Introduction Paintings Prints Sculpture
Introduction To exhibit one’s work at home may seem to some a tad amateur and rustic, (I already hear the tsk tsk’s in those smarter suburbs close by, where liberal lashings of grey paint has become the pseudo-discreet aesthetic signal of material success and smartness!), but a home gallery provides a personalized space; an opportunity of avoiding those excruciating metropolitan sophistications and the generic urban maze of schmerz-vortexes. Here in Darling, plainly not a particular joy to the architectural eye, I have satisfactorily ‘self-shown’ my own work at various venues since 1992. I suppose it has become a nasty habit. New works invariably make the place seem fresh and alive; re-imagined. It’s life and progress and, yes I’m going to say it, love! And I like people to make a special journey to come and see the work; to have to take some trouble. Nowadays, artists, and more problematically their work, are generally taken for granted in cities. As if artists owe their work to everyone; to these oh-so-casual modish consumers of art. If I hear one more person avowing their passion for art, I shall scream and bite their heads off, in no particular order. One hears of a ‘town car’. That’s pretty much where art is now: town art. Just look at all those many horrid new pieces of ‘public’ art beginning to clutter up the urban context. My view is that a painting, or modest sized sculpture, is still discreetly flexible; can always be re-hung; moved about; stored away. But recent public art works make my teeth ache. Enough already! Even dustbins are beginning to look more attractive; more artistic; less literal in their environment. The works reproduced in this online exhibition catalogue are divided into three categories, reflecting three recent areas of artistic exploration: painting, printmaking and sculpture.
