SNK Building Design Studio | Fall 2012 | Instructor: Steve Hardy Location Lincoln, Nebraska Project Question How can prefabrication be integrated into urban highrise developments? Project Description The SNK Building was an exploration of prototypical urban massing and building systems. In groups of three, the basics of garage, retail and residential programmatic grids were explored through massing and prefabricated constraints. Once the basics were understood, the massing were hybridized and implemented in the existing fabric of Lincoln, Nebraska. From the initial prototyping, the focus fell upon the development of the prefabricated housing units and became a collaboration with three interior design students. The final process in the development, was the visualization within the urban fabric on a previously vacant lot located south of The Gold’s Building at 10th and N Street.

Prairie Pines Education Center Design Studio | Spring 2013 | Instructor: Tim Hemsath Location Lincoln, Nebraska Project Question How can the threshold between the built and natural environment be expressed through architecture? Project Description The Prairie Pines Education Center was an exploration of the architectural connection to the environment and its impact. The term threshold was used to understand the point at which architecture begins and ends. The Prairie Pines Education Center was composed of two portions. The first part was the group master planning of 140 acres followed by individual development of the main education center and the trail systems. The master plan was devised along two types of paths. One hardscaped path that served as a hard definition of the built environment and a second softscaped trail that served as a natural path. The main education center was located at the first crossroads of the two trails and directly tied to the hardscaped path while smaller pavilions were developed at minor crossroads where untouched prairie remained and where a wetland development was planned.

Shifting Skies Skyscraper Design Studio | Fall + Spring 2014 / 2015 | Instructor: Steve Hardy Location Chicago, Illinois Project Question How can natural lighting be improved in tall skyscrapers? Project Description The Shifting Skies Skyscraper started as an examination of office typologies and the morphologies associated with them. The initial precedent and programmatic studies were conducted as a class where atria and daylighting became the focus of this project. After the initial studies were conducted, it shifted to individual ideations meant to mix efficiencies of the different morphologies. One issued observed was interior lighting withing the depths of tower offices. From this, the initial prototype for the Shifting Skies Skyscraper was generated. It took the idea of the sky lobby and shifted it across floors based upon the angles of the sun. The core was displaced allow maximize natural lighting while the egress stepped along the sky atria with the implementation of an inclinator for ADA access.

Uniplex Housing Model Master’s Thesis | Fall + Spring 2015 / 2016 | Advisor: Steve Hardy Location Anywhere Project Question Is it possible to anticipate the social and technological needs of the next generation while incorporating the ideals of single family housing and challenging the segregation the suburbs created? Project Description Through examining the history of suburban housing, the AIA Home Design Trends Surveys, and generational changes, the Uniplex Housing Model attempted to anticipate the social and technological needs while incorporating the ideals of single family housing and challenging the segregation the suburbs have created. The Uniplex Housing Model anticipated the reduction of the automobile in its initial phases while creating a flexible floor plan to incorporate multi-tenancies, entrancement of an aging population and a movement towards a live-work condition. As well, the Uniplex Housing Model developed a flexibility prototype that is able to exist as an infill as well as a new build development.

Triangulated Tessellation Window Shading Digital Fabrication | Spring 2015 | Instructor: Tim Hemsath Location Lincoln, Nebraska Project Question How can secondary structures be used to diffuse light in existing and proposed architecture? Project Description The triangulated Tessellation Window shading was an exploration of the use of secondary structure as a way to diffuse light and reduce solar gain. The constraints of the installation were based upon the mullion grid of The Link at Architecture Hall at UNL. The thin paper membrane was generated through a Grasshopper plug-in for Rhino named Kangaroo that created fold lines on a flat surface that was transfered to the material through laser cutters. The substructure was generated to allow the facade to be pinned at the concaved points along the facade and was laser cut from basswood to provide a rigid but light surface.

Can You See Me Cow? Digital Fabrication | Spring 2015 | Instructor: Brian Kelly Location Omaha, Nebraska Project Question Through the manipulation of patterns, how is one able to distort ones perception of their location in a space? Project Description Can You See Me Cow? was an exploration of the techniques of razzle dazzle, a camouflage technique commonly employed by the military and automobile industries. Working in a group of six, multiple iterations were examined before settling on a chevron line work where an image could be articulated. The cow was chosen as the image because it was the symbol for the 2016 Big Omaha conference. Further manipulation of space was created through the incorporation of ponchos with the same pattern. This not only enhance the effect of the distortion but allowed for interaction with the installation. Can You See Me Cow? was installed and on display at the Kaneko in the Old Market in Omaha from May 04, 2016 to May 06, 2016.

Photography Outside Activities Location Lincoln, Nebraska | Denver, Colorado Project Description Photography has been an interest of mine since high school. Through UNL I have been able to further my understanding and appreciation of the art. Photography has developed my understanding of architecture in the way we present our work and how people operate within. Most of my photographic work has focused on building and machine elements, details and time.
