LARRY MCNUTT HEAD OF SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS AND ENGINEERING
WELCOME TO KALEIDOSCOPE 2013 Many thanks once again for your kind invitation to contribute to the printed record of your end of year celebrations! This will be the second Creative Digital Media Graduate showcase – and we know from the experiences of last year’s inaugural event – that you need to experience the occasion to really get a sense of the wonderfully rich and inventive output from your collective endeavours. Creativity and innovation have always been an integral part of the Irish nation – with some of the greatest examples to be seen in the areas of music, theatre, art, dance, film, television, radio , poetry and prose to mention a few. Technology has provided us with another dimension to explore and enhance our inner imaginings – to reach a new audience and to inspire others.
3
Your work has and will continue to shape and expand the creative digital media field and ensure that it will continue to evolve in new directions. Your work is the capstone of four years of hard work – perhaps at times characterised by frustration INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY BLANCHARDSTOWN
and exhaustion but hopefully also sprinkled with moments of satisfaction and enjoyment! You have reached the top of the academic mountain – and it is appropriate to reflect on David McCullagh Jnr’s address to his Schools graduating class that they should “Climb the mountain so that they should see the world, not so the world can see you”. I have no doubt your experiences over the past four years will help you shape how you see the world by continuing to create new opportunities and forging new friendships. We have a great example from one of last year’s graduates Dean McMenamin (http://deanmcmenamin.com/about-me/) who has embarked on his own unique journey to see the world by cycling to India. This event is a celebration of your achievements - an opportunity for all of us to mark this juncture in your academic career, only one thread in your life’s unique tapestry – the final pattern has yet to be woven.

DR. BRIAN NOLAN HEAD OF DEPARTMENT INFORMATICS AND CREATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
The third level college experience is hugely important not just for the skills and new knowledge we learn but also for the many way in which it shapes our character. The years spent in college as an undergraduate always have a particular resonance in later years and remembered with warmth. These undergraduate times are always associated in our minds with wonderful new experiences and new friendships that last years, with a process of self discovery and self-reflection, and character formation … and, of course, lots of fun! When the undergraduate years are spent on a creative digital media arts degree in the Internet cloud connected age then we expect creativity and artistry to be important dimensions of that experience. Selfexpression is then coupled with significant
individual creativity, as we see here in this body of student work. In this Internet connected digital age that is the twenty-first century in Dublin, where all the significant global digital corporations have European headquarters, we find that our students are expressing themselves creatively with significant artistry in this digital world of web, audio, video, film and mobile apps. This is exactly what you will find in our exhibition of work by the ITB degree students of the Creative Digital Media programme. The enthusiasm and energy of the students is self- evident and the projects are spectacular. These students can think differently and think creatively, and express themselves clearly in wonderful ways in this new digital world. These are wonderful students and this is a wonderful show.
ENJOY! BRIAN

SIMON ELLIS A CLOCKWORK RABBIT A SHORT 3D ANIMATION FILM FOLLOWING A CLOCKWORK RABBITS ADVENTURE
11
For my final year project I have created a 3D animated short film titled A Clockwork Rabbit. The film begins from inside a rabbit where you can see the intricate detail of his cogs and gears spinning around. But as the camera pans outside we can see that the winder key on his back has begun to slow down and come to a stop. This short film follows the rabbit’s journey through his unusual world as he tries to wind up the clockwork mechanism that powers him. I created every visual from scratch in this animation using the 3D modelling software Blender. INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY BLANCHARDSTOWN

They are required to solve a series of puzzles, and overcome a set of challenges, to guide the fisherman through his day. The game has been built using a set of technologies, including Adobe Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Visionaire Studio. INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY BLANCHARDSTOWN
CIARAN LOWREY MASON MASON, A SHORT ACTION/THRILLER FILM THAT FOLLOWS A NEW SUPER SOLDIER WHOSE FIRST MISSION IS TO CAPTURE AN ARMS DEALER 14
Mason follows a super soldier working for an Interpol Task Force known as SIRTA. His first mission it to take down a notorious arms dealer and find out who the mole in the agency is. With the help of his team and a Vital Signs Chip that can enhance his abilities, he plans out an elaborate and risky mission so he can take both targets down at once. The idea behind the two main characters, Mason and Mercer, was to make you question, “who really is the good guy?” Everything from the script, logo and musical score is all original. As-well as writing, directing, producing and editing the film, I also acted as the main character. Mason was written as a short film with a feature film scope. DAIRE O’ SUILLEABHAIN CHUCKEY OUR LAW A COMEDIC, SHORT FILM FOLLOWING THREE CHARACTERS AND THEIR PLANS TO DISRUPT THE QUEEN’S VISIT TO DUBLIN 21
Chuckey Our Law is a shot film about three young men and their attempt to protest The Queen’s visit. As well a being a satire of armchair republicanism in Ireland today, it’s also the story of the realisation that you have outgrown your friends. After learning about the historic visit of The Queen to Dublin, the guys take it onto themselves to stage a protest to disrupt her visit. Unfortunately, they only have one night to come up with a plan as she is leaving Dublin the next day. They debate amongst themselves as to what they should do. Their ignorance of political and cultural issues is obvious and their desire to act as if they are making a change does more harm than good. Ultimately, their planning amounts to nothing. Interactive magazines are becoming ever more popular and the features that InDesign CS6 allows, is greatly adding to this new era in technology. Being able to promote this course through such a medium is a great chance to show prospective ITB students what the course has to offer, not only through words but through video and interactivity.
