for marijuana. Though a urine test back in August came back negative, a weak positive for marijuana was detected from testing the content of his hair in October. Since it was his first recorded offense with a minuscule amount of the drug, it resulted in an indictment and he was not charged

Given the stage name of T.O.P. by senior YG artist Seven,he became one of two rappers alongside G-Dragon (Kwon’s stage name) in Big Bang. The two were paired with four others: Taeyang, Daesung, Seungri and Hyunseung and a documentary leading up to their debut was aired to promote them.Hyunseung was later dropped by Yang, and Big Bang made its official debut with five members.Their first studio album, Big Bang Vol. 1 - Since 2007, received lukewarm receptions, and included T.O.P.’s first solo song “Big Boy”. The group achieved mainstream success with the release of the song “Lies” from the extended play Always (2007), which topped several charts upon its release. The singles, “Last Farewell” from Hot Issue (2008) and “Day by Day” from Stand Up (2008), became chart-toppers as well. T.O.P and Big Bang have been praised for their individuality and ability to fuse a pop sound with rap, R&B and dance elements.T.O.P possesses a bass vocal range.Columnist Jeff Benjamin of Billboard K-Town noted how he is known for his low-bass timbre rapping, while fellow journalist Tamar Herman, wrote that T.O.P’s rap is “an integral part to the group’s sound” and that he tends to favor an “confident, almost mocking, tone”.Adrienne Stanley of Kpop Starz also praised the rapper for his “speed and accuracy” when delivering bars. Both his solo releases – “Turn It Up” and “Doom Dada” – are hip hop influenced, with the latter drawing critical acclaim for its “lyrical rhythms [that] are both inviting and alienating” from Dazed magazine, that declared that T.O.P was leading the evolution of K-Pop.Additionally, Billboard noted how the song’s melody “is magnetizing with its whirring synths, tribal beats, and chanting, all of which pale in comparison to the rapper’s aggressive, multi-tonal delivery of his verses,” affirming that T.O.P “revealed his true artistry” with the song.

After contributing to singer Lexy’s album, Taeyang announced that he was going to release a solo album. Initially scheduled for a September release, the project was pushed back due to conflicting schedules with his group. Instead, Taeyang released the EP Hot in May 2008, backed by a production team that included 1TYM’s Teddy Park, Yang Hyun Suk, Kush, and his fellow member G-Dragon.[nb 1] Moving beyond the hip-hop genre of Big Bang, Taeyang incorporated mainly R&B songs into his album, stating that it was his “main focus”. He expressed disappointment with the album, however, admitting that he did not write any of the songs. He later stated that he would do so in the future to fully express and incorporate his thoughts and ideas into his music. The EP produced two singles: “Only Look at Me”, an R&B song written by Teddy and Kushand “Prayer” which featured Teddy. Promotional videos were shot for both. In support of his album, he also staged his first solo concert, the Hot Concert Series. Taeyang later received two awards from the 7th Korean Music Awards: Best

R&B/Soul Song for “Only Look at Me” and Best R&B/Soul Album for Hot. Throughout the majority of 2009, Taeyang contributed to his group’s activities. After promotional activities ended, he went back to the studio to record new solo materials. Two digital singles were released: “Where U At” and “Wedding Dress” with promotional videos. The latter single ranked number three on an online music poll for a Dutch radio station. Taeyang’s first full-length album Solar was released in July 2010 in two versions: a “Regular Edition” and a “Deluxe Edition” sold out on the first day of release. Two singles were released for promotions: “I Need a Girl” and “I’ll Be There”. In Solar, Taeyang contributed to its production; composing, cowriting four songs (“Solar”, “Where U At”, “Wedding Dress”, and “Take It Slow”) and writing lyrics for “Take It Slow”. Taeyang won the “Best Male Artist” award at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Both the regular and the deluxe versions peaked at the number one position on the Gaon Album Chart.’ Taeyang collaborated with G-Dragon in November 2014 to release the song “Good Boy” for YG Entertainment’s new hip hop project. The song received positive reviews, with Fuse naming it one of best songs of the year, and debuted at the

Following his appearance on the show, Seungri was scouted by YG Entertainment to audition for the new boy band, Big Bang, alongside five other members: T.O.P, Taeyang, G-Dragon, Daesung, and Hyun-seung. The formation of the group was documented on television. Despite the initial plan of debuting six members, Seungri and Hyun-seung risked elimination due to their lack of stage presence and were given one final opportunity to impress Yang Hyun-suk, founder of YG Entertainment. While Seungri was picked to stay, Hyung-seung (who went on to debut with the boy band Beast) was dropped before the official debut. Following the release of several single albums, Big Bang’s first album Big Bang Vol.1 - Since 2007 was a moderate success. Seungri also recorded his first solo song “The Next Day” for the album. The group’s breakthrough came with the release of their first extended play, Always (2007), which included the number one song “Lies” . The song went on to top major Korean music charts for a record-breaking seven consecutive weeks, and won the group the Song of the Year award at the 9th Mnet Korean Music Festival.

VELOPMENT, P Seungri became the first member of Big Bang to act in a musical with Sonagi in 2008. He also ventured into hosting, becoming a host for MBC’s music program Show! Music Core alongside Daesung. After filming wrapped up, Seungri went back into the studio with Big Bang to record for their second Korean studio album, Remember. The album was promoted with two singles: “Sunset Glow” and “Strong Baby,” a solo release by Seungri. In order to shed the “youngest member” image from Big Bang, he promoted the single with a more mature look complete with a stylized dance. He won his first triple crown for “Strong Baby” on SBS’s live music show Inkigayo. When promotional activities for Remember ended, Seungri returned to acting and starred in his first film Why Did You Come to My House?, playing the love interest of Kang Hye-jung. He then starred in his second musical Shouting, alongside bandmate Daesung, who was unable to perform at the last minute due to a car accident. The same year, he also starred in the film 19-Nineteen alongside fellow member T.O.P.
