CURRICULUM VITAE

Nicholas Widjaja Intro Architecture is always about a mix of art and science which I personally fond of both. As a person adaptability and the love for new challenges are essentials, but as a designer consistency and accuracy are substantial.

Being in a love hate relationship with design because sometimes it is not all about our desire to express but for the one(s) we are designing for instead.

The best designers though will always be capable of balancing all which is why constant desire in improving self to perfection is a must.

Architecture Mindset Maximizing sites and materials potential like Frank Lloyd Wright Expressing beautifully the capability of structures like Santiago Calatrava Exploring modern technology and sustainability like Norman Foster Manipulating spaces and human senses like Peter Zumthor Utilizing natural light and emptiness like Tadao Ando Down to earth like Kengo Kuma

Architecture should speak of its time and place but yearn for timelessness as said by Frank Owen Gehry

Kaneshiro the Teppanyaki Restaurant Commercial - Freelance Project Rumah Makan Handayani is a well-known Indonesian restaurant in Surabaya especially back in the 90s. But as time flies changes are needed, so as new generation took over with new concept and ideas. Nowadays most Surabaya customers came from millenials and office workers, japanese cuisines are deemed the best to attract them. This asimetric new facade look desires to abandon the old look of the unchanged Handayani layout, but still giving new atmosphere and feel of a new restaurant.

Petra Christian University New Campus Faculty of Medical, Nursing, Pyschology, and Pharmacy Competition Entry Located on a 1 hectare open land area where students from the university know as the cars parking ground. The institution decided that the vast area is ideal for the new faculty expansion. Implementing eco-friendly environment design with dynamic and flexible study space is ideal for a university with millenial students nowadays.

7

Though one must inherit the unique personality of Petra Christian University which is shared with other older buildings for this design. Derived from the concept of welcoming all kinds of people and transforming the society for the better based on christian value. The main purpose and goal of the building concept is to emit the sense that it is giving aid and a warm welcome to those in need.

Military Tourism Gallery of Surabaya, Indonesia Bachelor of Architecture - Final Semester Project To recap our 4 years of undergraduate journey, a final design thesis shall be made. A personal experience in a military bootcamp that I had really give me moments to remember. Like a melted iron forged into a sharp and strong steel, part of my personality was made there.

E’sprit de Corps “Jiwa Korsa” is known as the social attitude of soldiers in war. A spirit where you are bonded with other soldiers professionally towards the same goal. Where as soldiers have to act like ‘robots’ by executing the commands they are issued with, this bond can maintain their true identity since they are sharing the same experience. And so this bond can make the soldiers even endure the turmoil of war. The 20 meter cantilevered and also sloped facade of the gallery represents the sustaining spirit of indonesian soldiers.

Surabaya City Tourism Gallery Bachelor of Architecture - 6th Semester Project My architecture mindset started become so philosophical because of this semester’s project. Fiddling with symbolic architecture, the project themed around designing a tourism landmark that represents the city. What tourists would like to see should be what only exist in the Surabaya city.

21

Surabaya’s tangible urban elements are unique landscapes, diverse locality, and immense amount of historical heritages. And as time goes on, the historical values transforms into memories and intangible spirit of places. Extracting characters from the urban elements would be depicted as manmade blocked shapes with local materials. Meanwhile the characters from spirits of places would be depicted as a curvy/natural shapes with vertical repetitive lines and somewhat translucent. Juxtaposing these two would be what I imagine to be the architecture symbol of the city.

WORK IN PROGRESS (TO BE CONTINUED) As it has been almost 2 years since graduation, this architecture career path still so young and there are still so much to learn. But one thing for sure, designing not for self but for the sake of others and environment is the key to make a change in the world as an architect.
