Outdoor Bronze and Ranger Awards:
Additional Opportunities:
GSR’s Venturing program puts all the tools a Venturer needs in one place, all summer long. The program is designed to challenge Venturers at all levels, and new Venturers can expect to complete requirements for the Outdoor Bronze Award in a two week stay. Crews cook meals in their campsites, facilitating the Cooking requirement for the Outdoor Bronze award, and there are many exciting excursions and trips Venturing Gold Award candidates can organize for their Crews.
With a little prep work at home (for Emergency Preparedness), a Venturuer has the opportunity to complete all eight of the core Outdoor Bronze/Ranger Award. Requirements can be completed at GSR and eight of the electives - Watercraft/Aquatics requires a Water Safety Organization but is otherwise completely achievable. Camp Lenhok’sin opens up four more, bringing the total number available to 12 of the 18 electives.
• Mile Swim - a better experience in open water! • BSA Lifeguard • Boy Scout advancement requirements for Venturers working on Eagle • Training Courses including Safe Swim Defense, Swimming Rescue, Paddle Safely, ILSC and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training
More experienced Crews may want to spend a week backpacking at GSR’s High Adventure Base - Camp Lenhok’sin - or have a whitewater experience on the James River, go spelunking or experience outdoor living history.
Gold Award: GSR’s Venturing Program meets the requirement for participation in a Councillevel Venturing activity. By planning ahead with your Advisor, the Personal Challenges for Requirement 5 are within reach. Planning a week at GSR for your crew can fulfill Requirement 6.
Silver Award: All of the tools for the Venturing Silver Award are available at GSR, including: - American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certification - no additional charge! - Take BSA Safe Swim Defense and lead a water based activity for your crew on beautiful Lake Merriweather. - Complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) at GSR’s Camp Bowman. - Organize ethical seminars and discuss ethical controversies with Venturers from all across the Northeast Region.
Planning: The first time Crews attend GSR, they should plan for at least a two week experience in consecutive weeks. If two consecutive weeks are not possible, nonconsecutive weeks can work almost as well. More than two weeks are also possible, a Crew might want to attend Camp Bowman for two weeks, earn the Outdoor Bronze Award, then move to Camp Lenhok’sin for a Philmont style backpacking, caving or whitewater experience. Crews with lots of Venturing experiences may want to go directly to Camp Lenhok’sin for some real high adventure activities. GSR borders the Goshen Wildlife Management Area and the North Mountain Wildlife Management Area so hundreds of square miles are open for off reservation backpacking, hiking and camping - the views are breath taking and the Scoutcraft is intense! Some advanced program at Lenhok’sin take two weeks to complete (Cycling/Mountain Biking and Backpacking). The NCAC Program Staff will be happy to help you customize your GSR experience.
