Evolution Eyewear for Shooters Te st Re port

EVOLUTION EYEWEAR APPEARED on the market in 2007 and the compa ny no w o ffers va rious mo dels of sunglasses, safety a nd shootin g e y e w e a r. Magnum recently tested Evolution ’s Sw itch 4 eyewear.

The unisex style S w itch 4 p ackage come s w ith four inte rchangeable one-piece lens sets (spanning both eyes) in grey, yello w, orange and purple. Being polycarbonate, the lenses are impactresistant, shatterproof an d comply with the EN166 Europea n s tandard for protectiv e e ye wea r, carrying a class 1 rating, meaning suitable for continuous use. Th e lenses ha ve a h igh UV protection ra ting (UV400) and are rimless, offerin g u nobscured vision. The y a re lightweight , w it h s cratch-resistant coatings tha t h elp repel wa ter, o il and dust and limit fingerprint smudges. Ev oluti on states that th e s mok ycoloured (including grey) lenses reduce all light equally an d a re best for general wear in bright light and sunn y c onditions. Th e p ackage we recei ve d h ad smoky-coloured lenses with a b lue hue, and amber-coloured lenses giving yo ur surroundings a ‘wa rm ’ a ppearan ce and als o i ncreasing contrast – o bjects appear in sharper focus – w hi ch are suitabl e for most weather and light conditions. The ye llo w lenses enha nce light, provide high colour-contrast and are ideal fo r low light, low visibility and cloud y c onditions. The purple lenses are excellent for all-round use, dulling the brightnes s of o bjects and increasing contrast.

THE NOSE PADS are of s oft, nonslip rubber and fasten onto a hard-plastic clip attache d to the ‘bridge’ of the one-piece lens set. The arms are a ttached by means of ‘temple tips’ which fit onto the side s of

b y ANDRÉ GROBLER

the lens-set, and are of lightweight, durabl e p la sti c w ith a texture d s oft rubber strip making skin contact behind the ea rs.

THE LENS CASE in cludes a p rinted diagram showing how to switch lenses in two easy steps. To disassemble, hold the lens-set and pull off the temple tips by gentl y tugging them dow nw ards. Insert the sides of the chosen lens-set into th e s mall s lots in the fron t of the respectiv e t emple tips; apply light upward pressure and the two parts snap togethe r. An au dible ‘click ’ c onfirms they’re in place. Likewise with the nose piec e–a‘click ’ a ffirms tha t it is securely a ttached to the bridge section of the new lens-set. I w ore the smoke-coloured len ses as everyda y s unglasses for a couple of months. They were comfortable even wh en worn for long periods, and ga ve no discomfort w hen worn with electronic ea rmuffs during some length y s hooting ra nge sessions. The fit wa s s nug enough not to shift even when I fired rifles of significant recoil.

Used in conjunction with scopes, the lenses showe d no d istortions towards the edges when I turne d my h ead, nor did they hinder my vision even when shooting at distances up to 500m. The lenses fitted the contour of my face well and wrapped far enough around the sides of my orbital bones to giv e a dequate protection. On the ra nge, I m ostly used the ye llow an d a mb er lenses . T he ye llow lenses would be helpful at indoor shootin g range s for their light-enhancing ability. Obviously, n o lense s can be smudge free, but wa ter ra n o ff them leaving no marks. A s ingle shake g ot rid of smallish drops leaving the lens blemish-free during a rain y d ay on the ra nge.

TH E F OU R L EN SES com e i nah ard carry case with a s ponge reces s for each individual lens, a s oft pouch, cleanin g c loth and an assem bly p amphlet. Evolutio n a lso has an option to accommodate prescription len se s w ith protectiv e e ye we ar. Qualit y e ye wea r is s omething every shooter should tak e s eriously. Evolution shooting eyewear is purpose-made an d is to be recommended. I h av e s een the Sw itch 4 p ackage advertised onlin e in S outh Africa from about R700.
