Programme: Greater London Authority Headquarters Location: St Peter’s Seminary, London This 5th year project started out with two main conflicting interests. Brutalism and Sustainablity. What happened next was an exploration of both, to see whether they could cohabitate, whether sustainable brutalism was acheivable and would the juxtaposition between the two create interesting results. An exploration of Brutalism was my starting point, the current state of Brutalism, its tropes and characteristics and could this be procedurally generated, this was an attempt to see if it was possible to take theses findings and apply them to sustainably. Next was an investigation into sustainable materials, during which I came to realise that finding the answer to all our problems with a miracle material was highly unlikely for a sole researcher such as myself. Perhaps instead I could design a project that would allow others to carry on the pursuit of creating more sustainable materials for the future. Thus NIMR or the National Institute of Material Research was born. By saving and adaptively reusing a brutalist relic, designing with brutalist tropes in mind. The project came to life.

The Political Circus

Programme: Greater London Authority Headquarters Location: Finsbury Circus, London Born from an interest in the layering of architecture in London and in particular long the rremaining roman walls, the project developed into a proposal for the new GLA headquarters. Reusing an existing building that formed the perimeter of Finsbury Circus Gardens. The centre piece of the project is a contoured public ramp that flows up through the building, providing a false sense of transparency to the proceedings of the GLA which have in the past been questioned. Whilst areas remain secretive and hidden for the GLA’s dodgey dealings to still occur. The ramp, made of glue laminated timber, was designed using contours based on the existing buildings grid. The ramp was then created by connecting the various contours together to form a political landscape within the political programme of the building.

The project was to re-develop the existing property. The extensive works included; Opening up and increasing the area of the ground floor for a kitchen, living, dining area. Creating a large master bedroom on the first floor, on top of the current ground floor roof, and replacing the remaining roof whilst adding a 4th bedroom as a loft. When I joined this project there were pre-planning concerns over the extent of the works and area increase being proposed. I was therefore tasked with complete a set of drawings and accompanying statistics showing that the proposed works increased the area within the house by no more than what was allowed through permitted develop and that our proposal was to a better standard overall. This was submitted as a part of our planning arguement and the planning application was in the end successful.

Practice: Zarya Arquitetos e Engenharia Programme: New Construction Location: Guara 2, Brasilia, Brazil Situated in a neighbourhood just outside Brasilia, this project was a complete new build following the demolition of the previous house. Debora, the client, expressed a desire for a cosy yet functional space that they could also use to entertain family and guests, on the restricted plot. The project took the overall volume of the plot before carving it into three main sections, the enternainment spaces seperated from the private spaces by the central circulation space.

All windows are situated to frame the view and bring all the focus to it. With a challenging steep and steep site, we at Zarya took this challenge and made it our own, adding an infinity pool for residents to relax, unwind, eat barbecue and enjoy the wonderful nature that surrounds them.

Girls of Steel

Practice: Zarya Arquitetos e Engenharia Programme: New Development/ Condominium Location: Barbados Whilst working at Zarya, we had the chance to work for a UN funded project called Girls of Steel. The premise was to empower women in Barbados by training them in the construction industry. Women hold an unfortunately high percent of unemployment on the island. The on site training would then also produce low cost living oppotunities for the women and people of Barbados in general. We were tasked with designing a low cost multiple phase housing type. That could expand easier with the family if and when needed. The logo was also designed by myself in coordination with the Girls of Steel director.
