25th Anniversary

T

he year was 1982 – do you remember what the world was talking

about? ET was number one at the ER[ RIÂżFH 0LFKDHO -DFNVRQÂśV Âľ7KULOOHUÂś DOEXP GRPLQDWHG radios, Dallas and 60 minutes topped on TV, Princess *UDFH RI 0RQDFR GLHG 3ULQFH William was born, Liposuction ZDV LQWURGXFHG DQG WKH ÂżUVW DUWLÂżFLDO KHDUW WUDQVSODQW WRRN place. Closer to home, some interesting questions were being asked. What if Sydney &LW\ DQG 6W 5LWDÂśV ZHUH MRLQHG to form a larger, hospital that would serve all of Cape Breton? What if there were more health care services here instead of in Halifax? What would it take?

25 years later, we know what it took. It took community support, government lobbying, and money. It took the vision and leadership of some incredible people – who called themselves the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. 25 years ago, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital was only a thought. Today, it is the centre of our healthcare in Cape Breton, treating more than 100,000 cases each year

– keeping loved ones close to family in times of need and in WLPHV RI MR\ To date, together we have raised more than $10 million and made a real difference in the lives of many who depend on the hospital. As we celebrate our 25th year as a foundation we are more committed than ever on enhancing patient care and services at the Regional Hospital.

Cape Breton Beverages – Major Gift 7KH ¿UVW JLIW WKH +RVSLWDO )RXQGDWLRQ HYHU UHFHLYHG ZDV from Cape Breton Beverages in 1991. Since that time they have continued to be leaders in community giving. In September, Cape Breton Beverages Limited together with Trans-Atlantic Preforms Limited announced they will SOHGJH RYHU WKH QH[W ¿YH \HDUV WR VXSSRUW WKH programs of the Foundation.

“Cape Breton Beverages and Trans-Atlantic Preforms are proud of this partnership with the Foundation,� comments Andre Cote, president of Cape Breton Beverages and Trans-Atlantic Preforms. “We understand the important role the hospital plays in our community and we are committed to making a positive and lasting impact.�


Grateful Patient

T

ravis was 11 months old when a fever and broken blood vessels made his SDUHQWV 0DWWKHZ DQG /LQGD take him to the emergency room at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. That day Travis was diagnosed with leukemia and ÂżYH GD\V ODWHU DIWHU UHFHLYLQJ KLV ÂżUVW ERQH PDUURZ ELRSV\ Travis was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). 7UDYLV VWDUWHG WUHDWPHQW LQ 0D\ 2001. At the time, Travis was the youngest person to receive treatment at the Cancer Centre. “Travis had amazing support,â€? says Linda, “all three pediatricians were wonderful; however, Dr Bird was amazing. He is an exceptional person. He involved the whole family LQ 7UDYLVÂś WUHDWPHQW ZKLFK ZDV extremely important. His sister Rebecca, who is one and a half years older than Travis, held his hand through every procedure.â€? Because of all that he has been through, Travis is wise beyond his seven years. “Travis has been through more in his seven years then most people have

LQ WKHLU OLIHWLPH ´ VD\V 0DWWKHZ Travis stopped treatments LQ -XO\ DQG LV QRZ LQ remission. He continues to have yearly check-ups and is proud to say, “I had cancer and am beating it.â€? As young as Travis is, he realizes the importance of the Cancer Centre. “Raising money for cancer gives people the medication they need to get better,â€? says Travis.

In celebration of the 25 for 25 Lottery Early Bird Draw, Travis drops the puck at the Screaming Eagles game on October 6th.

Your Support Changes Lives

undraising events and activities held by the Foundation and members of our community allow The Regional Hospital to continue to be a place where patient care saves and changes lives. Here are a few of the many events held in our community over the past few months:

Grade two students at Coxheath Elementary School decorate their 300 lb pumpkin.

The Great Pumpkin Penny Drive - Four local schools held penny drives in October to raise money for the pediatrics Fairways Fore Healthcare department. Over $2,500 was WHDPV SDUWLFLSDWHG LQ collected and each participating WKH ,QYHVWRUÂśV *URXS WK school received a 150- 300lb Annual Golf Tournament in pumpkin to kick off the penny September. The tournament ZDV D IXQ ÂżOOHG GD\ DQG UDLVHG drive and thank them for $30,000 towards the purchase their efforts and support. The Fiddlers Run - The Fiddlers Run took place on October 27, and 28th with funds raised from the event being directed to the Cancer Centre upgrade and expansion. Runners and walkers of all ages participated in this action packed weekend.
