We’ve come a long way since the beginning of 2023. Speaking of community: in March we opened our Niche Beauty corner at UZWEI, Hamburg’s first address for luxury fashion and objects that go beyond seasonal obsessions. And last but not least: the future. We called this issue the “Lust for Life” issue because we decided to dedicate it to the concept of longevity. HOW ANNE ZIMMERMANN GETS IT DONE

Niche Beauty’s Managing Director Anne Zimmerman explains how she stays at the top of her game – from what she looks for in brands to who she goes to when she needs good advice and the products she’s currently betting all her cards on – partially because they do wonders for the beauty routine, and partially because they look exceptionally good on the top shelf. Beauty is, after all, about being easy on the eyes.
On what a brand needs to join the Niche Beauty portfolio… I believe that beauty business as a whole is about quality of products, quality of storytelling and a certain level of emotional connectivity. At Niche Beauty we’re not only following the “Strictly selective, strictly luxury” motto, we also have a firstto-market strategy, meaning we love brands that are new and undiscovered, brands that we can introduce to the market and then also help them grow. Given the nature of our business we are looking for curated luxury appeal – luxury in terms of high-quality ingredients, efficacy, something that is tried and tested, that tackles a known problem from a fresh perspective. We’re also very much into interesting founder stories because commerce can no longer exist without good content.
On how she decided on a career in beauty…
I’ve always loved beautiful things, be it fashion, interior design or rare finds I brought back from my travels. My career in beauty, however, was unplanned. I started in fashion at Peek & Cloppenburg
and then landed at Douglas where I was responsible for launching the trendy, up-and-coming brands. Parallel to that I have been a dedicated Niche Beauty customer from the very beginning and found it spoke directly to me through its curated, precise portfolio of brands that had that “X factor” and truly made a difference. Imagine my delightful surprise when, in 2022, I got a call from my mentor and former Douglas CEO Tina Müller and got offered my dream job.
On what helps her get it done…
Travel, full stop. There is something particularly inspiring about a new place with fresh energy – it’s stimulating and opens your mind in unexpected ways. I also have to say that I’m a firm believer in “me time”, meaning I diligently schedule activities that help me quiet the mind and find inner balance. I ushered in the new year with a retreat at Lanserhof on Sylt. It brought me immense relaxation and grounding while also sharpening my focus in terms of what is important in 2024.

On who she goes to when she needs really good advice… My parents for unconditional emotional support (as we know moms are always right and dads are the best protectors), my best friend Ina for practical advice (I just couldn’t do it without her –we talk multiple times every day and she truly always has an ear for me) and Dr. Barbara Sturm in all things beauty because she not only has an incredible vision, but is also a source of constant inspiration as an entrepreneur and doctor.
On the launch she is particularly excited about… We’ve been on a roll at Niche Beauty and are launching new brands almost weekly, but the next brand I am thrilled about is Lisa Eldridge. She is my favorite Youtube “how-to” person and has a very unique view of the beauty industry, having worked both as an in-demand makeup artist and Creative Director (at Lancôme, among others). When she announced that she’ll be launching her own brand, I got extra excited, partially because the brand also focuses on lipsticks with fantastic texture and longlasting color. As someone who has made it her mission to always wear a red lip, I can’t wait to expand my personal collection and add a couple of new shades onto the shelf (laughs).
On her favorite beauty product and in-office treatment she splurges on… I test a lot of skincare products and yet I always come back to the tried-and-tested classics that I know will leave my skin supple and well-nourished. Augustinus Bader’s The Cream is a staple, and so is Dr. Levy’s Intense Stem Cell Booster Serum
to battle tiny wrinkles and crow’s feet. Another product I love is DOCTOR MI!’s Super Red Retinol Serum that makes a visible difference to the skin in as little as two weeks. I also cannot recommend Lyma laser enough – it’s as close as you’ll get to an in-office experience at home. Speaking of in-office treatments: I swear by radiofrequency needling. It’s painful, but truly works by stimulating the collagen production, leaving your complexion lifted, fresh and visibly younger.
On the next “it” ingredient on everyone’s list… Dr. Barbara Sturm educated me on exosomes, the tiny particles that are responsible for the communication between cells and release growth factors that promote skin regeneration. Dr. Sturm launched the Exoso-Metic range that helps replace exosomes and is an effective treatment for skin aging. Mark my words – we’ll be hearing a lot more about exosomes in the future.
On her approach to longevity…
I think longevity directly speaks to a life well lived and a life well lived is always about balance. Balance between discipline and treats. A well-designed routine and a night out with friends. Eating well, but treating yourself to a glass of great champagne. I love staying active and doing sports most days of the week. I eat a healthy diet and look after my skin, but never at the cost of joy. A night of dancing makes me happy, and happiness makes up for a long, healthy life.

Few things are as alluring as juicy lips, and few master them as well as Fara Homidi, the New York-based makeup artist Hollywood stars can’t get enough of. Her own product line is now expanding into complexion – a proof that good skin is trending in 2024. Our verdict? A must-try!
When did you know you wanted to be a makeup artist and why did you decide to launch with lips?
Some of my first memories are of makeup and from a young age I was drawn to beauty and fashion. I grew up in a small town in California that wasn’t fashion or beauty-forward. Magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and W were my window into an aspirational world of glamor. From the moment I could, I have worked with makeup and now with over 25 years of experience as a professional makeup artist I felt ready to put my collection into the world. Lips felt like a natural step for me to start with as I have always mixed my own lip colors on sets and for runway shows, to customize perfect shades for the models.
Tips and tricks for creating that perfect statement lip?
I recommend applying your shade in layers starting from the inside of the lip working outwards – especially when you’re working with a bolder shade (like a red). For a budge-free application I’ll first go over the entire lip with my Smudge & Contour Lip Pencil in a matching shade to lock in the color and perfect the lip shape. My makeup artist’s trick is blurring the edges of the lip with a small brush and translucent powder so that the product doesn’t move around or bleed.
What makeup trend are you most excited about for spring and summer?
I don’t think there is anything more exciting than skin, and different skin finishes excite me the most. Are we going 90’s matte, translucent marble and statuesque, or glassy finish? You can really elevate an outfit, just by the skin finish you choose!
What are you most proud of?
I’m so proud of creating brand new formulas that aren’t currently existing on the market, and really pushing the labs to create new innovative and clean products. I have a new complexion product that is coming out this spring, and it’s absolutely revolutionary. It’s the first complexion product that allows you to customize your finish – and it’s my runway skin made easy.
What other products can we look forward to this year?
You can expect a new product in the lip category, an exciting addition to my luxe lip wardrobe. It truly is stunning and addictive –I have finished several lab samples already… so they finally sent me samples in jumbo packaging! (DV)

For more than 25 years makeup artist Loni Baur worked on countless fashion weeks, created signature celebrity looks and editorial photoshoots. Our colleague Kathrin Käsemann visited her on the set of Niche Beauty’s cover shoot.
It’s 8:30 AM, and Loni Baur is brimming with energy. Dressed in a stylish, casual outfit (black turtleneck, pleated trousers, white sneakers), she’s cheerfully dragging several XXL suitcases, looking fresh and definitely awake. “My party animal days are over. I am very disciplined and go to bed early, especially if I have a shoot coming up.
I start my days with coffee and affirmations,” she says when I ask her about how she slept. Her philosophy? Bringing her inner sunshine to every set. “Check,” I note.
After breakfast (Franzbrötchen) and discussing the looks, Loni starts prepping the model: skin, hair, nails. We go through her beauty suitcase together: from Kevyn Aucoin’s iconic blush shades to coveted concealers by Kosas and the the entire Westman Atelier portfolio, she’s equipped
with a range of products that not only make every beauty heart skip a bit, but are also responsible for models looking fabulous. “Niche Beauty products are indispensable –they’re my high-quality essentials,” Loni raves.

From its launch in 2006, Escentric Molecules’ Molecule 01 has crossed over from being a fragrance to being a cultural phenomena. Danaja Vegelj explores why this particular scent became a signifier of an identity everybody wanted to claim.
Being backstage of a fashion show in early 2007 felt like entering a parallel universe. It was hazy and vibrant and buzzing and laced with anticipation, and it all felt strange to me, partially because I was new to the whole fashion thing and hence equally as nervous as I was excited, and partially because I was asked last-minute to walk a show for Maison Margiela –a task I dreaded. As the stylist’s assistant, I wasn’t a model, I was too short and also determined to work behind the cameras rather than in front of them, but the producers ran out of girls to walk the runway, and before I could object, I was dressed in flesh-colored tights, a bold structured jacket and black sci-fi sunglasses. Despite all odds, I managed not to stumble.
I went home with a plethora of new obsessions: fashion, for starters, but also a proclivity for Margiela’s creations, and another, more quiet one – the scent that seemed to be everywhere that day and that pulsed through the insides of my head in well-measured intervals, a smell of excitement but also sophistication and velvety edginess that I knew I’ll never
forget. I later found out from the producers that the scent that haunted me had a name: Molecule 01, and that it was made by a brand called Escentric Molecules, and that yes, everybody was already on it.
For the next couple of years it was impossible to work in fashion and not be intimately familiar with Molecule 01 –you could catch a whiff of it on models, photographers, fashion editors. The stars wore it, their assistants wore it, everyone wore it – it was a scent that defined an era in fashion, an identity. It was who we were. Who we collectively chose to become.
The parfumeur Geza Schoen credits its existence to a single aroma-molecule Iso E Super that isn’t present in nature and was created in a laboratory in 1973. Until the launch of Molecule 01 in 2006 Iso E Super was never used in such high concentration, but its singularity within the formula gave room to the wearer, resulting in a fragrance as unique as an individual’s DNA. Molecule 01 seamlessly blends with the skin’s own pH and develops slightly differently on everyone.
Sometimes you smell it fully evolved and wide open, piercing and juicy, sometimes it’s hidden, shy and barely there. It comes in waves and is impossible to get tired of –you have my word.
Over the years Escentric Molecules portfolio grew through many incredible fragrances, each a conceptual masterpiece on its own, but it was the Molecule 01 that not only started a movement, but also taught me how a scent can become a style rather than an accessory. Many people say that it smells like sex, but for me it’s a reminder that there was once a time when I was twenty-and-a-half years old and the whole world stretched out in front of me. I need that reminder sometimes.

Do you create products with a specific woman in mind?
I try to consider every woman and what they might want from a product in terms of performance, trust, joy, experience, luxury and ingredients – I am never just thinking of myself. I’m constantly contemplating on how we can make a product that already exists in a way that’s better.
How has the beauty industry changed from when you first launched Westman Atelier? Does a customer now want bigger, bolder, more colorful? I wouldn’t say our customer does, but the beauty industry as a whole is ever evolving. I’d say we are mostly committed to the mindset and our philosophy as opposed to shifting trends. We are more focused on building a brand with a specific mission – and our customer understands this.
What’s your personal favorite Lip Suede Matte Lipstick shade?
I can’t choose one, I made ten of them! Je Rêve would be my every single day ‟go to”. Lou Lou is very near and dear to my heart because it is such a striking shade. You can either make it dramatic or just a stain; it changes your look and complexion completely, which I love. It is so simple.
What makes Lip Suede Matte Lipstick one of a kind?
The entire formula – I don’t think there is anything comparable out there. We don’t use any petrochemicals, silicones and spherical powders. Every single active ingredient is included at efficacy levels. Plus, we have our Hydro Suede Technology and patent-

What does your morning routine look like?
After a shower with haircare products by Elizabeta Zefi I apply Maison Madame’s Le Sérum. From time to time I also add Royal Fern’s ampoule to give my skin an extra boost – the brand’s founder Dr. Timm Golücke is my go-to dermatologist. Afterwards, I put on a moisturizer – Sisley and Clé de Peau Beauté are my favorites.
Who is your inspiration when it comes to beauty and why?
I like positive and charismatic women –Julianne Moore has aged really well and, at 63, looks incredible! Her makeup is also always on point, not too much, nor too little – a true inspiration!
Maison Madame launched Le Sérum that focuses on women approaching (or already in) menopause. What are some tips for skincare in times of change?
I’ll be candid and say a great serum (like ours, of course) is a must! It provides the face and cleavage with an extra layer of moisture while also bringing effective antiaging results. A good eye serum and eye cream are also key – people tend to first look you in the eyes and if your eyes look fresh and well-rested with little wrinkles, your overall appearance gives off a healthier, younger energy.
How about lifestyle tips that help ease into menopause?
Trust me on this one: a good OB/GYN. Someone who really listens and takes the time to look into your individual needs. A good specialist can help you with the right supplements or hormone replacement therapy for better sleep, more well-being and hence better looks. Also: drinking less alcohol – might not sound fun, but it’s true.

Your latest product line combats hair loss and thinning hair. Both seem to be a widespread problem that has nothing to do with aging… What’s a surprising factor that influences hair thinning?
Due to the launch I recently had the opportunity to speak to a lot of journalists from all over the world and was surprised to hear how many young women wore buns while they were also complaining about thinning hair. Also, many suffer from hair loss related to cosmetic products. Shampoos with silicones that dry out and suffocate the scalp or products with alcohol. These choices have consequences.
So what causes thinning hair?
There are different causes: stress, nutrition, hormones, environmental pollution. Genetic factors also play a role. Over time,
the productivity of hair follicle cells decreases, often due to an excess of the DHT hormone, which can lead to hair loss. Our products aim to specifically combat this hormone, promote scalp microcirculation, and increase stem cell production. They provide a solution for all causes.
How did you come to this formula?
I have been working on the ingredients for several years... In the end, I wanted a balanced, modern formulation that covers as many issues as possible. By the way, it includes Indian Gooseberry, green tea, and Maca extract – natural ingredients and plant proteins that repair the hair and give it shine.
What advice did you give to the bun-wearing journalists besides using Leonor Greyl products?

This brand new Copenhagen-based fragrance brand has a botanical masterpiece in its name and history-based knowledge (and magic!) in its formulations. 10/10 would recommend!
“Flora Danica” is more than a centuryold work: the original encyclopedia was commissioned by King Frederik V. in 1752 as a contribution to science and botany and to illustrate all the flowers and plants of his state – which at the time also included Norway, Iceland, Schleswig, and Holstein. After 122 years, the reign of 6 kings, and 3200 detailed illustrations, the entire work was completed with 54 books.
The influence of this encyclopedia is still hard to grasp. More than just science or art, “Flora Danica” has shaped Danish aesthetics on a thorough level: in 1790, King Christian VII. ordered the matching porcelain service with plant motifs from Royal Copenhagen (delivered in 1802),
which is still produced today and is considered one of the most exclusive decors worldwide.
Fast forward to the 21st century: “Flora Danica” now also gets a sensual interpretation. The fragrance house with the same name was founded in the fall of 2022 with the historical heritage as its main source of inspiration. The result? Eau de Parfums that embody modern Danish values and reflect the diverse facets of nature. The lineup includes four different compositions, all ready to be mixed and matched with each other: “1761” recalls the year of the first book of the encyclopedia, while “Flower Muse” takes you into the fresh Nordic air and

What was your first scent souvenir?
My first memory of fragrances comes from my grandmother who lived in Korea. We visited her there every summer, and I remember she always sat at her dressing table, took care of her skin, and then at the very end sprayed on a Chanel fragrance. That was my first encounter with fragrances.
How did you become aware of PHLUR, a brand that was originally founded in Austin in 2015?
I got to know PHLUR a few years ago and fell in love with Améline – one of the brand’s original best-sellers. In 2021, I got the opportunity to acquire PHLUR and take the company to its next phase.
What was your vision?
I wanted to give perfumes a new perspective through stories because we all know how a specific scent can instantly connect us
with a particular memory. PHLUR is inspired by these moments and emotions – I want the world to experience our fragrances through this lens.
PHLUR is very diverse thanks to you working with different perfumers. How is a fragrance developed? The process can be very personal, so it all starts with a fragrance briefing to provide a general direction, including emotions. This can be a fragrance category for starters but also a specific trend or story to inspire the perfumers. These are then interpreted and refined until it fits.
PHLUR in two words?
Modern and intentional.
What is your personal favorite fragrance?
Missing Person – it was launched two years ago, and I am always thrilled by it, it is very nostalgic for me.
Do you have a perfume wardrobe?
Definitely – perfume is the ultimate accessory for a look or a mood that I feel situationally. When I want to feel strong and sexy, I wear Father Figure. When I want to feel feminine and flirtatious, I go for Amber Haze!

Welcome to our myth-busting series! Does SPF cause vitamin D deficiency? Do I really need sunscreen with SPF 100? Dr. Eveline Urselmann, a specialist in aesthetic medicine in Hamburg, weighs in on what’s true and what you’re allowed to press the delete button on.
SPF 100 IS THE NEW HOLY GRAIL.
I don’t believe that SPF 100 is necessary. SPF 30 already blocks 97 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 50 adds only one further percent, and SPF 100 another one. However, I consider SPF 100 sensible after certain treatments (especially laser treatments) to optimally protect the skin.
ONE MUST AVOID THE SUN
AFTER HYALURONIC ACID (FILLER) INJECTIONS.
That is correct. The injection always causes irritation in the skin, creating the possibility of hyperpigmentation at the injection site. Therefore, I always recommend a safety interval of two weeks.

This really depends on an individual. I generally advise against laser treatments during that time, as they make the skin more sensitive to light and can cause new pigmentation. People there just need to be extremely cautious with SPF – and consistently avoid the sun.

The reasons for the decline in life expectancy are as diverse as the excuses for skipping the gym. They range from an unbalanced diet and lack of exercise to stress as well as alcohol and tobacco consumption. These factors promote chronic diseases such as cardiovascular illness and diabetes, which can significantly shorten life expectancy.
Which foods promote longevity and health?
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Fats from high-quality sources such as olive oil and fish are also important. The more colorful the plate, the better.
Is sugar a no-go?
Well, sugar has a proinflammatory effect on our bodies, promotes weight gain, and increases the risk of various diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, and certain types of cancer. It can also lead to insulin resistance, affecting metabolism and accelerating the aging process. Let that sink in: sugar makes you age!
So, poor nutrition also promotes (skin) aging?
Certainly, but besides that nutrition, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, and inadequate sun protection also play a role. All these factors can cause oxidative damage and inflammation in the body, breaking down collagen and elastin and causing wrinkles to appear faster than an origami artist under time pressure.
Fasting has now turned into a trend but is also supported by good study results. Can fasting increase lifespan?
Fasting, especially intermittent fasting, can increase lifespan by
promoting processes like autophagy, where cells break down and recycle damaged components. Studies even suggest that fasting can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve brain health, potentially contributing to increased longevity. The fact is: every living being in the world lives longer when eating less.
What is your take on dietary supplements?
As long as they’re based on scientific research and the quality is good, I am in favor of them.
How about your expert tip to reduce stress?
Use physiological sigh-breathing: start with a deep inhale through the nose, followed by another short inhale to get a bit more air into the lungs. Now exhale slowly through the mouth... This technique calms the nervous system and promotes relaxation.
If you could give the entire humanity only ONE valuable piece of advice, what would it be?
Live your life in a way that your 80-year-old self wants to give you a high five. Be kind, move, laugh a lot, eat colorful food, and love life. Because at the end of the day, it’s the only thing we have. (KK)
