Connectivity
Using the space syntax software, I tested the physical connectivity of the inital urban masterplan. Space Syntax studies the impact that the physical layout of cities has on the social, organisational and economic performance of urban areas. Developed by researchers at The Bartlett (University College London’s global faculty of the built environment), this theory is used to give streets an ‘accessibility’ score, denoting how well a street is linked to the wider layout of a city: for example, if it is a dead end, its score would be low. Streets are then plotted on a map using different colours for different levels of accessibility – with red meaning more accessible streets and cold colours like blue representing less accessible ones. Using this methodology I slightly amended the masterplan so it now has “better connectivity”, which defined the siting of ‘Barrio Zeitgeist’, the citizen built mixed use block. From bottom left: Space Syntax axial plan to determine connectivity of masterplan; site model with arrow through street with highest connectivity; final model of scheme with context

This project examines the question; How can open source, floodable housing become a catalyst for building a resilient adaptable urban community in a post-industrial wasteland? Citizen built neighbourhood using the wikihouse construction system which aims to democratise and simplify the construction of sustainable, resource-light dwellings. Wikihouse enables users to download Creative Commons-licensed building plans from its online library, customize them using SketchUp, and then use them to create jigsaw puzzle-like pieces out of plywood with a CNC router. The frame of a wikihouse can be assembled in less than a day by people with no formal training in construction. This is referred to as the ‘barn raising’. From bottom left; view of ‘barn raising’, construction happening ; wikihouse structure - Farmhouse; exploded axonometric of scheme; housing typologies designed using Wikihouse Rules

17th century Closes were Edinburghs most vibrant streets, open to the skies and bustling with traders, these streets would later be demolised and reused. In the 18th century the area was redeveloped, into the citys first commercial shopping district built, on foundations of old closes.

This feasibility study looks at how to maximise the proposed residential acommodation, within 3 blocks, which are part of the proposed Edinburgh St James’s Centre masterplan, which has been granted planning permission. We proposed one option, to increase the number of units by creating a narrow central street through the middle of blocks B & C. This also gives an attractive raised street environment and lots of bright and airy dual aspect units.

The Brief Working within the framework of the approved masterplan by Fielden Clegg Bradley, the brief calls for theprovision of approximately 200 Private Rent units and associated amenities along with approximately 40 private-sale units. I worked on this project as part of a 6 person team of architects and architectural assistants. HTA propose 3 blocks - JAB, J4A AND J3. Two of them connected by southfacing linked courtyards, and the third landmark block adjacent to them.

The Brief To design a new mixed-used neighborhood of high residential density on a city central site. At an urban level, your proposal needs to create a new centre of activitiy and community, improve accessibility in the area and connectivity to the east side of the railway station. It is expected that your scheme will bring vitality and diversity into the area and contribute to its social well-being, generate jobs and be environmentally conscientious.
