Welcome to the course series “FORM AND FUNCTION IN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT“

For several years orthodontic treatment has been mainly focused on the occlusion. As the patient’s needs and demands become more focused, on physical appearance, the treatment goals and therefore the treatment planning should consider not only occlusal features, but parameters that will create a harmonious relationship between facial appearance and an equilibrated occlusion.

Prof. Dr. Carlalberta Verna, PhD Head of the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry School of Dentistry, Basel University, Switzerland

1. COURSE - 9. / 10. May 2014

TREATMENT PLANNING

Renato Cocconi (RC) - Stefano Troiani (ST) The course, mainly geared towards orthodontists and orthodontic residents, will focus on the diagnostic and treatment planning parameters to be taken into consideration to obtain optimal results. Thorough and accurate diagnostic records, detailed analysis and a comprehensive treatment plan can also yield shorter treatment times, better results and improved stability. The speakers will present their approach in training orthodontists how to implement this comprehensive treatment process.

2. COURSE - 26. / 27. September 2014

VERTICAL CONTROL

Domingo Martin (DM) - Stefano Troiani (ST) The control of the vertical dimension during orthodontic treatment is a challenging issue. The skeletal pattern in growing patients is difficult to control and in adult patients the control is even more challenging. The course, which is of a theoretical nature, is mainly geared towards orthodontists and orthodontic residents. It can be considered as an independent unit or as an adjunct to the other courses on face driven orthodontics held by Dr. Cocconi and Dr. Troiani. The speakers will focus on the biological and biomechanical tools that can improve the vertical control during orthodontic treatment in order to reach the desired treatment goals and achieve stability. 26. September 2014 09.30 - 10.00 Introduction / presentation (Prof. C. Verna) 10.00 - 11.30 Continuous archwire biomechanics (ST) 11.30 - 13.00 Biomechanics of molar vertical control (ST) 14.00 - 15.30 Biomechanics of molar vertical control (ST) 16.00 - 17.30 Vertical dimension and surgery (ST) 26. 3. COURSE - 27./ 28. February 2015

FINISHING

Renato Cocconi (RC) - Stefano Troiani (ST) As in the case of treatment planning, for several years the orthodontic finishing phase has been focused mainly on the achievement of an excellent dental relationship. As the patient’s needs and demands focus more on physical appearance, the finishing needs to take into account the harmonious relationship between facial appearance and equilibrated occlusion. The course, mainly geared towards orthodontists and orthodontic residents, will focus on the “Finishing Challenges of Adult Treatment” which must be taken into consideration to obtain optimal results. This will include the speakers’ approach in managing the detailing of tooth position and occlusion, and the adjustment of gingival margins, dental shape and size, including key points and tips. Finally, the concept of finishing in respect to occlusal, biological and aesthetic parameters will be presented.

27. February 2015 09.30 - 10.00 Introduction / presentation (Prof. C. Verna) 10.00 - 11.00 Face treatment approach (RC) 11.30 - 13.00 Finishing starts with planning (RC) 14.00 - 15.30 Finishing starts with planning (RC) 16.00 - 17.30 Occlusal finishing (ST) 28.
