Module Title

DESIGN PRODUCTION - DIGITAL

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION NAME Niall Cuickshank-Sutton 1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? This module was obviously very software based and therefore I have gained a considerable amount of knowledge in a short space of time about After Effects, I feel although I have found this module hard I have taken to After effects well and feel this has helped me to produce a good standard of work in in what seemed like a short period of time. This is linked with another aspect of my project which I feel was strong, time management, despite every week blurring into one another I feel I coped with the demands and put some extra hours into the briefs and I got the work done with the time constraints but more importantly I was able to have a significant amount of work done at critical points to gain feedback therefore I was able to amend and adapt my work hopefully creating a better piece in the process.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? One of the main aspects of this brief and the approach we had to take to create the work we produced was story boarding, although I still have many issues with story boarding, many my efficiency in creating them and the legibility of them. Despite this I have become more proficient at story boarding and it is a way of working that informs your work well for a brief such as this. In terms of development of the work I did not go back to the story boards after crits but I instead stayed close to After Effects, reflecting on the project this could have been detrimental as it may have taken less time to take a break and tried to get my ideas down onto a page.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? In terms of my final out come, for ‘top ten’, I think the sound track, I have created work really well, and therefore creating the simple movements of the iconic film imagery was easier to design for but also they tied into the music well creating a good effect. On a more broad level encompassing the entire module I think I have really developed my time management skills, I think I have significantly improved since the beginning of the

second year but even more so than the beginning of the course, This was especially important regarding this kind of time consuming project.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? Story boarding and idea generation, I found with I was bouncing from one idea to another at the beginning of the project, having a solid theme and idea but no solid way to execute my project this lead to a waste of well set out time, and I think if I had created better and more story boards I could have avoided this. Instead I made several ident that I did not use at all, despite this I did feel the making of the idents I did not use helped me get my head around the software so in turn it was as useful as it was not useful.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these? -

More Story boarding, its something I didn’t get fully to grips with throughout the project but I think it would have helped me.

-

A greater body of supporting work, research etc… I feel I have spent a lot of time on the computer and perhaps this has clouded other aspect of the module.

-

I feel I took along time to get my head around the software, this is unlike me I am usually quick at learning software this held me back as I could and I know I should have been on this software.

-

Sleep more; I didn’t go to bed until at least 2am every night since the beginning of this module so I should amend that.

-

Just more design work! Loads more design!

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an ʻxʼ) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1

Attendance Punctuality / Motivation / Commitment / Quantity of work produced / Quality of work produced N/A Contribution to the group The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
