SOME OF THE AMAZING ART WORK OF STUDENTS OF CLEVELAND STREET INTENSIVE ENGLISH

HIGH SCHOOL

TERM 3 2015!



HERE HOME AWAY FASHION DESIGN SPECIAL TOTEM OBJECT PORTRAITS STILL LIFE PATTERNS ON LIBRARY CHAIRS! BANKSIA PATTERNS PERSPECTIVE LANDSCAPES X-RAY KANGAROOS! SKIPPING! ELECTIVE!


HOME HERE HOME AWAY Students were asked to select two images: one from Australia and the other being from the country or part of the world from where they came from. The two images then had to be juxtaposed (or mixed together) to show the land of their old home and the land of their new one. Thus these students in their minds were connecting to both worlds. Along the way the students learnt about the idea of appropriation which means to borrow. The borrowed image is given a new meaning by the artist. To represent Australia the Sydney Opera House was a popular choice!






























FASHION DESIGN Students were asked to use a natural design (from nature) and a geometric design (mostly human made) by colouring them with warm colours for one and cool colours for the other. The students then had to do a final design overlapping both of them. The final pattern obtained from this procedure became the basis of their amazing painted fashion design! ____________________________________________________________________

SPECIAL TOTEM OBJECT Students were told of the Aboriginal idea of the totem which is about how a special object or animal is very important and well respected. For example, a black snake may never be killed as it is believed by the tribe it is the totem of the ancestral spirit that made their land in the Dreamtime. (The Dreamtime or Creation time is when the world and everything in it including animals, plants and people were made). Students were asked what was a special object to them; and to then show it using common Aboriginal designs and colours.





















PORTRAITS Students were shown how to draw a face and to their surprise they were then asked to draw their own faces (known as self-portraits). Their selfportraits were then applied in different ways to do a larger picture. Some students had to put themselves in a landscape so as to also learn about perspective. Some students used the fashion designs to finish off their self-portraits or they preferred to be shown proudly wearing their school uniforms. While others relied on ancient icons with a few even becoming angels! Of course some students did not want to do self-portraits and so they did other excellent portraits!





































STILL LIFE Students did either a colour exercise with available stencil outline drawings of a still life or they had the chance to do an ink brush still life which they later painted. Some pleasing results either way especially showing their knowledge of warm and cool colours. The main warm colours are red, yellow and orange. The main cool colours are blue, green and purple.

Perspective Drawings Students coloured these perspective landscapes with pencils which give an excellent painterly effect when water was added to the colour. Other students achieved landscapes with black lines using ink. While other students simply worked with pencil.
