NIC KASPEREEN

NIC KASPEREEN Born in Riverside, California, Nic S. Kaspereen moved to San Francisco in 2009, a beloved city to their family, known for its amazing food/eateries, art culture, and home of the San Francisco Giants. The culture and socio-political climate of the Greater Bay Area afforded Kaspereen opportunities and experiences not found in Southern California. At the age of 30, Kaspereen left their job in customer service at a large grocery chain to pursue their dream of earning a bachelor’s degree. Initially beginning their education at a local community college with an interest in Environmental Studies, their focus landed on sustainability and green building. Under the guidance of two supportive professors, Kaspereen, an avid painter and self-taught artist, was encouraged to deepen their studies to include both sustainable design and the arts. Kaspereen found this combination through San Jose State University’s Interior Design program, where, over the past four years, has worked to connect, learn, and grow with peers and professors. Identified as an environmentally conscious designer, Kaspereen was awarded an internship at Hawley Peterson Snyder Architecture and Interior Design firm in Sunnyvale. Since their time with HPS, Kaspereen has worked alongside colleagues at the firm in providing conscious design. Kaspereen’s commitment and passion toward sustainable products and design through HPS projects, allowed them the opportunity to co-create a grant proposal which HPS was later granted (ONEder grant; One Workplace) in 2019. This innovation grant was awarded to three of fifteen participating firms in the Greater Bay Area. The grant entitled: “Designing for the Future - Interior Life Cycle Analysis” is scheduled for a One Workplace webinar May 27th 2020 and will be published as a White Paper. Looking forward, Kaspereen will seek out firms that share their vision of sustainability and ingenuity through aspects of all future projects.

Our House is located in Portland, OR, one of the most beautiful cities where nature meets urban sprawl creating an inviting playground where Mother Earth, humans and animals can thrive. The Design Challenge was to create a space that mimics the enchanting scenery of Oregon. Inspiration for Our House was birthed from city parks, buildings, and lush gardens creating a sanctuary of urban comfort. The balance of the indoor and outdoor space mimics the harmony and peace in the “City of Roses .

OUR HOUSE

CONCEPT The concept came easily to me because I have a love and passion for Portland and the environment. There is so much to pull from just walking around the city streets or taking a bike ride along the Willamette River.

FLOORPLAN This urban, two-level home design was intended to engage both natural and urban landscapes. Our House seeks to grow with the dwellers as it is encapsulated by a lush, natural landscape. The industrial elements of the brick and block structure bring in aspects of the urban landscape while the outdoor green space acts as a sanctuary amidst the city life in the background. The green, living roof sought to capture all weather elements to create an ecology of its own to replace what had been taken from the earth. Each level of Our House has its uniqueness in design and function, an element that is seen throughout the entire home. The first floor provides most of the outdoor space and features one of the two master suites. The second floor also has a master suite with an area that would serve as an office or additional living room. The bottom floor allows the owners to live fully downstairs and enjoy all the key features of the home without limitations.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Twitch is a successful social media and gaming company that seeks to create community through a virtual platform. Their philosophy is for consumers to fully immerse themselves into an imaginative world of myriad pixels allowing for consumers to both game and watch one another through their seamless streaming function. Promotion of positivity and connection is central to the values of the company. The office mirrors an unexplored internal landscape which allows people to work in both communal and isolated environments for maximum potential. The biophillic design of this tenant improvement represents a workplace that promotes a creativity, community and connection.

OUR WORK

CONCEPT Twitch is a large, global company that seeks to think outside of the box. Hand-rendered concept design sketches birthed the direction of this project. The visuals represented are intended to create a virtual space that mirrors the landscape of a video game or an “out of this world effect. Elements of biophilia were considered in the design to bring the outside in, allowing life from nature to grow within the space. The green, lush aspects of the natural world were incorporated in the color palette choice. Minerals and crystals were an inspiration to this project, in particular, amethyst, the brand color of the company. Taking from the theme of nature, the typography of the design showcases the differing levels and aspects of the design landscape that can serve as pockets of space that staff can utilize for quiet, secluded workspaces.

WHERE REALITY MEETS SPACE

GAMEROOM

In 2018, the quaint, Northern California town of Paradise experienced a devastating fire that devastated most of its territory, shattering the lives of its inhabitants in a matter of hours. Since then, the community is not only working to rebuild its infrastructures, but also the livelihood of people who have chosen Paradise as their forever home. Our Health serves not only as a medical center, but was constructed as an attempt to connect a community that has been impacted by a significant loss. The structure sits amidst lush green-space and rolling hills seeking to instill new life for the town’s inhabitants. When constructing on land that is peppered with toxic soil, it is necessary to excavate the existing detritus and allow for a new eco system to emerge (roof top). The steel frame of the structure provides a visual, functioning work of art that serves as a symbol of resilience, rising from the shadows of much darker days. The triangular form of the structure resembles the mountains in the backdrop of this pristine community. The lavish green-space above and around the structure, including vertical gardens, allow for temperatures to decrease in and around the building, affording native wildlife to thrive. Adjacent to a community park, Our Health is dedicated to the safety and wellness of its’ patients, staff and planet. In addition to the services provided to patients, a restaurant and lounge provide gathering spaces that reinforce the multiuse function and economic potential for local shop keepers that are working to rebuild their small businesses.
