In order to address the research problem of Eigg’s sustainable balance, three varying scales of question regarding Eigg have been proposed across the collaboration. The island scale, the grid scale and the housing scale all contribute towards quantifying the energy balance of Eigg. Through researching these particular energy scales, a greater understanding into the island itself and where its performance requires improvement can be established.

Through the utilization of the island’s local timber resource, we seek to provoke discussion around the social, practical and economic impacts of constructing with locally sourced building materials in remote rural contexts
Core + Democratic Space
Interchangeable functions Our designs interrogate polyvalence and democratic layouts to maximise flexibility between spaces and functions.

The design represents an envelope of interchangeable components built on a modular grid system surrounding Modern Croft a central element. The house formation takes inspiration from traditional crofts and incorporates possible small scale food production within its site.
