THE REFUGEE PROBLEM PAST AND PRESENT

“The land flourished because it was fed from so many sources–because it was nourished by so many cultures and traditions and peoples.” -Lyndon B. Johnson

MAIN CAUSES  Religious/National/Social/Racial/Political

Persecution  War  Gender/Sexual Orientation  Hunger  Climate Change

ORIGINS ď‚—

The idea that a person who sought sanctuary in a holy place could not be harmed without inviting divine retribution was familiar to the ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians.

LARGEST REFUGEE CRISIS  Great Migration  Korean war: refugee flee  Yugoslav civil war  Great Lakes refugee crisis

GREAT MIGRATION ď‚— The Great Migration, sometimes known as the Great

Northward Migration, was the movement of six million African-Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1916 and 1970.

Korean war: refugee flee ď‚— Residents from Pyongyang, North Korea, and refugees

from other areas climb perilously over shattered girders of the city's bridge on December 4, 1950, as they flee south across the Taedong River to escape the advance of Chinese Communist troops.

Yugoslav civil war ď‚— The Yugoslav Wars were a

series of separate but related ethnic conflicts, wars of independence and insurgenc ies fought in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001, which led to the breakup of the Yugoslav state. The estimated number of refugees ranges from 600,000 to over 1 million.

Great Lakes ď‚— The Great Lakes refugee crisis is the common name

for the situation beginning with the exodus in April 1994 of over two million Rwandans to neighboring countries of the Great Lakes region of Africa in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. However, the humanitarian relief effort was vastly compromised by the presence among the refugees of many of the government officials who carried out the genocide, who used the refugee camps as bases to launch attacks against the new government.

Current Situation At the time being there are two large refugee crisis. One in Colombia and one in Middle-East.

Colombia  The conflict between the Colombian government and

armed Marxist guerillas that began in the mid 1960s have left over 3 million people as ‘refugees in their own country’.

Middle East  Over two million Syrians seeking safety in Turkey,

Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq  The refugee crisis – one element of a larger displacement crisis affecting nearly 80% of the estimated 8.7m Syrians deemed to be in a situation of humanitarian need – is massive and affects the entire region
