About the Cover
NH Made is over 750 members strong, with businesses of many types and sizes. Its members pour their passions into everything they make and the experiences they create for residents and visitors alike. Selecting members to feature on the Guide’s cover was a challenging task. We hope the photo on the cover shows you the incredible diversity that makes New Hampshire a wonderful community. We have craftspeople who create beautiful baskets and candy makers who delight us with fantastical treats. You can find one-of-a-kind gifts from a local jewelry designer or farm-to-table restaurants where you can linger with friends and family all night long. On our cover, we barely scratch the surface of what NH Made is all about. However, we hope it entices you to turn the pages and discover the incredible people and places waiting for you in every region of New Hampshire.
Cover Photographer – Charley Freiberg The cover photo was shot by one of our members, Charley Freiberg of Elkins. Charley is a commercial photographer who’s photographed everything from yachts to salad dressings. He was discovered while working as an editor for BYTE magazine. Charley says he likes working for small businesses and finds great products and services through his work, noting he has a house filled with art and utensils from New Hampshire artists and stores. Charley has conducted photography workshops to teach entrepreneurs how to promote their products, and has photographed many of our members’ work over his 20-year history with NH Made.
Cover Photo Location – O.R. Gooch & Son The cover photo was shot in the NH Made offices, located in a model log home in Epping, built by NH Made member, Ben Gooch of O.R. Gooch & Son. This third-generation company was started by Ben’s grandfather, O.R. Gooch, a local farmer and business owner, in 1953. O.R. Gooch & Son specializes in all areas of log home building: design, restoration, renovation and additions. The business is known for hiring local talent, and contributes to the community through Make-A-Wish® New Hampshire.
Thanks to our NH Made members for the richness they bring to New Hampshire communities. Learn more about our NH Made members by visiting nhmade.com.

Promoting ‘Buying Local’ for 20 Years
New Hampshire prides itself on creativity and independence. So, it’s no wonder that there’s much to enjoy in the Granite State for visitors and residents alike. If you buy local, you’ll be experiencing the best-of-the-best while at the same time helping to build New Hampshire communities.
You should feel good about your “buy local” commitment. Did you know that each dollar spent at an independent, locally owned business returns three times more money to the community than one spent at a nationally owned business? Supporting local businesses keeps our communities unique and distinctive, and creates more local jobs. You’re also more likely to get better service, since local businesses hire people with a better understanding of the products they sell, and they take more time to get to know their guests. NH Made was formed to highlight the benefit that buying local brings to New Hampshire’s people and its communities. Established in 1997 as New Hampshire Stories, with the theme, “We have a story to tell,” our nonprofit organization is starting its third decade of strengthening New Hampshire’s economy by increasing the awareness of and demand for New Hampshire-made products and services. In this publication, you’ll have a chance to “meet” many of our members as they tell their stories – the passion they have for their work and the ways in which they contribute to causes that matter to them.
NH MADE AT A GLANCE

Jacob Mason – Barn Store of New England LLC Salisbury, NH
Once the Mason family decided to create the Barn Store of New England, Jacob Mason says the process was simple: they built the building in 2002 and opened the store in the spring of 2003. Jacob loves rural New Hampshire living and the lifestyle that it provides for him and his customers. He says he enjoys the interaction with farmers in the community, and loves the fact that folks in rural New Hampshire know where their food comes from and how it’s made. Yankee Farmer’s Market, Warner
Dartmouth Lake Sunapee Each of 34 towns in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region serves up more than a few surprises. Bordered on the west by the Connecticut River, this outdoor enthusiast’s haven offers endless variety: mountains, lakes, and wooded lanes; pastoral villages and cultural centers; dining, shopping, and high adventure. This is authentic New Hampshire at its best.
Although his is the only store in town, Jacob doesn’t rest on his laurels. He offers a variety of services, hunting and fishing licenses, hunting supplies, a small diner, rugged clothing, and supplies for home repair. Barn Store of New England often provides the first summer job for younger members of the community, and the business supports town programs through outright donations or discounts. Jacob says that being a member of NH Made gives him a sense of belonging to the future of New Hampshire, and he likes being able to proudly display the NH Made logo. His family takes pride in the state heritage of farming and its rural environment. And he loves helping other families realize their dreams of creating a small farm or garden.
Darryl Parker – Schoodacs Coffee House Warner, NH
Darryl Parker and his wife made the trek from Charlotte, NC, to visit family in Warner for nearly 15 years before they decided to make the trip permanent. After they purchased a building on Main Street, they decided the town could benefit from a coffee shop, so they opened Schoodacs Coffee House in 2015. Darryl says the people in the region are some of the hardest working and kindest you’d ever have the pleasure to meet. And the community was accepting of the newcomers, with Darryl quickly becoming involved in town government and with local nonprofits such as the Concord Lake Sunapee Rail Trail Association.

Schoodacs has a mission of building community one cup of coffee at a time, and they fulfill that mission by providing a good product, good service, and a great place to gather whether indoors in the dining room or outside on the large porch or front lawn located right in the village square. Through NH Made, Darryl says he’s discovered several vendors for his retail store, and has made inroads in product development for their cold brew and iced tea bottled drinks with help from the leadership at NH Made. But above it all, Darryl says that he found immediate support from a statewide organization that understands its role in making member businesses a success.
Jacob and Darryl love the rural nature of the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region and the welcoming nature of its residents. They suggest you visit soon! Visit our website for a complete member list.

David Fuller – Fuller’s Sugarhouse
Great North Woods
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
The Great North Woods is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise. Here, spotting moose can be a daily event, and trout wait in crystal clear waters. 1,000 miles of snowmobile trails become summer paths for ATVs. Around the corner from a pretty, rural village, you might find a waterfall, a covered bridge, or an eagle soaring above. NH Made members in the Great North Woods find it a great place to live and work.
Lancaster, NH
David Fuller first learned to make maple syrup from his grandfather, and loved it so much that he decided to make it his life’s work. In 1972, he and his wife, Patti, established Fuller’s Sugarhouse and Country Store in downtown Lancaster. Today, the sugarhouse is truly a family affair, involving his son, James, his brothers, Ed and Russell, and his official taste testers, grandsons, Isaac and Trevor. While visitors come to the Great North Woods to “get away from it all,” David loves the fact that he doesn’t need to go anywhere to enjoy the peace and beauty of the woods. And he’s proud of the fact that his business has created jobs and other economic opportunities for people in the region – and that the sugarhouse is a strong supporter of local nonprofits, too. David says NH Made has provided him with a community of like-minded people and small business owners to share experiences with. Those members may produce different products or provide different services, but they all go through similar struggles and successes. He’s been a part of the organization since the beginning, and is grateful that the group helps him bring his maple products to people around the state.
Bette Guerin – Fiddleheads A Great North Woods Shoppe Colebrook, NH
Bette Guerin worked in the financial field for years but yearned to do something that would let her express her more artistic side. Always a fan of shopping in artisan made shops and trying different crafts and art mediums, she decided about 10 years ago to switch gears. Fiddleheads A Great North Woods Shoppe was born. Having her business in the Great North Woods allows Bette to enjoy the woodlands and the great outdoors. She appreciates the fact that she lives in a small town where most people know each other and support one another. But they’re welcoming to visitors, too. She’s extended her business connection to the arts to volunteer work with the Great North Woods Committee for the Arts that’s brought more than 300 musical performances to the region and to the Connecticut River Artisan Group which helps artists increase confidence in their work through exhibits, shows and workshops. Bette’s NH Made connection helps her source locally made products for her store and provide a showcase for member talent. It turns out her membership fits nicely with the long-term vision for her Great North Woods business.
Why don’t you get away from it all in the Great North Woods? David and Bette highly recommend it!

Susann Foster Brown – Susann Foster Brown Studio
Lake Wentworth, Wolfeboro
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
Milton, NH
Lakes With more than 250 bodies of water – including Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest – the Lakes Region has long attracted travelers with its bustling lakeside towns, rolling mountains, and picture-perfect villages. Whether it’s hunting for antiques, cruising the waters, or falling asleep in a cozy inn to the sound of loons, the Lakes Region promises endless fun, relaxation, and days you’ll want to go on forever.
Susann Foster Brown, a long-time artisan, loves living in the Lakes Region where, she says, those who choose a slower pace will find gorgeous landscapes, antique homesteads, small museums, small villages, extensive walking trails, and beautiful lakes and ponds. Brown says she’s close enough to services when she needs them but far enough away to enjoy a rural life and the night sky. Susann, who has loved creating ever since she could hold a crayon and make a mark, says that she rarely has to travel far to find inspiration for her etchings, and friends nearby provide the wool so she can hand-spin unique yarns. These items, and more, are offered at the Susann Foster Brown Studio. The small-town life also encourages volunteer activities. Susann has enjoyed advancing historic preservation efforts, and she demonstrates her crafts at local museums, 4-H and scout clubs in the hope that the next generations will share the love of handcraft and carry it on. Of NH Made, she says being connected with the group and using its logo lets people know her works are created here in New Hampshire. And she’s proud of that!
Holly Kerouac & Craig Hall – Newfound Grocery LLC Bridgewater, NH
For years, Holly Kerouac and Craig Hall nurtured the dream of owning and operating a country store. After years of working in other occupations and when a friend encouraged them to fulfill their dream, they began looking for the perfect location. After searching more than 100 stores, they settled on Bridgewater, and Newfound Grocery – selling gifts, local goods, food and more – was born. What made them choose their location? Naturally, the beautiful lakes region, says Holly, but also the small-town charm, and the chance to enjoy local people and to give back to the community. Newfound Grocery is proud to continue the annual “Turkey Trot” event that raises money for local families that need some help around the holidays. Each year Newfound Grocery helps to raise thousands to fund this and other charitable activities.
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
By becoming a NH Made member, Newfound Grocery has been able to seek out vendors of locally made goods, and now offers more than 50 products made in New Hampshire to their customers.
Susann, Holly, and Craig have fallen in love with the Lakes Region, and hope visitors will share their delight!

Kevin Miller – KRM Chocolates, LLC
Courtesy: Katie Putnam
Salem, NH
Downtown Concord
Merrimack Valley The Merrimack Valley offers visitors and residents a wide range of experiences, from rural Canterbury that’s home to a peaceful Shaker Village, to the state’s largest city of Manchester with its entertainment arenas and top-notch dining, to New Hampshire’s gold-domed capitol city of Concord. NH Made members report that it’s a vibrant region in which to live, play and work.
Kevin Miller of KRM Chocolates, LLC, started making chocolates as a hobby for people he worked with in his financial services and academic careers. When a stroke forced him to give up that work and his long commute, a physical therapist suggested that he resume chocolate making to enhance his recovery. The effort clicked, and he’s spent the four years since building his business. Kevin says he loves the Merrimack Valley because of its natural beauty, and because its people are willing to take a chance on something different – such as a new flavor of chocolate. He joined NH Made shortly after starting KRM Chocolates to build a network with other small business owners. He loves being able to share “war stories” and tips about upcoming events. And while he has taken much from his contacts in the organization, he has continued to give back, providing product donations to organizations such as the New Hampshire Public Television’s annual auction and other nonprofit fundraisers.
Jill Robbins – Homefree, LLC Windham, NH
Jill Robbins of Homefree, LLC, loves the Merrimack Valley because it gives her family easy access to lakes, mountains and several small cities. And it’s helpful for her business to be right off the highway and just 30 miles from Boston for easy shipping and receiving. She started her business as a way of providing snacks that her son with food allergies could enjoy. As a mom and clinical psychologist, she knew that sharing food in social situations was important and that it would be great if there were healthy and tasty snacks that everyone could eat together. So Homefree cookies were born. People can now easily purchase snacks that can be enjoyed by everyone, and Homefree makes direct donations of cookies to the local community and to the wider allergy community, including food pantries, community events, fundraising events and appreciation holiday gifts to fire, police, and emergency room staff. Jill reports that she’s delighted when she hears that another business has discovered her products on the NH Made web site.
Kevin and Jill and their businesses have settled into the fabric of the Merrimack Valley. We hope you can experience the excitement, too!

Rob Kasper – Walpole Creamery
Summit of Mount Monadnock
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
Walpole, NH
What do a farmer and two retirees – a business executive and a chocolatier – have in common? Ice cream, of course. The trio joined forces in 2006 to form Walpole Creamery. Their slogan – From Cow to Cone – demonstrates the group’s commitment to local production. Walpole Creamery’s awardwinning ice cream base is produced using hormone and antibiotic-free milk from a local farm, and they add other high-quality, all-natural ingredients, locally sourced when possible. And since the Monadnock Region is known for its numerous small dairy and produce farms, it’s the perfect spot for their ice cream business. In addition to its employees serving as volunteers for various local nonprofits, Walpole Creamery donates ice cream to numerous events in the Monadnock Region centered around education, youth sports, and other community activities.
Monadnock
Rob, a practicing attorney, recognizes the importance of NH Made in helping small, local producers establish a NH brand.
Today, in all seasons, the beauty of the Monadnock Region inspires artists and writers, just as it did in the days when Emerson and Thoreau were frequent visitors. You can enjoy its scenic byways, serene lakes, and woodsy walks, as well as historic theatres, and a wealth of dining and shopping locales.
Stephen & Cheryl Barlow – Shaker Style Harrisville, NH
Stephen Barlow’s love of woodworking began as a boy when he learned to appreciate the beauty of natural wood by spending time in his grandfather’s workshop. Stephen cites the amazement he feels about working all day at something he loves, knowing that the pieces offered in his Shaker Style shop will bring joy to people’s lives for generations to come. Stephen loves that small, local store owners thrive in the Monadnock Region, and that the slow pace, beauty and peacefulness fuels not only his creativity but that of others in the area.
Courtesy: Laura Mahoney / L&S Photography
His membership in NH Made has allowed him to learn of other local producers whose work he can feature in his furniture showroom. And having a statewide group like NH Made to promote his business via its web site and through product guides and other promotional opportunities gives his small business big visibility. Animal lovers Stephen and Cheryl donate to local nonprofit fundraisers for the Monadnock Humane Society and Touchstone Farm in Temple, among others. And they invest their time with environmental nonprofits focused on preserving the quality of the Monadnock Region that they love.
Won’t you let the Monadnock Region fuel your creativity like it does for Rob, Stephen and Cheryl?

Elizabeth Powell – Rocky Corner Soapworks
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
Epping, NH
Hampton Beach
What began as a home school science project for Elizabeth Powell and her two sisters blossomed into a family business – focused on providing all-natural products at a reasonable cost. For 12 years, Rocky Corner Soapworks has done just that. Taking over the reins from her mother just three years ago, Elizabeth and her husband, Daniel, have continued to build the business while keeping the values and standards that the company was founded on so many years ago. Elizabeth and Daniel love being in the Seacoast region since the many locally owned shops and businesses give them a ready outlet for their products. And while they’ve drawn business strength from the region, they’ve given back, too, selling special soaps to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and to support breast cancer research. Elizabeth says that as a small business she understands the importance of local support.
Seacoast It’s amazing how much sea, sun, and fun you can pack into an 18-mile stretch of coastline! The fact that it’s the shortest coast in the East doesn’t mean that it’s short on adventure and New Hampshire hospitality. Enjoy Portsmouth’s vibrant downtown life, hit the beach, or head a bit inland to enjoy more Seacoast charm. With wonderful restaurants throughout the region, don’t forget to bring your appetite!
Elizabeth and Daniel find that NH Made has connected them with other business owners who provide not only business advice but the encouragement that’s so important!
Lynn Graham – Little River Designs Nottingham, NH
Lynn Graham’s passion for creating jewelry for herself has grown into a livelihood – Little River Designs. Lynn first started giving her pieces away as gifts. Then, people asked her to create special pieces to match their clothing. Developing her web site in 2011 opened even more doors! Lynn says that living and working in the Granite State means she never runs out of material or natural wonders for inspiration. What’s not to like about the Seacoast? In one hour she can be looking down on the state from the top of a mountain or walking peacefully on a winter’s beach staring at snowy owls. And local conservation nonprofits like the Great Bay Discovery Center and the State of New Hampshire’s Endangered Wildlife Program have been fortunate to receive donations of Lynn’s pieces for their fundraising activities.

Lynn says she capitalizes on her NH Made membership to gain valuable visibility that she wouldn’t get through her web site alone.
Let the Seacoast soothe and inspire you – the way it has for Lynn, Elizabeth, and Daniel!

Rob Nadler – Ragged Mountain Equipment
Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism
Intervale, NH
Bretton Woods
White Mountains
A rock climber, Rob Nadler started stitching together some custom rock-climbing gear and selling it out of his car at local gathering spots. A few more sewing machines, refined patterns, and expanded offerings led to a small cottage industry – Ragged Mountain Equipment. Then Rob took the leap to a permanent factory and retail space in the Mt. Washington Valley. For Rob, it’s all about the White Mountains. He enjoys the incredible access to world-class hiking, climbing, backcountry skiing, paddling, mountain biking, and more. These activities provide his business with an energized customer base, and the proximity to the action allows him to test and refine his products right in the neighborhood. Just as the local community supports his business, Rob does what he can to reciprocate. Among other activities, he hosts and supports a local nonprofit ski touring and snowshoeing foundation – from enrolling new members to grooming the trails.
Ever since 1642, when Darby Field became the first European to climb Mount Washington, the White Mountains Region has lured travelers with the promise that they really can get away from it all. The highlights – big hikes, scenic drives, postcardperfect beauty, fine dining, and outlet shopping – give this part of the state something for everyone. You’ll be inspired to plan your next visit before you even head home!
Rob says he’s very proud of his company’s New Hampshire heritage, and finds that customers and suppliers feel very strongly about that connection, too. NH Made plays a big role in that effort, as it gives him a chance to stand proudly among fellow New Hampshire residents, strengthening all New Hampshire businesses in an environment of cooperation and camaraderie.
Valerie & Carl Hill – Photo-Sensitivity Whitefield, NH
Looking for unique holiday gifts for family members in 2000, Valerie and Carl Hill decided to print calendars that included favorite photos and notes for birthdays and anniversaries. Throughout the next year, Valerie received calls requesting enlargements or notecards with favorite images. Carl was the one who suggested turning their family gift creation into a business and Photo-Sensitivity was formed. Valerie says that New Hampshire just begs to be photographed, putting on a show in every season. What she loves most are the mountains, forests, flowers, fields, brooks, and waterfalls – and the fact that she can capture all these in one shot!
Arethusa Falls, Crawford Notch

In addition to donating photographs to raise funds for community projects, Valerie also does public talks on topics ranging from how to best photograph flowers to how to stay safe during winter photo shoots. Some of her donated photos have appeared on the cover of local town annual reports. Being a NH Made member has given Valerie the opportunity to find new markets for her products, and she’s seen her wholesale business increase as a result. And all of this while being able to live in the White Mountain area that she loves!
Rob, Valerie, and Carl get inspiration for their businesses from the White Mountains Region that they love. They hope your visit inspires you, too!
