A NEW VIEW NICK POULOS | INTERIOR DESIGNER
Design is a process; a never-ending cycle of thinking, planning, and generating new concepts and ideas. Design is powerful, it keeps the world moving forward. As designers, we recognize problems and find solutions, and the method through finding them is where design is so important. I’ve developed a design philosophy that is focused heavily on making everyday life easier for people, whether it is in the layout of the design, creating a functional wayfinding system, or designing an enviorment that people can feel comfortable in.
03 | A NEW VIEW
By analyzing flaws in current interiors, my work begins to combat the problems in these existing spaces by creating solutions through a combination of space planning and stunning aesthetics, making the space function in the best possible way.

Kids these days are not getting enough physical activity, leading to an increase in childhood obsetity and many health realted issuses. Although physical education in schools is getting some kids up and moving, more and more schools are cutting PE programs.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS How can we improve the health of youth in America as well as their futures, by offering sports and other activities?

What cities are leading in childhood obesity, and which of these cities could benefit from a sports + recreation complex?

PROJECT STATEMENT Along with tackling the issue of childhood obesity, I also look to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for people of all ages.
By taking a large factory building that is out of use, we are able to transform it in a way that accomodates many different sports, healthy activities, and physical therapy, as well as providing dining options and classes that may aid in helping people better their healt and lifestyles
25 | PROJECT STATEMENT
This project involves activities and areas for people of all ages and covers a large range of activities to give everyone a chance to change their life by finding something they love within the space.

PROGRAMMING
ICE RINK
Quantity | Minumum of 2 Function | Hockey has been a growing sport in America in the past few years and with that comes more teams, more games, and more tournaments. Having multiple rinks opens up the opportunity to host many games, tournaments, and showcases without running into scheduling errors. Having multiple rinks also allows for the opportunity to have a youth hockey organization make it their home rink with teams ranging from 6 year olds to 18 year olds. Organizations like this prefer rinks with multiple ice sheets as to help with practices and game scheduling.
SOCCER FIELDS
Quantity | Minumum of 2 Outdoors / 1 Indoors
30
Function | Soccer is an inexpensive option when getting your kid involved in sports; it also is a common sport in adult rec leagues. Incorporating not only outdoor fields but indoor fields as well provides an opportunity for year round soccer leagues for participants of all ages.
THE
PROGRAMS 1
BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL COURTS Quantity | Minumum of 8
Function | In terms of inexpenisve sports for kids and adults to get involved in, basketball and volleyball are both up at the top of the list. Basketball and volleyball are also leading sports in adult intramural/rec leagues. Providing many basketball courts that can also convert to volleyball courts is a great opportunity to hold leagues for all ages, as well as having courts left over for open practices and people who just want to play leisurely.
RACQUETBALL COURTS Quantity | Minumum of 3
31 | THE PROGRAMS
Function | Racquetball is a growing sport for adults. Many people enjoy playing before or after work hours, or even during lunch breaks. Providing racquetball courts brings in adults, which lead to more business as more parents discover the facility.
THE
PROGRAMS 2 BATTING CAGES
Quantity | Minumum of 6 Cages Function | Baseball is one of America’s greatest pastimes. However, while this space not be suitable for indoor baseball fields, adding a baseball/ softball training area and batting cages could bring in people of all ages; from kids looking to get in extra practice, to adults looking to let off steam and hit some balls. Batting cages are a fun and practical addition to the sports complex.
ARTIFICIAL TURF/TRAINING FIELD Quantity | Minumum of 1 Indoor/ 1 Outdoor
32 | THE PROGRAMS
Function | Artificial turf is a great option for training kids in all sports, be it football, soccer, frisbee, or any type of conditioning for sports such as hockey or baseball/softball. Adding artificial turf fields indoors and outdoors provides an option for year round uses and also requires much less maintenence than real grass. The biggest benefit from adding these fields is that that are multipurpose and can be used in many different ways.
FREE WEIGHT GYM Quantity | 1
Function | Classics can’t be ignored when it comes to a gym. One of the most popular uses of gyms around America is their free-weight areas. Adding a state of the art free weight gym can bring in a lot of business amongst the bodybuilding community as well as the people who just enjoy a simple workout with weights.
CROSS FIT GYM Quantity | 1
33
Function | Along with free weights one of the most common things you see now is the emergence of crossfit across America. A state of the art crossfit gym is a great opportunity to hold large crossfit classes and in turn bring in a lot of business. This also is a great option for parents who want to work out while their kids are at practices or other classes in the complex.
YOGA STUDIO Quantity | 1
Function | Another growing trend in the fitness world today is yoga. Adding a yoga studio would create growth in other areas of the complex. It also offers a good option for mother’s to enroll in, and as noted in an early section of this book, kids are twice as likely to be active if their mother is active.
MIXED-USE FITNESS CLASSROOM Quantity | Minumum of 4
Function | Also popular in gyms across the nation are fitness classes, be it, areobics, plyometrics or zumba. These classrooms will be used for many different classes and must be able to change equipment easily.
RUNNING TRACK Quantity | 1
34
Function | Many people love the simplicity of running. Whether it’s a warm up, full work out, or a cool down, an indoor running track is a great option for those while helping people avoid the unpredictable weather.
THE
PROGRAMS 3
FIGHT STUDIO Quantity | 1
Function | What better way to let off a little steam than hitting the bag. Boxing and MMA are becomming more and more popular and can be practiced at any age. A fighting studio offers a large dedicated place to permanetly house all of the equipment in a state of the art gym.
CYCLING STUDIO Quantity | 1
Function | Another classic and popular class in the fitness world is cycling. The cycling studio will be a dedicated space to lay out all the stationary bikes and will be used to host cycling classes. Athough it will only be one room it will have the option to divide and hold 2 classes at once.
CONCESSION BARS Function | Whether you need a snack during your child’s game, or before or after a work out, these concessions will offer healthy snack options, in an effort to help eliminate one of the leading factors in obesity.
35 | THE PROGRAMS
Quantity | Minumum of 4
THE
PROGRAMS 4 RESTAURANTS / BARS Quantity | 2-4
Function | The incorporation of restaurants and bars in the complex offer a great opportunity for parents to sit and spectate their child’s practice or game while grabbing a bite to eat.
PHYSICAL THERAPY CLINIC
Quantity | 1 Main Clinic - 3 on Field Rooms
36 | THE PROGRAMS
Function | Another key aspect to a healthy lifestyle is making sure you recover well. A physical therapy clinic on site allows for direct access to help with recovery and learn new ways to prevent injury. The on field rooms are a great way to provide access to people who get hurt during a game or practice that require immediate attention.
LOCKER ROOMS / BATHROOMS Quantity | TBD
Function | There should be multiple locker rooms and bathrooms placed in the proper areas of the complex. Locker rooms should be large and provide a way to secure any personal belongs.
OFFICES
Quantity | Minimum of 20
37
Function | An area of offices will be required for administration, coaches, and other employees of the complex.
