EMERGING DESIGNER:
ominique aylor Earlier this week I had the opportunity to sit down with an aspiring designer and a fast-becoming a rising star. A London College of Fashion graduate and co-winner of Sony Ericsson Live-View, Dominique Taylor’s luxurious, detailed, anatomy-inspired; designs that are both stylish and multifunctional, make her one to watch in years to come. In Melbourne Fitzroy, I met Dominique for a catch up and to talk about her new collection. I couldn’t wait to hear more about how this laid-back, young designer has made so much headway in cracking the industry, in such a short space of time…

Why did you decide to specialize in Womenswear? When I started designing, I found that I didn’t really connect with Menswear but I just clicked with Womeswear. My recent collections are quite androgynous though.
How did winning the Sony Ericsso LiveView competition impact your career? After co-winning the Sony Ericsson Live-View Competition in 2011, I was given the opportunity to be part of the Cemil Ipeki runway show and Fashion Mode Designs. And then after my completing my studies at LCF I was headhunted by Crystal Deroche in 2013.
What have been some career highlights of your year so far? Most recently The Vintage Wardrobe Fashion Show a Charity fashion show run by British Red Cross in November –seeing my designs on that runway was a great feeling. Traveling to America and Australia to promote my designs was beneficial and rewarding.
What we can expect from Dominique in the near future. “I have two new, interchangeable collections: ‘Core Collection’ and ‘Chiaroscuro Collection’. They will be released simultaneously. The core collection consists of tailored staple pieces designed for the office and professional women who work and care about fashion. The seasonal trend collection, of which is first called ‘Chiaroscuro’ focuses on the leather laser cut trend, based on research of shadow art.”

A cool summer start in Italy Mon, 27 Jun 2013
Dear Pardon I have taken up a spot of writing again after a long break. This is the first part of my trip with Mamma this summer. Enjoy. As the sun came out we bid farewell to the Lido of Venice. Lido means beach and that is one of the reasons we went there, so Mamma could sunbathe and catch her winter tan. As my photos of Italy only too well depict, there were plenty of wet, grey days and it is as if The Almighty wanted a serious laugh he pulled the sun out of the bag as we bid Arrivederci to the lovely Quattro Fontane. We have our overnight journey to Paris tonight. But going back, I would like to describe more my holiday with Mamma. Passing through Verona we managed just a couple of hours in this stunning city. It was pouring with rain and we were amazed to see the topless, one storey Hop On Hop Off bus riding round the streets. A couple of brave tourists in yellow ponchos hung on for dear life, not daring to sit in the puddled chairs. After driving round and viewing as much as possible from the car, the sun came out and we made our way to Giulietta’s balcony (Romeo and Juliet). Well, no one was on the Hop On Hop Off bus because every man and his dog were looking for Romeo! I am glad I saw it but really what is all the fuss about? The best thing perhaps was all the amorous messages and sticky old chewing gummed notes swearing undying love on every millimetre of the long walls and wrought iron gates. Square metre upon square metre! If I had more time, this is definitely a city worthy of a couple of nights stay. Minimum.
Bellagio was definitely the highlight of our trip to Italy. An unexpected stop and for both of us, we found it the most beautiful place we have ever visited. It is around 30km north of Como and depending on how you approach it, can take from 20 minutes to 2 hours from Como. It is incredibly chic but with no snobbery. Beautiful shops, stunning buildings, pure good taste wherever you look and the most manicured gardens and incredible attention to detail encase it. You can take ferries over to various different places along the lake and one day we went across and drove down to Villa d’Este, one of ‘The Famous hotels’ in the world. It was absolutely stunning and wherever you look, you want to take a photo.

Within 2 hours of landing in France we arrived in Giverny to the most stunning little B & B. Our host Stephane was a horticulturist and had the most impressive gardens. He also owned another 5 houses within the tiny village and took us on a tour of his family home’s garden. The home, really more of a mansion, was 500 years old and he had created a medieval garden including large raised vegetable patches and an apple orchard in the following garden. Each apple tree normally being planted over a grave. In this case he assured us there was no one beneath but the idea being that the tree created a new beginning for the deceased, eternity as such.
Arriving in Le Havre we then found that the ship was another 15km from the town. I have never visited such a vast port in my life and ours was not the last one by any means. We dropped our car quite near our quay and embarked within minutes. The cruise actually began in Southampton but for four reasons we chose to miss the first day. 1. We didn’t want to fly into UK and then drive down to S’hampton and lose a day’s travel that way, when we could take the overnight train from Venice to Paris. 2. We could visit Monet’s garden which was on the road between Paris and Le Havre. 3. We missed out on standing in the embarkation queue which we were told could be an all-day affair if 5 cruise ships were in town together ie. up to 20,000 people waiting to board a boat! And 4, possibly the most important, how the hell were we ever going to get all that luggage on an airplane? Mamma is flying out of UK back to Melbourne and has a good allowance back home but cheap flights within Europe have max 20kg and that would never do!!
And so here we are onboard. It has been an eye opener for me, that is for sure! Wishing you all well and look forward to hearing from you.

New York, New York, oops am I repeating myself? Mon, 17 Jan 2014
Der Pardon May I begin by saying that there is a solution to everything and you can bless the Americans to have solved one of my main problems here. The coffee situation was getting bad but with a bit of luck and exploration of the thousands of supermarket aisles I found this rather wonderful concoction called Creamy Chocolate Coffee Mate to add to my instant affairs. No, it probably wouldn’t suit everybody’s palette but it sure as heck has made my mornings a brighter place to be!

On the Thursday I had decided to make it a NYC highlight day and started out by walking the Brooklyn Bridge. I had no idea that it would be such a wonderful thing to do and I was lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day with a crisp 4C, positive heat wave here! I had my NY guidebook with me which also recommended a few walking tours. After the bridge I jumped on the train to return to Manhattan and chose to walk through Greenwich Village and Soho, a 2 hour walk. On the way I stopped off in a little restaurant and had an awesome falafel which must have been the best thing to do. I was just revving with energy and could not seem to stop after this. Having walked these two areas thoroughly most people would have called it a day but I decided to then take the Staten Island ferry across and view the Statue of Liberty. In all my life I have never seen so many people get on one boat. I could not believe we would all fit, but in fact there was room for even more. These ferries run every 15 minutes and just proves how many people there are over here.
On my return I was a sucker for punishment and chose to do the walking tour of the Financial District including Wall Street. It was a real eye opener and I never expected it to be so beautiful. It is absolutely an area not to be missed and one should definitely have a list of buildings to make note of, as there are many highlights in this small but very exclusive area. The architecture is wonderful, the cobbled streets and the light are quite amazing. By the time I finished this tour it was dusk and although I was now dreaming of my chilli chocolate hot drink, I plugged on.
I made my way to Macy’s my all-time favourite department store with its outdoor seating area where one can rest, have a coffee, read a paper or just watch the world go by. On this miraculously warm day, although now evening, we had balmy weather just hovering above zero; there was hardly an empty chair! Having seen my photo with my coat on, Mum had asked me to buy her a shorter version and this was actually my reason for going to the store as my shopping days are over, with my savings pleading recovery.
I have no idea what made me want to do so much in one day of NYC. I still have a few things left on my To See list but the most important have all been covered. I hope this inspires you to see this city. It is quite incredible. Take care

PRO PACKING Folding Great for: Structured suitcases.
Wrinkle-prone fabrics, such as linen and silk. Tailored garments (shirts and jackets) and thick sweaters. Bundling Great for: A structured suitcase. Bundling doesn’t work as well with duffels.
STEP 1 Decide what you’re taking. And, just as important, what you’re not. These streamlining guidelines will help, whether you’re bound for a beach or a boardroom. Check list help. Then, for a handy reminder about all the other stuff you’ll need, from floss to batteries, print the vacation-essentials checklist atrealsimple.com/packingchecklist. Stick to a colour scheme. Start with two neutrals for your core basics and add two to three fun shades that coordinate or plan your wardrobe around one shoe colour. You need only three pairs—sneakers, flats or sandals, and heels or wedges. Be a lightweight. Leave behind pieces with bulky linings or heavy embellishments. Stretchy jeans or jeggings can take up half the space of regular denim.
A long trip. People who really hate wrinkles.
STEP 3 FILL ’ER UP 1. Line the bottom with a plastic trash bag. After you’ve packed, add another one on top. This helps fend off wrinkles. 2. Stash footwear and heavy stuff along the wheel base. 3. Lay the foundation. Start with tightly packed rolled clothing.
STEP 2 ROLL IT, FOLD IT, OR BUNDLE IT Rolling Great for:
4. Build the second level. Layer folded dresses, pants, and skirts on top of rolled clothing. 5. Move on to the third level. Add thick sweaters, jackets, and folded shirts. 6. Finish with the top level. Lay crushable items, such as dresses or molded bras. 7. Wrap belts around the interior frame of the bag.
Unstructured bags, like a duffel. Stretchy knit fabrics that are unlikely to wrinkle, including T-shirts and jeans.
8. Cradle fragile souvenirs in your bulkiest sweaters and arrange them in the centre of the bag, where the least movement occurs. 9. All-weather items like a poncho and hats go on top, in case you need them right away.
