The unique technique of kite fishing is a skill used by fishermen in Las Flores, Colombia to fish in unrreachable e wate ers by boat. The e fishermen are able to fish from standing at the shore. The fishermen stand at the mouth of the Magdalena River and d take their catch to the e fish market the next day. The kites are made out of bla ack garbage bags and bamboo. The fish herman perfo orate the e material to o con ntrol the e kite’s stablitiy in the wind. At night, the black kites reflect the light of the moon, defining the ed dge of Las Flores alon ng the e riverr.

During our trip, we noticed problems we wanted to add dress tho orugh h ourr inte erve entio on and were insp pired by the social culture of Las Flore es. We crea ate markkers th hroug ghout the e city he people. The pod d is a kinetic struccturre, that will functtion as a canopy and a lantern for th inspired by in nformal city interventions by archite ects such as Teddyy Cruz an nd th he soccial impact that ca able net structures by Frei Otto have on the massses. The studio studied an nd analyzed the Nolli map in effo orts to reorganize e the e site e at one e of th he hissto oricc gates of Rome, Porta Portese. We divided the site into o smaller siites. Ou ur foccus was on Via Portu uensse. ng. Th he program m called d fo or car The city of Rome wanted to rearrange the street forr tour bus parkin parking for the emplo oyees in the area and wider sid dewalks fo or the pedestria ans. We use ed Roman n motifs to order the se ections of the street. The centerr of the street is divid ded into tw wo drivvin ng la aness with Roman mosaics as each lane and the written story of the e fall off the Rom man Em mpire e actiing ass the street divider. Eve ery Sunday, the street is closed to o all cars and busses as th he site acccom mmodattess the Porta Portese Flea a Market. The mosaic on the stre eet turns in nto a walkw way for pedestria anss so th hat they can experience the images and the story as they rummag ge throu ugh the markket.

Given a narrow site fo or a single family, live-work home, I decid ded to expllore e Jap pane ese architecture to study how w the house can appear largerr through design n deccisio ons. To o in ncorp porrate e a connection to the natural environment, I was insp pired by a serie es of fold ds stem mmin ng frrom origami-like architecture e. I sketched and constructed study mo odels with organicc fo orm ms. When I was set on a form, th he design developed where e the folds became a tooll fo or im mpo orttantt relationships of design, such as a separation betwe een interior and exxterio or, the e diviision n off space, sustainability, circculation, and the surrounding g views.

Th he purpose of the project was to design an intermoda al center for buses, seap plane es, an nd water taxis for the slip next to the Ame erican Airline es Arena.. I saw w the progrram as an n opportunity to design a water piazza, engaging the public and being the cen nterr of transportation for the downtown area. A hydropow wer syste em wo orks throug gh the sta airs, taking water from the bay and storring it in a po ool at the e front of th he slip. The wa ater levels communicate to the visitor whether it iss a high tide or low w tide e. The syystem powers the buildings on the site. A low pedesstrian brid dge co onnects th he site wh hile also engaging with the visitor with th he water activvities and d provviding g a ba ase forr the e buildings across Biscayne Blvd.

ACTIVE HYDRO POWER SYSTEM Water is diverted from the bay to a channel that delivers the water to a turbine. The moving water rotates the wheel which spins a shaĹŒ, which then powers a generator. The generator distributes electricity through power lines connected to the buildings on the site.

We ana alyzzed d the culture of Miami with h a focus on the architecture that stemmed frrom the Art De eco o Movement. The design is inspired by the linear lang guage and d bold colo ors of worrkss by Luis Barragán. The café incorporates a large foun ntain to amplify the noisse of the e ocean nearby. A yellow cage provides shade to the roo of deck an nd inco orporratess co olorr to o celebrate the vibrant cultture of Miami Beach.

For a fish market to perform every day functionss, it was imporrtant for us to o pllan a site that focuses on hygiene. Inspire ed by the Qu uerini Sta ampalia byy Carlo Sca arpa a, channels run through the site to quickly wash off the grround throu ugho out the dayy. The stalls are designed like crates liftted a few incches off the gro ound. Poo ols at eithe er end of the site store waste from the channels until the end d of th he da ay. Th he struccturre terminates in the water. Sculptural fe eatures throu ughout the site engage e the e visito or with the water on site and with the river. The roo of structu ure mimics the sca aless of a fish.

The studio focused on exploring the architecturral identity of Coral Gables. We worked clossely with the ciity’s Office of Historicc Presserva atio on to survey and document the architecture of Phineas Paist, the architect responsible for realizing Geo orge Merrrick’s dream m of “T The Citty Beautiful” in Coral Gables. We mapped the loccations and the density of Phineas Paist’s civic and resid dential con ntributions to o the city y.
