MYSELF I AM AN ACTIVE AND ENERGETIC PERSON WHO PRIDES HIMSELF IN BEING ATTENTIVE. I LOVE THE OUTDOORS AND EXPERIENCING ALL THAT I CAN. MY LOVE FOR SPORTS, MUSIC, AND ART KEEPS MY VIEWS ON DESIGN OPEN AND CONSTANTLY EVOLVING. I AM FORTUNATE THAT I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY MANY THINGS AND SEE MANY PLACES AND THESE EXPERIENCES HAVE GIVEN ME A KNOWLEDGE THAT CANNOT BE REPLICATED IN A CLASSROOM. THESE LESSONS HAVE TAUGHT ME THAT IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE END BUT HOW YOU GET THERE AND MY INTERESTS IN ARCHITECTURE FOCUS ON THE PROCESS AND WHAT THERE IS TO LEARN FROM IT. I BELIEVE THAT ARCHITECTURE SHOULD NOT LOSE ITS CONNECTION WITH FORMAL EXPERIENCE. IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE SUSTAINABLE NO ONLY ENVIORNMENTALLY BUT ALSO CULTURALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY. TECHNOLOGY IS VERY POWERFUL AND HAS CONCIEVED STRUCTURES WHICH WHERE PREVIOUSLY UNIMAGINABLE BUT MY INTERESTS ARE STILL CRITICAL OF THE OUTCOME IN REALITY.I DON’T BELIEVE THAT DESIGN COMES FROM A COMPUTER, IT COMES FROM THE DESIGNER AND AS A DESIGNER, MY PROCESS STILL FOCUSES ON DRAWING AND MAKING. THERE IS MORE DISCOVERY IN THE PROCESS AND DECISION MAKING THAN THERE IS IN A FINAL CONSTRUCTION AND I’M A PROFESSIONAL READY TO CONTRIBUTE MY SKILLS.

Steel framing is the main material and method for framing in the Wolf House. The Wolf House is in Chile, which makes steel framing a better choice over wood framing because of the seismic activity in the area. Steel framing is made up of cast iron with a specific percentage of carbon. Cast Iron typically has about 3 to 4 percent carbon, but too much carbon makes the metal too brittle and weak 1. Structural steel usually contains less than three-tenths of 1 percent carbon along with traces of detrimental impurities such as phosphorus, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen, and beneficial elements such as manganese and silicon.2 A basic oxygen process is used to manufacture steel from iron by blowing oxygen at very high pressure from a water-cooled lance into the metal which is molten iron and recycled steel scrap.3 The pressurized air burns excess material out of the mixture which can then have other impurities added

to make stronger and then be cast into desired beam shapes.4 In the Wolf House, steel frame works in the same way that wood frame would work except it is more economical to use steel in this design.5 The three main bays that the steel is easily capable of spanning would require large, thick timber members if it were to be made of wood. The frame would be much heavier and more susceptible to fail in seismic activity. 6

Exploded Axon 1 1/2”=1’

The assembly of the steel frame was managed by a small team of carpenters and welders.7 The three main bays were constructed first and then the rest of the frame was constructed off them. Construction followed the process of moving a member into place by means of a group of people lifting each member and then one person bolting or welding the member to the rest of the frame with a web. The Wolf House is made up of large steel members that have steel studs and joists set within for the

Climate Design Priorities 1. Keep heat in and cold temperatures out in the winter. 2. Protect from the cold winter winds. 3. Let the winter sun in. 4. Keep hot temperatures out during the summer. 5. Protect from the summer sun. 6. Use natural ventilation for summer cooling. Comparable to climate zone #3. Less fenestration and more insulation on winter windward side and more fenestration on south side for winter sun. Use shading device that blocks high angled summer sun out and allows low angled winter sun in.

CS#3 - ENVELOPE TRANSMISSION & INFILTRATION Thermal Envelope Overview The House in Dazaifu is a few compact volumes nestled into the side of a hill. The North and South North Facade West façade South Facade facades have very little glazing allowing very little direct light in. The East and West facades of the main East Facade volume of the house have a large percentage of glazing with large walls of windows. A lot of morning light is let in directly through the East façade through the large window wall. The West façade is well hidden behind the volume in the back along with being sunk down into the hill and surrounded by trees allowing day lighting in. In the design, there are several skylights placed to focus light on specific elements of the interior. These skylights allows direct light into the spaces but since the house is not at the equator, the light hits the white wall interior and reflects into other spaces as day lighting. Mediaescape IN THE DIGITAL AGE, BOOKS ARE BECOMING OBSOLETE AND ALONG WITH IT THE LIBRARY. THE LIBRARY TYPOLOGY IS EVOLVING FROM A PLACE OF INTIMATE STUDY TO A HUB FOR CONGREGATION.
