Crisis Communication A visual history of BP’s use of public relations after the Deepwater Horizon accident.

Nick Lovegrove

Crisis Communication In April 2010, a BP-operated well caused an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 people and saw 4.9m barrels of oil leak into the Gulf of Mexico. Initially BP downplayed the incident; its CEO Tony Hayward calling the amount of oil and dispersant “relatively tiny” in comparison with the “very big ocean”. Over the coming months, Hayward notoriously continued to make a number of PR ‘gaffes’ ranging from announcing that “nobody wanted this to end as much as i do” to being spotted sailing on his yacht. In July 2010, Hayward quit his job. Viewed by many as a deliberate scapegoat for the accident, he stayed in his role until the worst of the disaster was over. This book documents BP’s PR response to the incident, documenting every press release from BP’s Press Centre that is tagged with the term ‘Gulf of Mexico response’ the start of April 2010 to August 2012. Each page represents one week and all images are placed at the date at which they were made publicly available. As an accompaniment, black and white images show the reality of events, rather the over-saturated, colour-coded ‘official’ images. The book also acts as reflection on the breadth of the modern PR industry. Even though the bulk of this activity comes under the banner of ‘crisis communications’ every ‘stakeholder’ is targeted – from investors to politicians, from BP’s consumers to potential tourists across the US.

The main public-facing tools have been the extensive use of TV commercials and sponsorship. A huge variety of TV adverts ranging from a ‘non-apology apology’ by Hayward (estimated to have cost $50 million* alone) to the promotion of the BP sponsored ‘Team USA’ in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. To date, the accident is thought to have cost BP $38bn. Over two years later, despite this colossal PR campaign, its shares are worth 35% less than they were at the start of April 2010.

Emeril's Three New Orleans Restaurants Serve Up Even More Gulf Fresh Seafood As This Weekend's Daily Specials Highlight Gulf's Bounty NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- New Orleans restaurateur Chef Emeril Lagasse and his New Orleans area restaurants are proudly participating in the Gulf Coast Seafood & Tourism Bash sponsored by BP - a two-week celebration of Gulf Coast seafood and tourism tied to New Orleans hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl and Allstate BCS National Championship. Lagasse, an avid Gulf fisherman, has been cooking up several Gulf seafood inspired tailgating recipes with players and sports enthusiasts this week and will continue to in the coming pre-game action around the BCS National Championship on Monday, Jan. 9. From Saffron-Chili Dusted Jumbo Shrimp to Truffled Gulf Shrimp "Louis" and Etouffee of Daily Market Gulf Fish, Gulf seafood remains a top selling dish at Lagasse's restaurants. On Thursday, Jan. 5 his three New Orleans restaurants: Emeril's, NOLA & Emeril's Delmonico – began kicking up their daily specials to celebrate the Gulf's abundant seafood offerings. The specials will run through Sunday, Jan. 15 and feature Gulf white shrimp, Louisiana oysters, swordfish, mahi mahi and lemon fish, blue crabs and fresh local crabmeat. Last month alone Lagasse's three New Orleans restaurants served 2,600 pounds of barbecue shrimp made with fresh Louisiana shrimp, and over 1,000 pounds of drum. "I'm proud to be a part of this effort to continue to raise awareness about New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast as we host two major college football games, not to mention a New Orleans Saints playoff game," said Chef Emeril Lagasse. "When you choose Gulf Coast seafood you're supporting the traditions, lifestyles and rich food culture that we all know and love. Gulf seafood has always been a cornerstone of my restaurants' menus and a big part of my recreational life. It's a great time to celebrate this beautiful region." In addition to the 140,000 people with tickets to the games, it is estimated that another 150,000 fans will come to New Orleans to cheer on their teams, while millions more will watch the games on television. The Bash includes Gulf Coast seafood at official Allstate Sugar Bowl and Allstate BCS National Championship galas and pregame parties; promotional announcements during the games; vacation giveaways to Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana; seafood samplings for fans and media in New Orleans, and more. BP America is committed to being a partner in the communities where we live, work and do business. Over the years, BP has provided millions of dollars to national and local educational and community organizations. BP volunteers (employees and retirees) also engage in community activities and efforts where they live. BP’s Fabric of America Fund program is a tangible way for US employees to engage personally and make a difference in their communities. Under the program, employees in communities across the country can request that BP America make a contribution to a nonprofit organization. The donation will be made on the employee’s behalf and does not require a matching contribution from the employee. The BP Foundation oversees a matching funds program for employees who make contributions of money, gifts and time to charitable organizations. In addition to financial support from BP America and the BP Foundation, our employees actively volunteer their time and talents to support community organizations and schools in their hometowns. The annual BP MS150 bike tour, which has raised millions of dollars to battle multiple sclerosis, is the largest organized charity cycling event in the nation. BP is committed to having a workforce that reflects the diversity of the United States. Diversity is not an end in itself, but a step toward making our business truly a global meritocracy. BP’s retiree corps spans the range of BP and its heritage companies. A group whose members have spent their working lives bringing energy to America and the world, the retiree corps is exceptionally valuable when it comes to informing policymakers of the importance of the energy industry to the US economy.

BP has been working with the people of the Gulf Coast for over a year to speed the recovery from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. So we, like many of you, are concerned about the misinterpretation of an Auburn University study of tarballs washing up on a number of beaches. Some have said the study suggests that residual oil represents an elevated risk to human health. Others say that the study indicates weathered oil is not degrading. Neither of these claims is accurate. 27 September 2011 BP expresses concerns about misinterpretation of Auburn University report on tar balls

In detail The definition of bribery is offering, promising, giving, receiving or soliciting anything of value in order to influence how someone carries out a public, commercial or legal duty. This includes attempts to do any of the above. Breaching anti-bribery and anti-corruption laws is a serious offence. Companies and individuals breaching these laws may be punished by fines, and individuals also face imprisonment. 0RVW FRXQWULHV KDYH ODZV SURKLELWLQJ bribery and corruption. These often cover actions carried out beyond the country’s borders – such as bribes paid to someone in another country. Everyone at BP must comply with these laws. "Spirit of the Gulf" to entertain Team USA with seafood, music during London 2012 Olympic Games As Team USA prepares to make the journey to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Gulf Coast’s finest are gearing up for a trip across the pond to deliver the ultimate good luck charm – Gulf Coast tastes and tunes. For four days during the 2012 Olympic Games, the ‘Spirit of the Gulf’ will introduce Team USA to a showcase of the Gulf Coast presented by BP. As part of the company’s ongoing partnership with the United States Olympic Committee, BP will host the “Spirit of the Gulf,” a series of events for Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games. More than 1,000 people each day will be encouraged to visit the Gulf Coast, sample the world’s freshest and best-tasting seafood and experience the Gulf’s unique culture and distinctive attractions. BP believes the London 2012 Olympic Games are the ultimate demonstration of human sporting endeavor, bringing together extraordinary athletes from around the world. BP believes that the Team USA athletes and the U.S. Olympic Movement embody the values that the company wishes to exemplify. BP also believes that success comes from working as one team – the athletes are supported by the energy of a number of people who help them to achieve their best. “BP’s support for the U.S. Olympic Movement in London demonstrates our commitment to operating in and contributing to the economic vitality of thousands of local communities across the globe,” said Crystal Ashby, BP’s executive vice president of Government and Public Affairs. “BP is proud to use the power of the London 2012 Olympic Games as another way to promote the Gulf Coast, draw new visitors to the region and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the community.” Eight of the best chefs from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are preparing the freshest seafood the Gulf has to offer for U.S. Olympians, their families and visitors to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Each chef will dish up some of their hometown favorites. The chefs include Chef John Folse (Louisiana), Chef Michael Sichel (Louisiana), Chef Chris Poplin (Mississippi), Chef Calvin Coleman (Mississippi), Chef Chris Sherrill (Alabama), Chef Alec Naman (Alabama), Chef Justin Timineri (Florida) and Chef Paul Stellato (Florida). With a taste of the Gulf’s seafood and a sampling of the sounds of the region, performed by three Gulf Coast bands, BP is bringing Gulf Coast hospitality to Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games. The ‘Spirit of the Gulf’ will use the best the Gulf Coast has to offer to cheer Team USA on to victory at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
