ACADEMIC WORK

1.1 WATERLOO WEST SOCCER FIELD PAVILLION

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Waterloo West Soccer Field Pavillion is my first year second term Architectural Engineering Studio Final Project. The focal point of this project was to design a pavillion with a purpose anywhere in Waterloo Park in Ontario, Canada. As a group of 4 we took a walk through the park and selected a property in need of an entertainment, shelter and recreational area for two existing small soccer fields. The pavillion is designed to operate and be in use in the spring, summer and fall seasons.

01 CONSTRAINTS & SOLUTIONS

LOUNGE: This beautiful location lacks shade and seating for players and spectators. Due to the lack of shade and shelter on the property, there is no location for players and spectators to lounge before, between and after games or during full day soccer tournaments.

SHELTER: The location lacks shelter from rain or other weather conditions.

ENTERTAINMENT / SAFTEY: When tournaments are hosted, there is no location to keep teams not playing out of the sun which is unsafe, especially for young children. There is also currently no place for spectators to watch the soccer games as existing bleachers are rotted, not stable and not welcoming.

SOLUTION: Therefore, the West Soccer Fields are in need of a soccer themed pavilion for spectators and players not playing to view the field, lounge, stay protected and entertained. The property is very close to parking and accessible by park trails, and the pavilion will feature a viewing area, lounge platform, shade, shelter and most importantly make the space more alive. When soccer games are not played the pavilion has a multi-purpose design and can be used to perform concerts and plays as the pavilion has a stage like design. Once the project is complete, Waterloo Park will have a beautiful and vibrant soccer field, place for entertainment and shelter with the addition of the new pavilion.

Our proposed pavilion will be located behind the two small soccer fields’ nets. If the fields are converted into one larger soccer field, the pavilion will be located on the side, out of risk of acting as a target behind the net. The property is very close to parking and will be accessible by newly made park trails. The pavilion features a viewing area with abundant seating, shade and shelter. The pavilion has a multi-purpose design so that it can be used for concerts or plays when games are not being played. With the addition of our new pavilion, Waterloo Park will have a beautiful and lively soccer field and area for both entertainment and much needed shelter.

Using hexagonal shapes inspired by the soccer ball, and an open-concept cantilever shelter, a new design direction was established. Having a large open side created by the cantilever effectively creates an unobstructed view for those watching the soccer games. Using structural ribs to support the hexagonal roof/covering is practical while still providing the desired geometric aesthetic. Replacing some of the wooden hexagons with glass allows filtered natural light to penetrate the seating area while also providing a view of the surroundings in all directions, including the sky and dense trees behind.

1.2 TRI-FI

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Tri-Fi is a cell tower inspired structure which contains multiple different load paths and connections to hold a 65 g chrome steel ball approximately 500 mm above the designated surface. The structure combines the compression from majority of the wooden members and the tension from the string and the remaining wooden members to withstand a load without causing buckling. The Tri-Fi utilizes the stability and strength of triangles as well; when the load is applied to the meeting point of two members in the triangle, it is distributed along the sides of the triangle causing two members to be in compression and one to be in tension. As seen in Figure 1 and 2, the load path is displayed and the members acting in compression (blue arrows) or in tension (red arrows) are labelled. The Tri-Fi members are joined together with fixed connections to limit moments and bending. The Tri-Fi has two main sections, the top for distributing the load from the mesh platform to the center and the bottom for distributing the load from the center fixed connection to the base.

For the top section, when the load is placed on the mesh platform, the structure transfers the load from the mesh platform in which the strings are in tension

Three main structural members start at the sides of the mesh platform and meet at the central point. For the bottom section of the structure, the same three main structural members act in compression while the supporting inner members act as bracing. The inner bracing is designed to prevent the main structural members from sliding away from the center and keeps the structure from collapsing.

The Golden Night is my first year Architectural Engineering Studio

Final Project. The focal point of this project was to design a stand-alone cabin that allowed a busy student to escape their homes or traditional dormitories to increase productivity and induce relaxation. Collaboratively, we designed this spring, summer and fall functional generator powered cabin to be located in the backyard home of a residence in Markham, Ontario.

COMFORT: The Covid-19 pandemic forced families and student to work from home resulting in overcrowded and improper work spaces

SOLUTION: Loft desk features creates an isolated workspace for individuals to escape to increase productivity

WELLNESS: The Covid-19 pandemic challenged individual’s work/life balance due to interconnecting environments within living in isolation

SOLUTION: The Cabin space features an entertainment space bar design, loft workspace to increase productivity and resting area on the main floor to induce relaxation

PRODUCTIVITY: The Covid-19 Pandemic challenged individuals concentration due to the fact of working at home in an environment typically dedicated to relaxation

SOLUTION: This Cabin located very close to one’s home in the backyard of a residence contains a loft workspace focusing on living a balanced lifestyle.

The cabin sits in the open grass area in the northwest part of the backyard. The cabin faces the south and has windows on the south facade to increase the amount of natural lighting.

SUN ANALYSIS

A sun study was conducted in order to orientate the windows and bar. From the morning to the afternoon the sunlight shifts from front facing light on south elevation to creating more shade over the deck and bar into the afternoon for a cooler evening space to relax.

The cabin space is divided between productivity with a desk on the loft, comfort on the bottom floor with a custom pull out couch and an entertaining bar.

The cabin sits on the top right corner of the deck. On the main floor, there is a pull out couch, TV and high counter with storage to serve the bar.

On the loft, there is a wall mounted desk and chair with a railing behind that follows safety regulations, and the south window in front allows for direct sunlight into the loft from the south.

The front of the cabin is south facing. A grey sheet of metal cladding for the entire exterior, black and bronze/ gold framing was chosen for the windows, and a black door with a long handle to go with the industrial theme was chosen.

1.4 THE BASEMENT MANCAVE

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

My Grade 12 Interior Design Class final project was to work with a client to convert an unfinished basement into their dream industrial and modern man cave.

01 EXISTING SITE IMAGES

The basement was to include a recreation room for his older children to watch sports games and a lounge with a pool table and poker table to create an entertainment area for guests.

The design process began from scratch. The client provided a rough floor plan sketch of the space. I requested many images and videos of the space to estimate and identify design, existing infrastructure and construction concerns.

The site images and rough floor plan sketch the client provided allowed to create a floor plan to scale the space using AutoCAD. This floor plan incorporates existing infrastructure to build around.

This floor plan was critical in furniture selection and creating a 3-D model of the space.

Once the floor plan of the space was completed, the design process began with gathering colour swatches and precedents that best interest the client. These recreation room design boards display my interior design ability as I navigated through design styles, themes and colours that best interest the client.

Through multiple design meetings with the client and providing many options to select, I decided to create a 3D Model of the space using Google Sketch-up to bring the space to reality and create a visual to help the client design their dream basement.

In my first year of Architectural Engineering at the University of Waterloo, this was my first project in order to understand fundamental principles and skills in creating construction documents and drawing sets.

The task was to select an object no larger than 8.5” x 11” and draw the object at 1:1 ratio in plan, section, elevation and a view of our choice to determine how to draw a 3D object in 2D in a clear manner.

I selected this stapler because the round edges and exposed operating mechanisms challenged me to draw the object.

INTERNSHIPS

As a Project Design Coordinator at Graziani + Corazza Architects Inc., I worked on a design team to revise section and elevation drawings, design components of high-rise structures, make material decisions, create technical drawings to convey concepts and 3D model a high-rise structure. This is a large project, designed and constructed in 2 phases. The site contains 2 towers and a podium on the north and south elevation. I began working on this project in the design phase and revisions were very detailed and large scaled that resulted in taking on the project of redrawing the elevations. It was also my responsibility to build the 3D-model from scratch and develop my own technical concept drawings. In addition, I was also responsible for revising and improving the section drawings.

Project drawings were created without ramps and I was responsible for selecting the best ramp location on the underground floor plan in order for ramps to be in a good location that allows for an efficient roundabout for a drop-off and pick-up, entry to the loading zones and to the underground parking on the ground floor. MODEL LIVING:

Model Living is a start-up company which provides excellent customer service, high quality interior design and a stress-free construction process designed to simplify home renovations.

Model Living acts as a one stop shop for home renovations.

Model living specializes in using a newly developed website to provide clients with instant project estimates.

MODEL LIVING ACTION PLAN TO MAKE RENOVATIONS SIMPLAR & SMOOTHER:

DISCOVER / PLAN:: DESIGN PROCUREMENT & CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS

Entails onsite visits completed by certified engineers and sales team to refine project estimates.

Interior designers work with clients in selecting from product catalogues in virtual meetings to simplify project supply selections and project design. High quality renderings of the designs are created prior to the ordering of items by an external company.

Full product procurement, product inspection and warehouse storage of products is completed prior to construction by the Model Living warehouse team. Construction drawings are created for contractors to complete the construction process.

Construction process is completed by a contractor which model living selects is most suitable for the project from their network of contractors.

MY ROLE:

At Model Living, I worked alongside Engineers and Architects to create architectural construction drawings of interior renovations using Revit and AutoCAD.

On a day to day basis I was responsible for creating bathroom and kitchen renovation drawings.

I began a project by using the project scope developed by a team of engineers, on-site inspectors and the sales department to develop everything that my drawings must communicate to the contractor completing the construction process.

Then I use design spreadsheets which contain a list of project items that I import or build in Revit.

The drawings I create are to scale elevation and plan drawings of the project.

Drawings are always printed on 11” x 17” paper and used on-site to lead the construction process.

In the process of creating these architectural drawings I use my interior design and architectural knowledge to design functional interior living spaces and I source products through curated design catalogues for clients to choose from and import them to the drawings to bring their dream living space to reality.

Creating kitchen build guides are more complex because of the custom cabinetry, appliances requirements and project considerations. Kitchens drawings range from 5-6 pages.

The following project was a full kitchen renovation for a house in Toronto, Ontario.

3.2 DIGITAL MODELING & 3-D RENDERING

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

In high school, I began to tailor my studies to reflect my interests and passion for architecture and engineering. I am very passionate about designing interior and exterior living spaces and I decided to study interior design in Grade 11 and 12. The following two projects display my knowledge of 3D rendering, digital modelling and interior design.

This master bedroom, bathroom and walk in closet was 3-D modelled using Sketch-up.

02 MASTER BEDROOOM:

The client wanted to renovate their master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet and I designed their dream makeover. The client was looking for a warm and dark cosy look with a little bit of “flare.” I focused on selecting colours and furniture to create a contemporary themed design.

Due to the orientation of the room, it was very difficult to determine a space to have a TV with a proper viewing angle from the bed. I decided to design a custom furniture unit with a retractable television at the edge of the bed.

A custom built walk-in closet was designed to provide extra clothing storage requested by the client made out of MDF wood.
