COMETA URBANA LAS FLORES, COLOMBIA The Cometa Urbana will control the impact of informal gathering in public space. After visiting Las FLores, we were inspired by the way people move and gather throughout the city. During our trip, we noticed problems we wanted to address thorugh our intervention and were inspired by the social culture of Las Flores. Our proposal is to create markers throughout the city that will function as a canopy and a lantern for the people. The pod is a kinetic structure, inspired by informal city interventions by architects such as Teddy Cruz and the social impact that cable net structures by Frei Otto have on the masses. Shade and light from our pods will activate sites throughout the city and create a greater sense of community for the people of Las Flores.

NYCHA, CUT THE CORNERS BROWNSVILLE, NY

rocka

People in Brownsville have a negative perception of their neighborhood and they do not interact with their extended neighbors. Our goal is to create interactions between different groups of people and change theirRD opinion of their OA BILLB neighborhood. A critical point of interaction is at an intersection. The RE collision depends on how level STOof the corners are activated. Corners DESKin Brownsville are underutilized and inactive. NYCHA turns its back on the corners. PLUG-The intervention IN compliments the existing amenities of Brownsville. The residents’ wants and needs are a place to meet, enjoy, gain and buy. The result is short term and long term interventions that will allow for change to be just around the corner.

LOCAL MATTER[S] NEWBURGH, NEW YORK

PUBLIC ENTRY

The goal of Local Matter[s] is to revive the local economy of materials in the Hudson Valley and provide social mobility through job training to people affected by disparities in the region. We jump start this process by focusing on Newburgh. Newburgh becomes a destination for innovation and technology of materials, through its decaying historic fabric and its place in the construction and materials trades in past centuries. Local Matter[s] will provide jobs and skills using research, innovation and education. This new system will link materials sources, processing sites, historic districts, and building supply stores with educational and training workshops, in the form a new Materials Lab. The Materials Lab is the place where locals become experts on materials and is the resource of knowledge for the Hudson Valley.

PORTA PORTESE WALL WALK ROME, ITALY The studio studied and analyzed the Nolli map in efforts to reorganize the site at one of the historic gates of Rome, Porta Portese. We divided the site into smaller sites. Our focus was on Via Portuense. The city of Rome wanted to rearrange the street for tour bus parking. The program called for car parking for the employees in the area and wider sidewalks for the pedestrians. We used Roman motifs to order the sections of the street. The center of the street is divided into two driving lanes with Roman mosaics as each lane and the written story of the fall of the Roman Empire acting as the street divider. Every Sunday, the street is closed to all cars and buses as the site accommodates the Porta Portese Flea Market. The mosaic on the street turns into a walkway for pedestrians so that they can experience the images and the story as they rummage through the market.

MIAMI BEACH CAFE MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA The project relates to the Bass Museum of Art as well as the beach behind it. We designed the the café to be surrounded bya gallery walls for exhibitions. We analyzed the culture of Miami with a focus on the architecture that stemmed from the Art Deco Movement. The design is inspired by the linear language and bold colors of works by Luis Barragán. The café incorporates a large fountain to amplify the noise of the ocean nearby. A yellow cage provides shade to the roof deck and incorporates color to celebrate the vibrant culture of Miami Beach.

MIAMI INTERMODAL DOWNTOWN MIAMI, FLORIDA The purpose of the project was to design an intermodal center for buses, seaplanes, and water taxis for the slip next to the American Airlines Arena. I saw the program as an opportunity to design a water piazza, engaging the public and being the center of transportation for the downtown area. A hydropower system works through the stairs, taking water from the bay and storing it in a pool at the front of the slip. The water levels communicate to the visitor whether it is a high tide or low tide. The system powers the buildings on the site. A low pedestrian bridge connects the site while also engaging with the visitor with the water activities and providing a base for the buildings across Biscayne Blvd.

MIAMI FISH MARKET MIAMI, FLORIDA For a fish market to perform every day functions, it was important for us to plan a site that focuses on hygiene. Inspired by the Querini Stampalia by Carlo Scarpa, channels run through the site to quickly wash off the ground throughout the day. The stalls are designed like crates lifted a few inches off the ground. Pools at either end of the site store waste from the channels until the end of the day. The structure terminates in the water. Sculptural features throughout the site engage the visitor with the water on site and with the river. The roof structure mimics the scales of a fish. NICKI GITLIN nickigitlin@gmail.com
