Century Market Thesis Project 5th year thesis studio

Within the context of Downtown Wichita, Century Market will reimagine the role and identity of architecture for the future of Wichita. Beginning with an expanded view of the district, materiality is primarily masonry brick and limestone. As the nature of this program is to shape the future of Wichita in a productive manner, it is imperative Century Market embodies the surrounding context, but with a design that is both sensible and innovative in comparison to the area. The design’s contextual sensibility relies on a material palette consisting of steel, limestone, and light. The simple material palette is portrayed in the key building elements which consist of large masonry walls, glazing, and a roof plane. Through the use of simple building materials and elements, Century Market acts as an example for the architectural potential of Downtown while still maintaining a hold on Wichita’s history.

Downtown Wichita Masterplan This master-plan will aim to turn the city block into the new “backyard” for Wichita. Century Park will host many of the city’s festivals and events, as well as provide a safe environment for families and citizens to enjoy the downtown area any time of the week. A key factor to the site’s development will be the removal of a portion of English Street and replacing it with a pedestrian mall. In context to the entire district of Downtown Wichita, Century Park will be at the Western end of English Street and the Intrust Bank Arena will be at the eastern end of the street. This will create a main entertainment corridor within Downtown Wichita, and generate the constant activity which has alluded Downtown for decades.

Tectonics Tectonically, the market’s roof system is the critical detail when relating the market to the overall park master-plan. One of the design features to the building’s roof is its intention to blur the lines between the interior and exterior, therefore intensifying the relationship between the park and market. The exterior space adjacent to building connects to the larger axis in the park to connect the Downtown area with the Riverwalk. The roof enclosure consists of three layers: the topmost layer being an array of louvres, below the louvers an ETFE roof system, and lastly a fabric layer to help diffuse light and dampen sound. The layering provides the ability for the large walls to read as the main structural element and allow the roof to have a light presence between the walls. Another detail which will further enhance the presence of the masonry walls will be the implementation of moveable filigree walls as the enclosure between the interior and exterior. Through the use of large sliding glazed doors, the filigree walls will be drawn up during mild weather.

The cross laminated timber (CLT) frames are carved to a single view for the user to look out through, simplifying their thoughts and allowing a clear state of mind. Simplicity is themed throughout the design from the form all the way down to the details. The basic form allows for the hut to be placed anywhere throughout the Ozolini property so to give users as many different experiences as possible and truly experience the Latvian landscape.

tesseract

Tesseract

5th year thesis studio fabrication project in collaboration with J. Reed Strawn A tesseract is defined as a four-dimensional analogue of a cube and is often described as the movement of a threedimensional cube through space-time. The cube is ever changing and never ending. The goal of this studio is to design for the future of Wichita - a future that is ever changing and never ending such as the tesseract. This system was designed to be dynamic and adjust to whatever application it may need to fill in the future plans for Wichita. As inspiration we looked towards designer and inventor: Buckminster Fuller. The late Fuller was renowned for his ability to to generate complex patterns, which culminate to become architectural elements that define space. Whether used as a canopy or wall screen system, Tesseract has the ability to adapt and provide a creative solution as an architectural intervention to the streetscape of Wichita.

kansas city film institute

Kansas City Film Institute Kansas City, MO 4th year comprehensive studio

The newly proposed Kansas City Film Institute, located in the Crossroads District, will be home to students and faculty pursuing their ambitions in the film industry. One of the main goals of the design is bringing back the prominence of Kansas City architecture. Materiality was carefully chosen for this design as it would tie the building to its context. The heavy brick facade draws from the history of brick architecture in Kansas City, while the glazed facade looks ahead to the current state of architectural trends. In order to bring a cohesiveness to the building site with its context a large overhead canopy spans the site, extending the building’s presence out to the side walk. This canopy creates an outdoor room for students to enjoy the outdoors, and allows space for the school to interact with public. Overall this proposed design will bring prominence and solidarity to the community in the Crossroads Arts District by the exemplifying architectural methods of Kansas City and creating a strong bond between the public and institution.

Community Space One of the main issues in downtown Kansas city is a lack of community space, as the city is riddled with parking lots. The design aims to encourage interaction between the public and film school via community spaces which will activate the street corner as well as the alleyway.

Polarity Use of heavy and light is apparent in this design through the use of glass and brick. This change in materiality gives helps denote the difference in public and private spaces within the building.

diagramming and design development drawings

Canopy Design The main design feature of the film school is the canopy which envolopes the site and building. As a space defining element, the canopy will provide shading for the exterior spaces as well as for the buildng itself.

Parti When all three conceptual ideas are combined, a parti arises describing a simple buildng which defines space and encourages inhabitation of the exterior.

The Canopy As the main design feature of the Kanas City Film Institute, the canopy acts as a space defining element as well as a shading device. From a materiality standpoint the canopy is made of a weathering steel grate which can age with grace and fit into the industrial context of the Crossroads district.

The construction of the canopy is fairly straight forward. A steel superstructure spans the site, and provides stability for the steel grate as well as an organizing system on the site. Main columns in the superstructure break down the site into sections where the relationships between the building and exterior space, materiality and public versus private are defined.
