West Rattlesnake Mountain

Short and easy hike. Follow yellow-blazed Old Bridle Path for .9 mi. to its end at a rocky outcrop with spectacular views. Trailhead access and parking off Rte. 113 Holderness–approx. 5 mi. from downtown Holderness. This winter hike is best w/ traction gear like microspikes or snowshoes. Cross-country skiing not recommended.

Whitten Woods

Short and easy trails. Recently-conserved 453-acre Whitten Woods property. Trailhead access and parking off Highland St. in Ashland. Trails offer views of the Squam watershed from two different peaks, each within about a mile of the parking area. This area is best for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Chamberlin Reynolds Memorial Forest

Short and easy trail network. 157-acre forest with a mile+ of waterfront. Several beaches, a swamp boardwalk and 4+ miles of hiking trails. Trailhead access & parking off College Rd. in Center Harbor, between Rte. 25B and Rte. 3. This area is best for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Belknap Woods

Short and easy trail network. A 90-acre forest in Center Harbor, donated to SLA in 1986. Trailhead access and parking is located at the mouth of Dog Cove and along Rte 25B. Keep your eyes open for birds and wildlife! This network of trails is best for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Center Harbor Woods

224 scenic acres, equidistant from Winnipesaukee and Squam Lakes, encompassing forests and wetlands. The network of trails are available for four-season use.

Sewall Woods Conservation Area—Wolfeboro

For many years cultivated by local farmers, this land is now conserved in perpetuity and provides scenic forest and wildlife habitat, year-round trails and recreational opportunities, and a quiet place for nature observation, all within a short walk of downtown Wolfeboro. Located on Sewall Road next to the Wolfeboro Inn. Bonnie Kittle on Unsplash

Trails of Red Hill Conservation Area Moultonborough & Sandwich

These trails are maintained by volunteers and are generally in good condition.

Red Hill (Fire Tower) Trail

Main trail to the summit fire tower. Trailhead on Red Hill Road. Great views of Winnipesaukee, Squam, the Ossipees, the Squam and Sandwich Ranges, more. Grade: moderate. Distance: 1.75 mi.

Cabin Trail

Trail branches off Red Hill Trail at the Horne cellar hole, about 0.5 mi. from the trailhead; instead of going left on the Red Hill Trail, go straight ahead; after 0.2 mi. at a junction with a snowmobile trail, go left; in another 0.5 mi., the trail reaches a nicely built, fairly well-preserved hunter’s cabin. Grade: moderate. Distance: 1.3 mi.

Eagle Cliff Trail

Trail provides a route to Red Hill fire tower via Eagle Cliff, providing views of Squam Lake and the Squam Range from Eagle Cliff along the way, and excellent views at summit. Grade: easy to moderate, except at the cliff, where it is steep. Distance: 2.6 mi.

Teedie Trail

This short trail from the Eagle Cliff Trail to Bean Rd./ Squam Lake Rd. can be used to avoid a potentially dangerous descent of the cliff in wet weather when coming down the Eagle Cliff Trail. It can also be used to make a loop with the westernmost part of the Eagle Cliff Trail and Bean Rd./Squam Lake Rd. Grade: easy. Distance: 0.6 mi.

Sheridan Woods Trail

Trail runs from trailhead on Sheridan Rd to high ground on southeastern Red Hill, with views of Sandwich Dome and Mt. Israel at the highest point. Grade: moderate, though most elevation is gained fairly early on. Distance: 2.5 mi.

Scenic Trail

This trail branches off the Sheridan Woods Trail about 0.5 mi above the trailhead and rejoins the trail in about 0.5 mi., providing an alternate route for part of the climb. Excellent views from two outlooks: across Garland Pond to the Ossipee Range, and to the Sandwich Range. Grade: moderate to steep. Distance: 0.5 mi. 41

The Lakes Region Tour

The route can be followed via Rte. 25 to the quaint lakeside village of Center Harbor and on to Moultonborough before choosing to either continue on Rte. 25 to explore the Ossipee Lake area or travel south on NH Rte. 109 to experience the charm of the less developed eastern side of Lake Winnipesaukee to Wolfeboro, known as the “Oldest Summer Resort in America.” The Branch River Valley Trail journeys through the small rural towns of Wakefield and Milton, and on to the Maine border. Take a walking or bike tour through the town of Wakefield or learn more about the agricultural heritage of New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Farm Museum.

Weirs Beach, with its amusement parks, arcades, and shopping, is one of the most popular family resort areas in the state. This area of the Lakes Region Tour is always bustling with activity. A few miles to the north, you’ll view scenic gateways to Meredith‘s traditional New England village with a panorama of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains to the north.

ROBERT KOZLOW

Length: 97 miles n Towns: Alton, Ashland, Center Harbor, Gilford, Holderness, Laconia, Meredith, Moultonborough, New Hampton, Ossipee, Sandwich, Tamworth, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro n Highlights: Circumnavigate Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake, and stop for a mountain hike, a walk through the region’s friendly downtown areas, or a visit to a historical museum. Or cruise the Big Lake on the M/S Mount Washington. n Website: lakesregion.org The Lakes Region Scenic Byway circles Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest and most popular lake in New Hampshire. Beginning in Alton, the route follows NH Rte. 11 north through Alton Bay up through Gilford. This western side of the lake features exceptional views of both the lake and the Ossipee Range, and offers numerous recreational opportunities. Hike to the summit of Mt. Major for wonderful views of the Lake and surrounding mountain ranges, or stop at Ellacoya State Park for a picnic or a swim.

The Lakes Loop Length: 134 miles (approximately) From the town docks in Meredith on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, turn east on NH Rte. 25 to Center Harbor and Moultonborough, where you’ll head south on NH Rte. 109, a windy route that offers frequent glimpses of the Big Lake as it takes you through Wolfeboro (the “Oldest Summer Resort in America”). Outside Wolfeboro, Rte. 109 turns east, passing Wentworth State Park, to Sanbornville where you join Rte. 153.

You can see a lot on a Lakes Region Tour—just take a look!

Planning a party? Need a caterer? Check out this guide to help you plan for a successful event! 1. Who’s coming, and what’s the occasion? Have an idea of your expected guest count. You may not know exactly how many guests, but a small range is helpful: 25-30 or 80-100. Also, share with your caterer the occasion and group dynamic—mostly adults? or will there be lots of children? Does your group have small appetites, or are they hearty eaters? If you don’t know, your caterer can help! 2. When? Select a date and time for your event. Vendors often have different pricing based on peak or off-peak demand; if you’re considering an event during a popular time like a graduation weekend, the earlier you plan, the better! 3. Where? Where will your event be held? Travel time— and corresponding people power and labor costs—can impact your caterer’s pricing. Also, does your venue offer commercial kitchen equipment, or will your caterer be cooking at their facility and transporting food? 4. Communicate your vision. You may not know precisely what time you want to eat, but chances are you know how you want your event to feel. Is this a formal affair, a business event to impress clients, or a laid-back celebration?

70

5. What are your service needs? Are you looking to avoid cooking for 50 of your closest family and friends, but don’t mind the clean-up? Do you want staff to assist with service and clean-up? 6. Do you have a food preference? In addition to reviewing supplied menu info, let your caterer know if you expect any guests with food allergies or dietary restrictions so you can be proactive about menu selections. 7. Drinks anyone? Consider whether you’ll need beverages provided by your caterer. If you’re interested in alcohol service, check with your caterer to make sure you are in compliance with NH Liquor laws, and find out what permits may be required in your city or town. 8. Let’s talk money! Catering events are often centered around celebrations, but that doesn’t mean you’ve accounted for them in your monthly budget. Before calling, consider your budget goals, and don’t be shy about sharing them with your caterer. Often, a caterer can help guide you toward the menu and service choices that align best with your financial goals. Thanks for the above to Megan Fournier, Director of Catering & Events, T-BONES Meats, Sweets & Catering. WeCaterGreater.com

Laconia Area Trails

THE WOW TRAIL
Paved, 10 ft. wide multi-use pathway parallels the existing RR corridor in the city of Laconia. The 2.5 mile trail travels from Elm Street in Lakeport to the Belmont town line and connects to the new 1.7 mile Winnisquam Scenic Trail which leads to the Agway store on Rte. 3 near the Mosquito Bridge.

n

Northern Rail Trail

58-mile multi-use trail running from Lebanon to Boscawen using the right-ofway of the Boston and Maine Railroad’s former Northern Line. Numerous activity options; best used March to November. Dogs (on leash) can use the trail, which follows the route of the B & M Railroad along the Mascoma River. Family friendly. Trail end points: Spencer Street in Lebanon and River Road near the Hannah Dustin Park & Ride in Boscawen.

Plymouth Area Trails n

FOX PARK
The singletrack trails are designed with intermediate riders in mind, and feature a mix of flow and technical riding. You will encounter roots, rocks and steep terrain on these trails. For walkers, the doubletrack trails are most suitable. Parking: There is a large parking lot on Prince Haven Drive, off Langdon Street. GYROSCOPE TRAILS
Pemigewasset Riverside Park, on the Holderness side of the river, has long been known to mountain bikers as the Gyroscope Trails, or Gyro. The trail network is unique in New Hampshire for its absence of rocks, making it a true beginner network. Winding, twisted singletrack; a great place to develop turning skills. LRTA

n

PUMP TRACK
The Pump Track is a great place for beginners to develop their skills. A starting ramp and a figure-eight track of rollers and berms winds through the old concrete supports (which also serve as a public graffiti canvas).

ensuring plenty of fun throughout the seasons. One-sixteenth of New Hampshire is covered by water, much of it in the Lakes Region, so there’s plenty of opportunity for on-water fun in every season. The region’s largest lakes include Lake Winnipesaukee, with over 200 miles of shoreline and 274 habitable islands, Squam Lake, where On Golden Pond was filmed, Lake Winnisquam, Newfound Lake and Ossipee Lake. The smallest is Duncan Lake (114 acres), once a favorite fishing spot of Grover Cleveland (the 22nd and 24th President of the United States), who was a summer resident. LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE is located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire at the foothills of the White Mountains; it is the largest lake in the state at 72 square miles. This pristine lake is approximately two and a half miles wide and seven miles in length, and is fed by 8 springs; it has 22 miles of shoreline. Newfound Lake is proud to say that it is Milfoil FREE! SQUAM LAKE, the film site for On Golden Pond, is known as one of the most peaceful and pristine lakes in the country, and offers visitors plenty of opportunity to enjoy its natural beauty. Big and Little Squam lakes are naturally spring-fed and are connected by a channel in Holderness. Big Squam is six miles long, four miles wide and 98 feet deep.
