In order to modify the least possible of the natural topography, the distribution of the school was essential to balance the land displacement and open accessible green areas. The green areas propose the essential contact between kids and nature, while the trees grant shading and the soil prevents flooding. Another solution for controlling sun and rain is the canopy that connects the 5 different blocks, with 3.5 meters of width that prevents direct sunlight and rain at the doors and windows. The use of local materials, like compressed earth blocks, wood structures and woven straw, allows a cheaper and easier construction. With blocks disconnected from the structure, it’s possible to phase the construction and assemble the structure and roof first, so the walls can be built while covered from the rain. These blocks are then enveloped by the woven straw panels, making a double skin facade that, added to the lifted roof, is able to control thermal mass and prevent insects and small animals.
