PREFACE

Dear reader, This portfolio portrays a selection of the projects in which I participated during the two years and four months I spent working for OMGEVING, an office for architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism located in Antwerp, Belgium. The first two years of this period constituted my internship, which I completed in april 2017. As of May 2017 I am officially admitted to the Tabel van de Orde van Architecten.

execution stage. I feel confident that during my studies and my internship I have acquired the skills necessary to be an integral part of a dedicated design team and the motivation and conviction that this is what I want to do for the rest of my professional life. I’m convinced that I can add value to the office I work for while continuing to gain experience, improve my technical know-how and learn to work with clients on a daily basis.

This portfolio should be considered as an addendum to my student portfolio, which can be sollicited online: https://issuu.com/nicolaasvanorshoven

As I’m writing this I’m preparing for a trip around the world that will last for an undefined amount of time, in which I will probably not work as an architect. While I realize this journey will create a ‘gap’ in my resume that could potentially scare off future employers, I hope that they will be able to look past this lack of very recent work experience and instead welcome the fresh outlook on the world that I hope to acquire during my travels. After all as architects we are shaping this world, trying to enhance the quality of life of its people. Our buildings affect us. They reflect our cultural values and mould our behaviour. “ We shape our dwellings, and afterwards our dwellings shape us,” Winston Churchill said. Therefore I have no doubts that getting to know some more of the world and the cultural diversity that characterizes us as humans will not only make me a better person, but also a better architect.

During my time at OMGEVING I got the chance to work on a wide range of different projects, both in the fields of architectural design and urbanism. I also got a taste of all the different phases of the design process, from candidacy documents and design competitions to preliminary design, building permit and construction site supervision. As time passed my focus shifted primarily in the direction of architectural design as opposed to urbanism. My internship made it clear to me that I don’t want to lose touch with the technical side of the job. Getting to know the execution phase of a project proved just as interesting as the design process and strengthened my desire to be involved in the entire building process from first sketch to built result, rather than specialize in either the design stage or the

ZWARTE LEEUWSTRAAT PROJECT TEAM [execution phase] Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Piet Deruytter DATE february 2016 - july 2017 [500 days] LOCATION Bonheiden, Belgium TYPE residential architecture [social housing] SCALE medium DESCRIPTION On an abandoned site amidst a small village an extension project is being realized with a public garden and 19 social apartments. The redevelopment of the vacant monastery building to 5 apartments and the realization of 14 new units will provide an upgrade for the centre of the residential district Diedonken. 8

The project, that originally started in 1998, knew a turbulent development history. The public tender phase had to be repeated three times over the years, due to different setbacks. The bankruptcy of the main contractor, the expiration of the building permit and protests of the neighbourhood caused the initial design to be adjusted several times. CONCEPT With respect for the characteristic and solemn appearance of the brick architecture, a limited extension of the old monastery is created against its blank wall. It enters into dialogue with the remarkably designed head of the adjacent new building, that is elevated above the ground level. A deliberate choice of masonry and the adoption of the characteristic concrete beams that originate in the monastery intertwine old and new into a coherent whole. All living areas in the new building are well oriented, facing south. Shading for the apartments on the first floor is realized with a continuous canopy over the terraces. The ground floor apartments are suitable for wheelchair users. The apartments in the former monastery building have east-oriented terraces and large windows that provide plenty of natural light. TRIVIA Laureate of the design competition, scheduled to be built in 2019

14

DESCRIPTION After a competition phase De Ideale Woning commissioned OMGEVING to further develop ‘Ekeren wijk III’. This project entails the demolition of terraced houses in three different districts in Ekeren and the construction of a total of 22 new single-family homes and apartments intended for social housing. CONCEPT The three project sites are located near Pastorijveld, Driehoekstraat and Jos Claessensstraat and are largely determined by the specific characteristics of the archetype of the corner lot. All three plots were designed according to a matrix of design strategies. First, in all three project sites the cell wall is finished according to the profile of the adjacent houses. This way the new building is embedded in the local tissue and respects the existing scale and streetscape. Next, we shaped the grain size of the sites to suit the neighbourhood by articulating the volumes. The characteristic features of each corner lot are amplified by their specific architectural form and the way the sites are situated. Considering the orientation of every site terraces are optimally positioned to equip every unit with a high-quality outdoor space and sufficient daylight. Lastly the organization of pedestrians, cyclists and cars takes into account the specific characteristics of each site. This organizes the public and private domain in a clear and accessible way.

Winston Churchill PROJECT TEAM Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Sarah Boschman, Niki Van Turenhout, Marc Van Hove DATE april - may 2016 [8 weeks] LOCATION Winston Churchill square, Ghent COOPERATION re-st TYPE residential architecture [social housing] SCALE large

18

DESCRIPTION Commissioned by WoninGent OMGEVING and RE-ST collaborated on a design competition for the replacement of existing social housing on the site of Groene Briel, located on Winston Churchill Square in Ghent. The assignment was to realize 60 living entities in a 7-storey building on columns within the footprint of the existing building. CONCEPT The building to be replaced exemplifies postwar modernism. The positive and progressive thinking that designates green open space, air, light and a good orientation as essential characteristics for collective and urban living, is still regarded as an undeniable quality of this site. The design proposal allows space for 63 residential units, distributed around three vertical circulation cores. The design aims to maximize the flow of light and air through the apartments by locating the living spaces on the west and the open kitchens on the eastern facade of the building. All living areas connect to a terrace or winter garden. The structure of the building is a contemporary interpretation of Le Corbusier’s Maison Domino principle and consists of columns and floor slabs as a flexible framework. The space under the pilotis is regarded as a communal entrance area, divided into three sealed transparent entrance halls. These large compartments can be used for gatherings, mailboxes and bicycle storage.

OMGEVING OFFICE RENOVATION PROJECT TEAM [Execution phase] Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Peter Seynaeve, Nathalie Verelst DATE january 2016 - june 2017 LOCATION Berchem, Belgium TYPE office SCALE small

22

DESCRIPTION More than 15 years after the initial renovation that was necessary before moving here, and after growing into a nationally and internationally reknowned design office employing more than 60 architects, landscape architects and urbanists, OMGEVING decided that it was time to upgrade their office accordingly. The building, a 3-storey former warehouse and callcenter, didn’t need any structural work, but its interior, layout and overall look and feel were outdated. CONCEPT One of the main changes of the renovation was to replace the main entrance for clients from the first to the second floor. The official entrance got a strong accent in the form of a living green wall to accentuate OMGEVING’s green philosophy. Linked with the entrance the ‘wunderkammer’ serves both as a waiting area for clients and as an exhibition room where models, presentation panels and brochures can be exhibited. Also the rest of the office got a makeover. The existing ‘tapis-plein’ flooring disappeared under new oak parquet and the electricity, data cables, alarm system and lighting were completely rewired. Walls, ceilings and furniture got a paint job and new windows replaced the leaking ones on the backside of the building. A new kitchen completed the renovation. Careful planning and a clear rotation schedule made sure the office could keep functioning during the renovation works with minor inconvenience for the employees.

PPS MEERLE - VICARAGE SITE PROJECT TEAM Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Kaat Balcaen, Marc Van Hove DATE march - april 2017 [8 weeks] LOCATION Meerle, Belgium COOPERATION LV-Architecten, groep Van Roey

VICARAGE SITE

TYPE residential architecture SCALE medium TRIVIA Laureate of the design competition, currently in the negotiation phase with the local govenment 28

DESCRIPTION As a part of a larger project to revitalize the village centre of Meerle, 10 new apartments are created on the site of the old vicarage. The compact one- and two-bedroom units aim for a market of young families and elderly. CONCEPT The patio typology, where all apartments are arranged around a central ‘patio’ or collective garden, is a direct result from the contextual constraints imposed by the location. In order to allow an optimal orientation with east and south oriented terraces the plot is built in an L-shape along the north-western sides. In order to create an intimate central garden and give the development a clear identity towards the street an extra volume is placed on the corner of the plot. The fourth side is comprised of an on-site parking area covered by a carport. The apartments on the first floor are accessible through 3 sets of stairs that also host space to safely store bicycles. All ground floor apartments are designed to fit the needs of wheelchair users. The program is kept rather flexible: the ground floor corner volume can be either used as an apartment, a workspace for a small business or the communal space in a larger co-housing project.

KAPELLEWEGEL PROJECT TEAM Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Fien Batens, Marc Van Hove DATE november 2016 - january 2017 [12 weeks] LOCATION Wetteren, Belgium TYPE residential architecture SCALE medium DESCRIPTION Commissioned by a project developer OMGEVING designed 76 new living units on a plot close to Wetteren. The project entails 25 single family houses with garage, 16 single family houses without garage, 9 stacked units and 26 apartments. 32

CONCEPT The chosen building morphology is the result of design research that attempted to start a dialogue between single-family houses with garden and stacked housing units in a public park. The client also wanted both houses with garage and without garage. The houses with built-in garages are situated at the edges of the site as the plots here are deeper. The two central rows of houses each consist of eight terraced units and two stacked units. They all park collectively on the ground level. The stacked units form the transition area between the row houses and the higher apartment buildings next to the railway. All row houses have their own private backyard. In the central housing rows, these backyards demarcate a 7m wide green strip that serves as a slow road, play area, rainwater buffer, informal back door and gateway to the public park. The houses on the edges of the project area can also reach their garden in an informal way through various wheelbarrow paths. Their sheltered and subtle implantation gives them a semi-private character, ideal to reach the garden by bike or to pay a quick back door visit to the neighbours. All houses also have a small front yard to prevent direct views from the street.

SPORTOASE SWIMMING POOLS PROJECT TEAM Nicolaas Van Orshoven, Karol Grygolec, Steven Petit, Marc Van Hove, Anca Paninopol, Andries Deconinck, Luc Wallays, Magdalena Budyta DATE 2015 - 2016

Heist-op-den-Berg

LOCATION Kortrijk, Zwevegem, Roeselare, Heist-op-denBerg, Temse, Mol, Lommel COOPERATION LD-architecten TYPE SCALE medium

36

TRIVIA Laureate of the design competitions for the swimming pools of Roeselare and Heist-op-denBerg, scheduled to be built in 2019 DESCRIPTION Commissioned by Sportoase, OMGEVING designed seven different swimming pool complexes across Flanders to participate in DBFMO procedures, based on the principle of a public-private cooperation. CONCEPT Within the varying design briefs of each municipality we aimed for context-specific buildings that blend seamlessly into their environments while at the same time meeting all the requirements of both the municipal government and Sportoase. The materiality and volumes of the pools are a direct reinterpretation of the prevailing typologies that are present in the area. Depending on the site, the volumes open as a window on the surrounding landscape or harmoniously transition into the built-up environment. Due to their spaciousness, the new swimming pool complexes are wellconnected to their respective environments on all sides.
