“ Can the metro system become an extension, instead of a detachment of life? ”

a3 Thesis

Although “Time is Money” is a very well-known proverb, it really tells how people persue time and money endlessly. Currency results from scarcity. We make currency as a vehicle of fair trade to judge all the commodities and services. I think time is kind of currency. However, It is fair but not equal. In recent year, the middle class in Taiwan is low on time but not money. We spend too much time on making money, but too less on enjoying life. “It’s weird that people have so many machine and inventions for saving time, but time we left can not be even less. ” -- A Geography of Time

a5 Thesis

2016

Taking the metro is an interesting thing. You can see lots of people transported like a frozen pork without any emotion. All the process is very thin. When you go through, then it is done. Taking the metro is a part of memories for most of people in Taipei. I wonder is that possible to make it as a volume of life?

Time is Money

a6 Thesis

Metro is a symbol of saving time and a kind of plug-in in the city. It makes people convenient to move, like an accelerator in the city. We really save lots of time. However, we go further by the time we saved. At last, peolple in the city move crazily.

a7 Site

My site is a unoccupied space located on the southern side of Zhongxiao Fuxing station. Zhongxiao Fuxing station is a joint development of MRT. In this station, there are two metro lines and a underground street leading to Zhongxiao Xinsheng station. There are lots of office buildings around this station, so it is a transfer station with the second large amount of passengers.

2016

Time is Money

a8 Program

When we take the metro, transfering is the only time that we will lose our sense of speed. We're forced to stay for a while. If we transfer by the EasyCard, we have to finish all the process in 2 hours. Under this condition, I think we can make the " two-hour transfering life". Everytime you transfering, you can decide how to spend your 2 hours.

a8 Program

I think what the MRT passengers need is not more and more coffee shop or fashion dress shop. The feelings come with the light music is not like an escape of urban but like an extension of life's battlefield. What we really need is somewhere we can stay without spending lots of money, somewhere could connect residents to the passengers. I try to set a urban park here.

When we mention "park", the first image go cross our mind may be somewhere with bright sunshine and green plants probably. However, the sun had already set after work. The plants become a background of park in the evening. Would we still stay around the trees, or we prefer the street light?

DAY

Time is Money

a14 Concept

The meaning of park should be more than nature and green. It is also an attitude to slow life and a desire of escaping from urban. However, most of nuclear family are busy in making money. Their life is somhow rapid, mechanical, and repeated like a task. Parks become the spaces you can go without any meaning and purposes after work. You cannot even tell it's a kind of life or not.

NIGHT

SECTION

I think staying is the way to resist rapid. I want to make the MRT passengers fisnish their daily work before they go home. According to parks and daily care centers are complementary in time, I try to combine these two programs. It will be a new posibility of metro life and urban park.

I think the night starts from the street lights turning on. It means that the nature light is replaced by the artifical light. I always feel like I were in a carnival in Taipei Eastern District. For a park, people might stay around the trees by day, but stay around the lights by night. I try to define the programs by the difference of light.

Original thoughts about energy pavilion ?

Sih-Min Jiang: I find that energy trans-formation is potential. "Armor blocks" is always an interesting stuff. People assem-ble lots of little unit to protect the wave. On the other hand, somehow it means that we change the geometry and then change the property as well.

Energy transformation

+ Yen-Chen Kuo: As a pavilion, the most interesting thing is how to make it relate to people. People could be a part of pavilion, even play the rule as independent variables. There might be some way to change the second layer, and the relationshop between these two layer will become very cool. And the most interesting thing is that the second layer will become the support, so you can print both two layers once.

Changeable double skin

+ Ke-Min Syue: I think energy is something never stop changing, and that's why "energy pavilion" sounds quit interesting. For me, I do like to creat a pavilion unstable and changeable. I think if I combine the pavilion with mechanical way or simply let it interactive with people. Then it could be very special and meaningful.

CNC CUT WOOD At first we try to find the frame structure with interesting fabrication way. After trying several different methods, we find that useing CNC to cut the wood sticks might be the best way for our project. Then we make our own grasshopper tool to simulte the hole system including cutting the wood and the way to assemble it, so thah we can figure out the embedded logic behind our process, also to understand the advantage and disadvantage of this new fabrication way. And making some rules to improve our process and make more realistic. The special characteristic of this fabrication way is that you can use CNC to cut whatever lines you want, but the cut can be assembled with another cut which has same angle. So the line you draw will have some limit if you want them can be assemble all together. In addition, it's hard to see whah you will get when you draw the lines, so if you want get the specific form, you might need to adjust the line several times. However you can enjoin to assemble them again and again to see how many possibility this simple unit can get.

ENERGY TRANSFORMATION

2015

Sensing the Unnoticeable We could easily feel the energy in the environment around us- the heat of the sun, the blow of a breeze or the vibration of a drum. But we often forget that we also release energy. We intend to make people notice the subtle interaction happening between us every moment.

WORKFLOW OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION A pavillion design by the public and YOU!

Join the event Join us, we need YOU ! The pavilion which gathers public creativity! We invites people to participate in the process of designing. The 10 sets of unique cutting path decided by you will be manufactured into 110 components by the CNC milling machine, and none of them will be identical. Participants get to decide where to put the next component on the site in sequence, each person will have a certain amont of time to choose the position for his/her components on site. Therefore the whole event is a progress of intergration and accumulation. The outcome will demonstrate the full potential of CNC fabrication method by combining all the randomly chosen path into a functional and esthetical structure.

Housing as a Consumer Product In a technological society, more people will play an active part in determing their own individual environment, in self-determining a way of life. We cannot expect to take this fundamental right out of their hands and go on treating them as culture and creative morons. We must tackle it from the other end in a positive way. The inherent qualities oriented society are those of repetition and standardization, but parts can be changeable or interchangeable depending on individual needs and preferences, and given a world market, could also be economically feasible.

Don't be nervous! It's easy. You just need to use you finger to play with our application. Then your idea will become a part of our pavilion! After the closing date, we will announce the order, and you can download our MeerKatŠ app online .Please log-in our app during your turn and design your own eleven sticks. The pavilion will be assembed at the Museum Gardens, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA from 04th February 2016 to 16th May 2016. You are very welcome to join the assembling process!

MEERKAT

MeerKatÂŽ is an userfriendly application specially designed for this event. It provide real-time simulation and interaction between participants. With this app you can also try to build your own pavilion at home. Enjoy !

In order to make sure what you cut could interlock with not only your own sticks, but also other people's, we're sorry to limit the cutting angle into three options, 15°, 30° and 45°. Modulated manufacturing is always easy and efficient production.

Final structure

Adjust the structure Region You have to build inside the 8mx10mx4m region

We might need to adjust the overall structure by removing the cantiliver or adding some supports.

Base structure The pre-fabricated wooden base would be assembled first to provide joints for timber components to attach. The lanscape like structure can stimulate people's imagination and has the potential to develope into interesting indoor or outdoor spaces. The contour form were decided by the surrounding plants and possible activity division.

Cantilever Considering the structural stability, there are limitations to the length of cantilever.

In this project, the site is near the West Market which is once a big-scale traditional market and had been thriving at the time. However, it declined after a unsucessful urban renewal. When I walked in the market, I found that there are lots of alleys. To my surprise, some of the alleys are leading to a courtyard inside the market.

I think the special experience of migrating in Tainan’s alleys makes them out of ordinary and facinating. And what I want to do is to imitate the special experience in the art foundation.

In my opinion, I think the process of an exhibition could be divide into four part. The first part is where you just reach, it depends on which transportation you choosed. The second part is the process before you enter the museum. The third part is the lobby that full of the imformation and some cues for the exhibition. And the last part is undoubtly the exhibition itself.

I choose the material as the wood the arcylic. The wood make it easyily to "hide" in the trees and the arcylic supply a chance for sun shine to come in, and you can see through it as well. I will use the CNC to cut all the slices of the wood and the arcylic prefabricated. Then I use the iron bars go through all the slices and use the screw to fix the slices from the top of them. By this way, I don't need to remove the tree, I can even put it inside this bus stop.

It is a method of architecture study - Fractal . Articulation The idea of this program's basemaps comes from a game, stair climbing. And the rule of the stairs isaccording to Pascal's triangle. Then I stack the cubes by the basemaps.

Space I use the basemap of the stair climbing to divide the floor into two parts nearby the central axis. I think the interlacing floor will make it interesting. Furthermore,I imagine that there is a group of angels living in the front of the building. Because they like the light space, the storeys are higher, the entrances are larger, and here is many windows, too. On the contrary, the other side where devils live is quite the reverse.

Narritives I set the site at the first student center in the Nation Cheng Kung University. It links to the Cheng Kung Hall used to hold meetings, lectures,or performances. What a contrast between them. Therefore, they are separated by bulkheads. It is this site's own characteristic, and it is tricky for me. I hope people can join the student's activities after meeting. They can hear music and the singing voice on one way concealed by the plants,as a veil. And the other way is leading to the static clubs. People can experience the clubs from the static one to the dynamic one.
