My pain(ngs provide a vision of, and stem from, an interest in our not-‐so-‐perfect world. I find beauty in the imperfect; the worn, the scarred and the weary. I take inspira(on from the mul(-‐layered graffi( and poster-‐clad walls of our city streets and the characters that inhabit them. I am par(cularly interested in those individuals who appear beset by hardship, fear or indifference. My most recent pain(ngs deal directly with the idea of des(tu(on, homelessness and displacement, and the chaos and solitude that it brings. My animal pain(ngs consider a different aspect of urban life, that created by man's insa(able appe(te to devour our green-‐belt habitats and replace them with sprawling housing developments. In these pain(ngs it is the animal, for example the fox or the owl which, having been displaced from its natural habitat, now shares our towns and ci(es. I am comfortable with both figura(ve and abstract styles, and whether I am pain(ng human or animal my characters exist within a mul(-‐layered environment of blurs, streaks and rivulets of oil paint, interspersed with printed text, familiar paDerns and occasionally gold leaf. The way I create a pain(ng can be tremendously chao(c at first with paint thrown and poured onto the canvas then areas scraped or sanded back. Text is added then virtually obliterated before being added again. Only then do I focus my aDen(on on the main subject of the pain(ng. Kate & Nick Bentley are very pleased to hold a solo show of the works of Julie Vernon over the month of July. Recent visitors will have seen a few examples of her work in the galleries, all of which have received rich praise and many remarks. We, both, place a very high value on her work, approach and finish and exemplary. Whilst not all the subjects will be to everyone's tastes, we applaud this, the skills involved in the crea(on of each piece are worthy of note.
