Judges Yvonne Lorkin Terry Copeland Terry has over 20 year’s experience in the wine industry in a variety of roles, and is currently the New Zealand Supply Manager for Treasury Wine Estates which owns brands such as Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Wynns, and Matua Valley. As one of New Zealand’s leading international wine judges, Terry regularly travels overseas to judge at international wine award shows as well as being a Senior Judge at all of New Zealand’s major wine competitions since 1994. Terry is also a contributor to the Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Book which is the world’s biggest selling wine book and continues to be a media commentator about the NZ wine industry.

Yvonne is deeply involved in the New Zealand wine industry. For the past year, Yvonne has written and presented Thirsty Work, the only New Zealand wine programme screened on the Food Channel. Yvonne is also the Beverages Editor for Dish Magazine, has a syndicated weekly wine column that runs across nine newspapers and is a fortnightly guest on Afternoons with Jim Mora on Radio NZ National. In addition to being a senior wine show judge, she operates her own wine consultancy business, runs wine education classes and is called on as an industry commentator.

Avenues Ben Glover

Sam Kim Sam has been involved for the past 25 years in New Zealand hospitality, wine retail, importing and distribution, as well as running wine courses and master classes. He holds a Certificate in Winemaking from EIT (Hawke’s Bay), and has been judging wine for the last 16 years for various wine competitions and magazines. Sam is also a regular panel member for Cuisine magazine, he publishes wine review magazine Wine Orbit, writes for the Yahoo New Zealand Lifestyle/Food page and contributes to Cuisine Wine Country, as well as various trade magazines.

Jim Harre Jim and his wife own and operate The Gates Country Lodge; a boutique luxury lodge situated in New Zealand’s South Island. Jim has judged at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Liquorland Top 100 Wine Show, Easter Show Wine Awards, San Francisco International Wine Competition, London Decanter World Wine Awards and the Japan International Wine Challenge. Jim is currently a Senior Judge with New Zealand Winegrowers, Chairman of Judges for the New World Wine Awards and a Wine Consultant for Air New Zealand.

Marlborough born & bred, Ben has been considered one of the wine regions top winemakers for well over a decade. Now Chief Winemaker at Mud House Wines, Ben makes quality wines from Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Central Otago. His selection as the New Zealand representative scholar for the inaugural Len Evans tutorial in 2001 and his 15 years of experience as a national and international wine judge are testaments to his dedication to quality wine – both as a winemaker and as an appreciative wine drinker.

Petter Evans Petter has been involved in the New Zealand wine industry for more than 20 years. A graduate of Roseworthy College in 1984 he has worked for wineries in Germany and as a winemaker in Canterbury including St Helena, Waipara West and now with Sherwood Estate. Petter has judged previously for the Bragato Wine Awards and International Aromatic Wine Competition.

Sarah-Kate Dineen Sarah-Kate is a winemaker with a depth of experience in the Hunter Valley, Australia and Europe who along with her husband Dan have moved back to New Zealand, creating the family owned winery Maude Wines in Wanaka, Central Otago. Sarah-Kate’s achievements in Australia have seen her become a Young Achiever Scholar as well as a Len Evans Scholar, progress up through the wine show judging system becoming a full judge and panel chair of many capital and regional wine shows throughout Australia. Sarah-Kate is now enjoying judging at many New Zealand wine shows.

Objective of the Competition The objective of the Avenues International Aromatic Wine Competition is to promote aromatic wine varieties. The competition is open to all Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Viognier and other wine varieties made in an aromatic style, from any internationally recognised region. The aim of the competition is to highlight to the wine industry and consumers the best wines commercially available. Promotion The competition medal winners will be announced with a media release to key media on 16 October. Results are also circulated to our wine industry database and advertised in the Sunday Star Times, The Press and Avenues. The winning wines will be displayed at the Canterbury A&P Show in November within the Food & Wine NZ Pavilion. Over 100,000 people visit the three day Show. The 2013 Canterbury A&P Show will run from Wednesday 13 - Friday 15 November. Medal winning wines will also be profiled on the Canterbury A&P Show website - www.theshow.co.nz. All entrants will receive two tickets to the Canterbury A&P Show. All medal winning entries are eligible to receive four boxes of 250 Gold, Silver or Bronze medal labels; Trophy winners are eligible to receive two boxes of 250 Trophy medal labels. MEDAL LABELS WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Additional quantities are available from organisers at cost. (Information on requesting and purchasing additional medal labels will go out with results.) Conditions of Entry All wines must be commercially available. The minimum quantities required at the time of judging for the New Zealand market is 500 litres for each entry. Entries are restricted to commercially bottled wines (i.e., tank or barrel samples are not permitted). As pioneers of the New Zealand wine industry, it was Ross and Bill Spence who planted the first Sauvignon Blanc vines in New Zealand and their vineyard (Matua Valley) which developed the Sauvignon Blanc industry we know today.
