INVISIBLE CITIES NICOLA KENNY 16305206
There is an order to be found within the disorder of the city. There is an underlying structure in the detail, colour and beauty of our surroundings. The built landscape is a place that is still, permanent and ordered, yet life moves and breathes in and around it. What is permanent and solid lies in contrast to the movement seen in the patterns, landscaping and activities of the physical environment.

The theme I am exploring is the order to be found within the city and at times how this order is amplified by the disorder around it. I seek to capture the disorder, chaos and varied landscape of the city through clear and structural framing and organisation. The built landscape is a place that is still and permanent and yet life moves and breathes in and around it. In my photography I will explore what is permanent and solid in contrast to the movement in patterns, landscaping and activity that take place around this. In previous assignments I have been focussing on the work of Stephen Shore, considering the way in which he manages to capture the built landscape in all of its detail, colour and beauty. The photography in my project will explore this physical landscape in a similar way. The first part of this series focusses on the movement that happens around monuments and landscapes The second collection of images focusses on the order and disorder to be found in the city through careful structural framing. I set up my photographs as Shore does with a tripod and carefully framing of the scene in a clear and structured way. I did this using the geometric grid on my camera. I wanted to use an extremely ordered composition and worked to carefully align and frame specific views and places in the landscape. I set up the photos with a very small aperture in order to capture all the detail in the frame as Shore does. Furthermore, I used a very low iso where I could to get a smooth image to best show the detail and colour of the landscape around me. I experimented with using a slow shutter speed to balance the photo and get the lighting correct and to avoid over or under exposing the photo. I often used bracketing as I found it quite difficult to get the lighting right considering that I was using such a long shutter speed. In the editing process I focussed mainly on cropping photos and attempting to distil them down to their base – This for me was at the essence of a process in finding and framing the disorder of the city in an ordered way.
