PER SONAL PR OFIL E I have graduated at the end of 2018 a Masters Degree in Architecture from Nelson Mandela university. In addition to the education gained in my studies for a BAS and M.Arch I have been exposed to a variety of study and work environments. I have grown as an individual and have not only gained a valuable education but have also developed essential inter-personal skills. My approach to work is personal and passionate taking on any task with tenacity, determination and commitment. I get excited about architecture which involves heritage, placemaking , culture and phenomonology. Having a natural curiosity in the making and workings of things has meant that I love to explore and experiment with the tactility of materials.

THEORETICAL

The sacred , meaning and culture

Humans have an innate psychological and emotional affinity to the sacred natural world, however with increasing urbanization nature and the natural world is under threat, presenting a situation which is likely to have physical and emotional consequences for society. This treatise grapples with issues pertaining to the interface between man and nature and its relation to the sacred. It examines how the architecture concerning a building type, the Sufi Lodge, found within traditional Islamic architecture can be translated into the 21st century to strengthen the sense of culture, meaning and spirituality for the Islamic Sufi community that exists within South Africa. The challenge is firmly rooted in notions of place making as well as this interface between man and nature. Emile Durkheim’s dichotomy of sacred and profane is used as a starting point to build a discussion around issues that come with the creation of sacred place in the artificial and natural. Architectures role in this, in its nature as a mediator between realms, is analysed, particularly focussing on Thomas Barrie’s principles of sacred place creation. These principles are then overlaid with the specific Islamic formal belief system to create an approach which embraces community, culture and the sensitivities of making in a natural landscape. In all the treatise sought to understand the principles in order to develop a proposal for an Islamic Sufi Lodge for the Islamic Sufi community in Cape Town South Africa. This facility looks to serve as a vessel for interactions within a greater social network creating a space for pilgrims and residents, allowing for ritual gathering and learning as well as providing a liminal place for solitude and deep spiritual connection to nature.

THEORETICAL

Meaning, culture, time and rehabilitation

The timber shed in Plett built in 1786 to store timber for shipping to Cape Town is an important relic of the past, representing the beginnings of a string of coastal towns founded on the 1800’s timber industry. These artefacts form an integral part of the complex workings of society, which opens the issue of conservation and how to retain a buildings identity beyond the western views of restoration and preservation. This project was created through the lens of the heritage discourse exploring an interest with historical buildings that have fallen into disrepair, buildings that are part of human’s collective memory and culture. These are each tied to unique stories going beyond the physical remains but forming part of how we see ourselves and a piece in creating a record of the traces of time, creating community identity. Reusing these ruins creates cohesion between past and present. Allowing us to understand the story of place. Federica Goffi’s theoretical postition tied to time, change and conservation in respoonse to artefacts as well as relevant precedents such as the Hedmark Museum by sverre Fehn were used to produce a design response. Formalising that the artefact will be rehabilitated through clipping on a new function that embraces the past timber industry. This change brings it into the 21st century, allowing the buildings survival, beyond ruins as museum objects. The functional as well as phenomenological sensitivities of the site are used to inform the response to the layers of heritage and their connections. These issues together with the artefacts particular grading, inducing the response of re-integration into the community and establishment within its international context.

DISCONNECTED ARTEFACTS: Identifies surviving relics as disconnected objects the possible poetic gesture in re-constructing of complete past, strengthening the connections of Mnemic traces physically or intagibly

MANMADE: One notices that the grain of fabric was largely determined by the landscape with the larger commercial activities dissipating along the hills edges down to the beach

ROUTES: the main roads movement direction results in the traffic moving past the roat to the site, seperating locals with the narrative of the past

VEGETATION: the shed sitting within an enclave of indigenous vegetation and the poetic tie between ruination and the nature formas an imporant constraint in the design

HISTORIC: The heritage trace in plett is currently underutilized being treated as preserved artefacts and neefs to be re-integrated into the community

LANDSCAPE: The landscape froms a protective barrier around the site and was a key factor in determining the start and the growth of the town
