EUROPEAN FOOD INFORMATION COUNCIL (EUFIC): FOOD FACTS FOR HEALTHY CHOICES The European Food Information Council (EUFIC) is a nonprofit organisation with a mission to offer accessible, appealing and actionable science-based information on food and health and to inspire and empower people to make better decisions about diet and lifestyle. EUFIC covers a wide range of topics on nutrition, lifestyle and health, food safety, food quality, legislation and food risk communication. We review food- and health-related scientific literature and translate the science into a language that people can understand. Our range of communication materials includes: • Scientific reviews • Webinars • Interviews with experts • Articles, Q&As • Infographics • Animation videos • Booklets BRINGING THE SCIENCE TO EVERYBODY, ALL CHANNELS MATTER
Established in 1995, EUFIC has gained a reputation over the years, as a trustworthy source of information, useful for health professionals to update their knowledge and share it with clients. EUFIC’s materials are freely accessible on www.eufic.org. An estimated 40% of our audience are health professionals, scientists and educators. To ensure the outreach across Europe, our website is available in 13 languages and has the Health On the Net (HON) certification, a code of conduct that certifies that content offers a multi-stakeholder consensus on standards to protect citizens from misleading health information. 61

Another significant development has been the launch of Cool Food Planet, an educational website about health, nutrition and food safety for children, aged between six and 12 at www.coolfoodplanet.org. HELPING PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOUR
To update your knowledge on the science of behaviour change, read EUFIC’s comprehensive review Motivating behaviour change, which presents approaches to behaviour change and highlights evidence of their effectiveness. Furthermore, the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD), the University of Bath and EUFIC have created a set of behaviour change resources with demonstration videos for dietitians. From science to practice, these evidence-based resources support dietitians and other health professionals to use behaviour change techniques in practice. We collaborate with a broad network of academics, national and international organisations, businesses and professionals in food and health. We work with Scientific Advisory and Editorial Boards and independent experts on specific projects. They advise on the scientific direction and ensure the accuracy and impartiality of EUFIC’s work.
Participation at European and international conferences and seminars is important to maintain a connection with the research community, as well as that of their associated EU-funded projects. Furthermore, we carry out consumer research with academic experts, to find out people’s perceptions, views and preferences around food. Every year EUFIC attends the European Obesity Summit, where we ask researchers and experts for their tips on how to combat this epidemic. SPEAKING UP FOR SCIENCE ACTION NETWORK (SuSAN)
Together with a network of experts, we have established the Speaking up for Science Action
Network (SuSAN), an initiative that supports expert reaction to inaccurate or unbalanced media reporting on food safety and nutrition, or coverage of poorly designed scientific studies. The network provides experts with accurate and responsible scientific information that helps them to curtail the harmful propagation of misinformation. The vision that brings the experts together is enhanced accuracy and responsible reporting of food safety and nutrition science information in the media, for the benefit of society at large. For more information on the initiative, please contact us at SuSAN secretariat (susan. secretariat@susan-project.eu) to learn more, or to get involved.
