NH MADE WELCOMES YOU NH Made – an organization that

On the Cover

Donald Hundgen – Hundelrut Studio Plymouth, NH

promotes all things Granite State

Selecting members to feature on the cover is a challenging task. This year we’ve chosen to feature Donald Hundgen of Hundelrut Studio in Plymouth, a lifelong artist and 19-year member of NH Made. Donald and his wife, Sarah, co-owners of the studio and gallery, started simply, with one- and two-color greeting cards when there weren’t many artists doing cards. Working out of their house, they sold at craft shows and did some consignment sales, working up to wholesale and trade shows. The couple’s Plymouth gallery features art made in New Hampshire, much of it right on site.

– is more than 700 members strong, with independent businesses of all types and sizes. Its members pour their passions into everything they make and the experiences they create for residents and visitors alike. We have members who create works of art or offer places for others to sell theirs, some who demonstrate their craft by creating tasty beverages and foods, and others who offer topnotch services to clients. And then there are the restaurant owners, the purveyors of locally made health and beauty products, the attractions that offer a true Granite State experience, the farms and food markets. And the list goes on. This guide will give you a taste of the incredible people and places waiting for you in every region of the state. And you can find a full listing of our members, along with descriptions of their specialties, at nhmade.com.

Donald, who says he hails from big cities with their stress, competition, and high cost of living, credits New Hampshire’s free-spirited nature and casual social tone for nurturing his creativity. The couple has become part of the fabric of the community, giving affordable art lessons to special needs students, bringing art and culture to the area, and offering guidance to newcomers. Donald and Sarah say that NH Made has been a steadying anchor for them, offering the promotion and business development opportunities that are essential in changing economic times. Donald says NH Made has “quite simply, brought us customers.”

Cover Photo

Pamela Sullivan – Sullivan Creative Concord, NH While Pam’s marketing and graphic design firm handles clients far and wide, her passion lies in promoting all things New Hampshire. Sullivan Creative brings more than 30 years of insight on how to get results for clients. Pam credits her talented staff – experienced marketing and creative experts – with the fact that many of their clients have been with them for years. NH Made has had a long-term partnership with Pam and her team, and appreciates the fact that Pam could find a visual way to highlight Donald Hundgen and his Hundelrut Studio on this year’s cover.

Thanks to our NH Made members for the richness they bring to New Hampshire communities. Learn more about NH Made by visiting nhmade.com.

Celebrating ‘Buying Local’ for 20-plus years! New Hampshire Made was formed to highlight the benefit that buying local brings to New Hampshire’s people and its communities. Our members – representing small, independent businesses in the state – work hard to bring their best products and services to locals and visitors alike. But with the demands that that work requires, they may not often take the time to stop to celebrate their success. So we carved out time to do just that: celebrate our history of promoting all things Granite State with a 20th Anniversary Cruise aboard the M/S Mount Washington. Some 150 people dined on locally sourced food while enjoying a cruise around Lake Winnipesaukee. We were fortunate to have a number of presenting sponsors in addition to Mount Washington Cruises, including Fuller’s Sugarhouse LLC, New Hamphire PBS, and The River Radio Network. Our first annual online silent auction concluded in high style aboard the cruise with a showcase of NH Made specialty products and services donated by more than 60 NH Made members.

SAVE THE DATE: OCTOBER 19 - NOVEMBER 1, 2018 Score some great holiday deals at our second annual online auction at 32auctions.com/nhmade2018. (And for more holiday fun, check out the Granite State Ambassadors online auction at 32auctions.com/nhgsa2018, October 26 - November 5.)

Becky & Ben Nelson Beaver Pond Farm Newport, NH

Becky & Ben Nelson of Beaver Pond Farm report that the farm has been in Becky’s family since 1780 as a working enterprise. In 1985, Becky and Ben joined her parents in taking the farm from a part-time venture of hay and beef sales to a thriving business, featuring maple products, vegetables, pick-your-own raspberries, an apple orchard, cider, Christmas trees and wreaths, lamb and, of course, beef. Four years later, they added a retail store for direct sales.

Outdoor Cafe, Hanover

Dartmouth Lake Sunapee Each of 34 towns in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region serves up more than a few surprises. Bordered on the west by the Connecticut River, this outdoor enthusiast’s haven offers endless variety: mountains, lakes, and wooded lanes; pastoral villages and cultural centers; dining, shopping, and high adventure. This is authentic New Hampshire at its best.

Both Becky and Ben feel that belonging to an organization like NH Made that is dedicated to the best of New Hampshire has been an asset in their sales and marketing efforts. Membership has also connected them with other food producers, and visitors have found them as a result of NH Made’s promotional efforts.

Mike & Susan Sadonsky Mountain View Fudge Claremont, NH

When Mike and Susan Sadonsky of Mountain View Fudge closed their fullservice candy store in 1983, little did they know that a related opportunity would arise 17 years later. Susan was in a Bedford gift shop when a call came in from another business owner. The woman had just lost her fudge maker and was desperate, as fudge was a major part of her business. After a meeting a couple of days later, Mountain View Fudge was born. Mike and Susan attribute much of their success to the fact that they’re hardworking Granite Staters, with great smiles, great customer service skills, and great fudge! Fudge fans can enjoy more than 30 varieties. Eager to meet the needs of their customers, the business handles customized orders, too.

Sugar4River Trail, Newport/Claremont | 2018-2019 BUY LOCAL

By operating one of the oldest continuously run family farms in the state, Becky and Ben preserve the unique history of the town and the region and offer the community a place they can count on for local food products raised in a sustainable and responsible way. Giving folks a chance to meet a goat at the farm’s petting zoo or to enjoy a quiet day picking raspberries in the sunshine is a value beyond measure, says Becky.

A NH Made member since 2003, the Sadonsky’s business has grown from a few local wholesale accounts and sales at craft sales and farmers’ markets, to vending at larger fairs and festivals throughout New England. Opportunities to provide fudge for fundraising efforts followed, with 45 percent of proceeds going to the group doing the fundraising. Susan says that they’d love to hear from anyone – from New Hampshire or elsewhere – who feels their delicious, impulse-satisfying fudge would be a fit for their business!

Melissa Grella Root Seller Marketplace Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism

Lancaster, NH

Jericho State Park, Berlin

In 2015, Melissa Grella of Root Seller Marketplace says she saw a need for a yearround outlet for locally grown and produced food. So, Root Seller – an initiative of the nonprofit Taproot Farm and Environmental Education Center – was born. Starting with only a handful of local farmers and crafters selling in the store in the two-plus years since, they’ve grown to include more than 60 local vendors, plus a broad array of local and regional foods from distributors. Melissa says the marketplace exists to provide access to and spread awareness of the local food system to customers and to the region. It also creates an opportunity for local direct vendors – farmers, crafters, and food producers – to grow their businesses and innovate new products. Taproot’s other offerings include an after-school program and summer camps, a gleaning program that supports local food pantries, a community garden for people without green space to grow their own food, and a summer concert series.

Great North Woods The Great North Woods is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise. Here, spotting moose can be a daily event, and trout wait in crystal clear waters. 1,000 miles of snowmobile trails become summer paths for ATVs. Around the corner from a pretty, rural village, you might find a waterfall, a covered bridge, or an eagle soaring above. NH Made members in the Great North Woods find it a great place to live and work.

New Hampshire is a small state that succeeds when everyone joins together as members of a community, Melissa says. She sees the Root Seller Marketplace as reflecting that community spirit, striving to be a hub that brings local entrepreneurs and consumers together, where relationships with friends and neighbors are valued above anything else. NH Made and the Root Seller are a perfect match, Melissa notes. Both want to see the local economy flourish!

Beans & Greens Farm, Gilford

Troy and Jennica Lucas Lucas Roasting Company Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism

Wolfeboro, NH

Lakes With more than 250 bodies of water – including Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest – the Lakes Region has long attracted travelers with its bustling lakeside towns, rolling mountains, and picture-perfect villages. Whether it’s hunting for antiques, cruising the waters, or falling asleep in a cozy inn to the sound of loons, the Lakes Region promises endless fun, relaxation, and days you’ll want to go on forever.

Coffee roasting started as a hobby for Troy and Jennica Lucas of Lucas Roasting Company LLC. It was a nice side item to a small, gourmet biscotti business the couple owned. Jennica says that customers created a bigger demand for the home-roasted coffee than they could keep up with, so the roasting business evolved. Their first roasting was done in a 400-plus square foot facility at their home in Virginia. Their love of the lakes brought them to New Hampshire in 2016, and the couple doubled the size of their production facility and added a small café. Jennica says they love the small, independent business mindset and support, too. And with just an hour to the mountains or the ocean, what’s not to love? Although new to the area, they’ve jumped right in to support many charity events, and support the cross-promotional endeavors that bring focus to their Wolfeboro community. Jennica feels their spirit of adventure, their trailblazing attitude, their hard work and community building embody the spirit of New Hampshire, so they feel right at home here. As relatively new members of NH Made, they’ve already found that the organization connects them to other passionate New Hampshire business owners. They’re looking forward to it opening doors for even more business-to-business relationships, as they make New Hampshire their forever home.

Barbara Platts-Comeau & Bill Comeau Riverview Artisans, LLC Bristol, NH

After many years of displaying and selling items in various venues in their local area, Barbara Platts-Comeau and Bill Comeau of Riverview Artisans decided to take the leap and open a gallery. Once they found a local building with space for rent, they were off and running. Barbara loves that they’re a permanent fixture in the Bristol business community. Barbara and Bill say they feel fortunate to live in a beautiful area of New Hampshire that offers so much for people to enjoy: cultural experiences, lakes, mountains, a scenic countryside, and so much more. Reflecting on nature has always inspired their creativity. Barbara makes sandcast items – such as birdbaths and stepping stones – designed for the garden, and weaves baskets and works felt. Bill, a woodworker, creates trays, egg-timers, utensils, and mirrors from lilac, walnut, apple, birch, and cherry. Together, in their gallery, they offer other artisans a location to display their work. For years, the two have personally supported local schools, fire department, churches, and other nonprofit groups. As a business, they carry on that tradition. Barbara says their membership in NH Made strengthens their ability to partner with others to share the beauty of the Granite State as they offer creations and products that others can cherish in their homes or give as gifts.

Kathy Brodsky of Kathy Brodsky’s Books says she never imagined that, in her mid-50s, she’d find a new career. After she included an original poem in an invitation to a birthday party for her Mom one year, she decided that writing was fun. Building on her psychotherapy background, she started writing poems, cards, and refrigerator magnets. When people encouraged her to write a book, she realized that she had no idea what that would involve. So, she took an adult education course at Concord High School on how to publish a book. She remembers the instructor telling students that, “You can do all this, and you never know where it may lead.” Kathy believed her – and now, some dozen books later, she realizes the advice worked! Giving back to the community involves making presentations at schools and libraries, in bookstores and to private groups in New Hampshire, and other parts of the country. She’s also a presenter for the Children’s Literacy Foundation, which encourages reading and donates books through a grant program to children in schools, daycare programs and other organizations in New Hampshire and Vermont. Through this program, children are given brand new books – which many have never owned.

The Merrimack Valley offers visitors and residents a wide range of experiences, from rural Canterbury that’s home to a peaceful Shaker Village, to the state’s largest city of Manchester with its entertainment arenas and top-notch dining, to New Hampshire’s gold-domed capitol city of Concord. NH Made members report that it’s a vibrant region in which to live, play and work.

Kathy finds that NH Made gives local businesspeople like her a platform to promote her products, and because of the group’s efforts, she has been given a sense of community.

Kathy Brodsky Kathy Brodsky’s Books

Julie Robinson of Birds on the Wing Design Studio, a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen in fiber arts as a rug hooker, says jewelry became her passion a few years ago because it’s organic in nature, just as is designing rugs. Julie – who has always loved to create things – says that the colors and textures she finds in New Hampshire’s forests, fields, mountains, and ocean provide rich inspiration for her work. As a wildlife biologist for nearly 30 years, she would often find items – such as sea glass from New Hampshire’s beaches or antlers from the forests – to use in her jewelry or felting projects. Because there is so much diversity in New Hampshire’s landscape, Julie loves the fact that she can go from the mountains to the ocean in just a few hours. A believer in giving back to the community, Julie serves on her town’s Conservation Commission, and is a strong supporter of the state’s Becoming an Outdoors Woman program. Julie appreciates that NH Made celebrates the state’s artistic community because she believes that locally made products are a big part of what makes New Hampshire so great. She says that NH Made helps both residents and visitors find local artisans while traveling throughout the state. She also has found a supportive arts community in the Merrimack Valley.

Monadnock Today, in all seasons, the beauty of the Monadnock Region inspires artists and writers, just as it did in the days when Emerson and Thoreau were frequent visitors. You can enjoy its scenic byways, serene lakes, and woodsy walks, as well as historic theatres, and a wealth of dining and shopping locales.

Bill Whyte started Badger in 1995 when, as a carpenter working in cold New Hampshire winters, he created an amazing balm that helped heal his dry, cracked hands and fingers. Twenty-one years later, still family owned and family run, Badger now formulates, manufactures, and ships more than 100 products from a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly facility in rural Gilsum.

Deirdre reports that, when Badger was small and growing, NH Made connected it to the region and to opportunities beyond local and regional borders. It brought the company into the homes and businesses of the people who make New Hampshire unique. She says that NH Made still connects Badger to all corners of the state, helping it remember its roots and the importance of being – and remaining – local.

Deirdre Fitzgerald, W.S. Badger’s marketing and PR manager, says that Badger demonstrates its commitment to workers by offering benefits and programs such as Babies at Work -- Waldorf-inspired childcare for the children of employees – as well as extended paid parental leave, and organic lunches served free daily to all employees. Badger supports the broader community by donating 10% of annual pre-tax profits to nonprofit organizations that focus on the health and welfare of children and to organizations serving the local community. The company also provides paid time off for employees to volunteer in the community and matches a percentage of employee contributions to charitable causes. And then there are the product donations to local organizations.

Bill Whyte W. S. Badger Company

In 1975 Nick Calvetti, Sr. left his longtime job as an egg distributor to become a salesperson for a label manufacturer. After a few years, Nick went out on his own and founded Amherst Label. His wife helped set up and run an office for the new firm, and, within a few years, his son, Nick Jr., joined the firm to work with his father. Dawn Mahoney, Amherst Label’s sales manager, says that, for 40 years, the company has been going the extra mile to please its customers. It’s veteran- and family-owned (fourth generation), with lots of brothers and sisters, fathers, mothers, nieces, and aunts in the business. She says that New Hampshire has it all — scenery, recreation, industry, education, community. Within easy reach of the company’s facility are corn fields leading to the banks of a scenic river, great ice cream, a fitness center, two easily accessible waterfalls, and dozens of delicious lunch destinations. Caring for the community – whether it’s coaching youth sports teams, donating to the Boys and Girls Club or the local food pantries, sponsoring civic golf tournaments or supporting other area causes – comes with the territory. A manufacturer of custom labels, decals and other specialty printing, Amherst Label sees people who are making things in NH as its ideal customers: craftspeople; producers of specialty foods; wineries, breweries and distilleries. And Dawn says that NH Made has connected the company with these producers. Amherst Label has been a member since NH Made was founded 20 years ago.

Ryan Thomson Captain Fiddle Music Courtesy: NH Division of Travel & Tourism

Lee, NH

Applecrest Farm Orchards, Hampton Falls

Seacoast It’s amazing how much sea, sun, and fun you can pack into an 18-mile stretch of coastline! The fact that it’s the shortest coast in the East doesn’t mean that it’s short on adventure and New Hampshire hospitality. Enjoy Portsmouth’s vibrant downtown life, hit the beach, or head a bit inland to enjoy more Seacoast charm. With wonderful restaurants throughout the region, don’t forget to bring your appetite!

Making music is a generations-long family tradition for the Thomson family, and Ryan Thomson of Captain Fiddle Music enthusiastically joined in at an early age. After winning a national fiddle award and being selected to join a Nashville touring band, he decided on a career in music. For several years, Ryan hosted folk and fiddling radio shows on WUNH and WEVO. One day, the program director, while announcing his show, called him “Captain Fiddle,” and the name stuck. Ryan’s son, Brennish, asked for his own fiddle at age 2. Now, as the Fiddling Thomsons, the two have performed together in such far-flung locations as California, England, and China. Ryan enjoys that many of their performances include traditional music from New Hampshire and the New England area. And, their audio recordings, books, and instructional videos are produced and published locally. Ryan says his family loves the state’s rural nature and the fact that Granite Staters appreciate hard work and honor cultural roots. He gives back to the community, too, by performing at charity events and hosting informal music-making gatherings for those learning to play folk music. In 2000, while performing at the Smithsonian’s Celebrate New Hampshire Festival in Hopkinton, Ryan was introduced to NH Made. The idea of an organization that promoted New Hampshire-made goods had a strong appeal, and he’s been an active member ever since.

Rick Little Shadcreek Flies Hampstead, NH

Rick Little of Shadcreek Flies began tying flies in 1968. While in his first fly-tying class, he learned three very important characteristics for effective flies: color, proportion and sparseness. Over the years he’s tried many approaches to his craft but has come to realize that replicating a natural insect or bait fish is not nearly as important as imparting an illusion of a life force that will trigger a fish to respond. Rick says what drives him in part is that, with each cast, he wants anglers using his flies to experience the wonders of New Hampshire’s rivers and streams. And, when they finish fishing and put that fly back in their fly box, he wants each angler to have a smile. In our Internet-based world, Rick notes, it’s easy to get products that are good, but it is the local craftsmen who care about their products and their customers, and who can add something special to the products they create. And Rick gives that special something back to the community, too. Shadcreek Flies donates to a wide range of conservation groups throughout the state and does presentations for Scout groups to stimulate interest in conservation, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Rick says displaying the NH Made logo – a perk of membership – helps reinforce to his customers the value of craftsmanship and of buying local.

Mark LaClair Seven Birches Winery

Lincoln, NH

Lupines, Sugar Hill

In addition to the White Mountains offering all the activities and opportunities that Mark and his family want in the place they call home, the area also brings thousands of visitors to the region, making for a great place to make and sell wine.

White Mountains

Mark has been involved in the region’s business community for 14 years, managing resort properties, helping businesses grow, and now making his own way with the winery. Mark finds the community very supportive, and he gives back by supporting local nonprofit groups with his time and effort. He especially values his partnership with the Western White Mountains Chamber of Commerce and NH Made.

Ever since 1642, when Darby Field became the first European to climb Mount Washington, the White Mountains Region has lured travelers with the promise that they really can get away from it all. The highlights – big hikes, scenic drives, postcardperfect beauty, fine dining, and outlet shopping – give this part of the state something for everyone. You’ll be inspired to plan your next visit before you even head home!

Being a member of NH Made, Mark says, has helped him find local goods to sell in his tasting room and gift shop. He says the organization uses its statewide reach to showcase what the Granite State has to offer.

Bob & Robin Kosstrin R & R Woodworkers Jackson, NH In 2002, Bob & Robin Kosstrin of R & R Woodworkers were in the market for some cedar Adirondack furniture, but thought that the prices for what they could find were too high. What to do? They decided they could build their own. After working through many designs, they settled on what they found to be an exceptionally comfortable, high-quality Adirondack chair – at an affordable price!

In high school, Mark LaClair of Seven Birches Winery said that his best friend’s family made wine in their basement, which he thought was just the coolest thing. He swore that one day he would make wine himself. Fifteen years later, he started making wine at home as a hobby. When friends encouraged him to sell his “Not Bad” wine, in 2010 he found the perfect partners in Windy Ridge Orchard. The business moved to the grand new RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain in 2016.

They’re proud that they’re continuing the New Hampshire traditions of manufacturing and forestry. R & R Woodworkers uses locally sourced cedar in all of its products – and draws upon Yankee ingenuity when designing new products. Bob and Robin find it special that they live in a small, beautiful state, and especially like being located in the White Mountains. They say that the people who live in the region are rugged and caring – and they celebrate that they have so many wonderful friends and neighbors. Very supportive of local organizations and charities, Bob and Robin have donated pieces of furniture and birdhouses to their local conservation and senior citizen centers, and to support fundraisers for youth Nordic skiing and other local organizations. Bob and Robin credit NH Made with helping them to promote their business, giving them more exposure to residents and visitors, and generating new orders.
