Essaouira I’d like to introduce you to our Essaouira Collection, named for the gorgeous Moroccan coastal city of Essaouria with its whitewashed houses, blue waters and golden sands. Since I first discovered Morocco when I was in college, I’ve had a love affair with all things Moroccan. From the delicious food to the music to the architecture, there is a richness of beauty and culture that I’ve never found anywhere else. Traditional Moroccan designs and the colors of the landscape inspired the creation of these rugs. The designs have a strong ethnic feeling, reminiscent of Moroccan architecture, textiles and ceramics. The colors reflect the colors of the landscape. And each design is named for a town or architectural element. We incorporated subtle imperfections that you would normally find in hand-knotted rugs into the designs themselves, making them look old and hand crafted. For example, certain design elements are off-center, or lines might appear a little wavy. Most of the rugs in this collection are woven using a combination of fibers, suggesting the different landscapes and textures of Morocco – from the desert to the mountains to the traditional earthen houses. I hope you will love these as much as I do.

Moroccan culture has had an enormous influence on Spain over the centuries. Tangerino, Spanish for “from Tangier,� reflects the bright, luminous colors of both southern Spain and northern Morocco.

Timbuktu

In the late 1500s the Moroccan king conquered Timbuktu, now in Mali, in order to control its valuable salt mines. This rug design suggests the Moroccan mosaics and mud brick architecture that left its mark on the ancient city of Timbuktu.

Atlas Mountain

The High Atlas is the biggest mountain range in North Africa—with green, fertile valleys crisscrossed by rivers and waterfalls. The majestic peaks are suggested in the dynamic, angular design of this rug.

At the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula, just across the water from Morocco, lies Gibaltar, a British territory. The famed Rock of Gibraltar was one of the Pillars of Hercules—and is home to hundreds of monkeys called Barbary Macaques.

Casbah, or citadel in Arabic, refers to the beautiful walled cities of North Africa. They are usually built on top of hills, affording the citizens a wide view to make them easier to defend. The casbah of Aït Benhaddou in Morocco is one of the world’s architectural treasures.
