Spaces should accommodate: -Industry Display: Space should be provided for industry partners to display -Interactive Exhibition: A flexible space that engages visitors in the everyday application of Chemistry and careers through interactive displays. -Green Zone: Space should provide information and encourage discussion about Green Chemistry. -Observation Platform: To provide a space to view the beautiful surroundings and learn about the science of it. -Careers Zone: To provide a space where the careers in Chemistry can be encouraged. GROUND FLOOR GENERAL ARRANGEMENT PLAN The Ground floor is a homage to the Historical Context of Filter House, where existing features are highlighted to create an immersive experience. Existing machinery is displayed within the Entrance Hall and replica clarity bowls play a tribute to the historic routines of the building in the welcome Exhibit. The Tanks now house exhibits relating to the filtration of water, with a space provided for industry display. The newly created ‘Royal Society of Chemistry Talk Tank’ is a branded space where the ethical topics of chemistry can be discussed and explained, making chemistry more relatable to visitors and encouraging them to join in the debate.

FIRST FLOOR GENERAL ARRANGEMENT PLAN The Upstairs space is a bright and spacious environment where interactive and tactile exhibits portray the Human and everyday side of chemistry. A Custom Designed Flexible Exhibitions space allows the Centre to update their exhibits regularly, whilst the permanent Experiments create an exciting and inspiring atmosphere.

Taking Advantage of the sites beautiful surroundings, the new terrace offers views across the River Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. Visitors are greeted with a welcome exhibit., Conveying both the Filter House brand ethos and the rich historical context of the Site. Clarity bowls take pride of place, filled with water from the river outside and echoing the daily ritual the workers undertook every morning. Filter House Design Pack

WATER STORY PROJECTION TANK Visitors begin their experience by being immersed in the rich history of Filter House. Located within one of the existing tank structures, the Projection Tank exhibits archive images of the site and explains its importance to society including why it was built, how it worked and the changes it has experienced.

RSC TALK TANK The RSC Talk Tank provides an immersive experience where the ethical and humanitarian aspects of chemistry can be highlighted and discussed. Designed to create an inclusive environment , visitors can feel confident to join the debate in a comfortable setting. Reflecting the RSC Brand colours, the tank aims to gather opinions and increase awareness about the real issues of Chemistry.

INTERIOR VIEW- WORLD CHEMISTRY EXHIBIT The World Chemistry Exhibit explores the wider applications of chemistry. The interactive display invites visitors to explore the area of the world where chemistry can solve some of the worlds biggest problems- water, food and energy. Designed to be inclusive and accessible for all, the exhibit features a lowered surface for wheelchair users and a step for children to partake independently.

ROOF TERRACE A newly created Roof terrace provides a fantastic view over the River Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. A covered Walkway ensures views can be enjoyed year round. Plants and their chemical properties are displayed making the roof terrace not only a great place to relax but an educational resource. 45

LOCATION: Sandford mill, Chelmsford. Filter House, built in 1955, was the first building to turn black river water into clean drinking drinking water under one roof using chemical processes. The proposed programme of Chemistry Centre honours the historical context of the past whilst providing a space that improves societies relationship with Science,inspires the next generation of chemists and reinstates a sense of pride for the Local Community.

The Ground floor is a homage to the Historical Context of Filter House, where existing features are highlighted to create an immersive experience. Existing machinery is displayed within the Entrance Hall and replica clarity bowls play a tribute to the historic routines of the building in the welcome Exhibit. The Tanks now house exhibits relating to the filtration of water, with a space provided for industry display. The newly created ‘Royal Society of Chemistry Talk Tank’ is a branded space where the ethical topics of chemistry can be discussed and explained, making chemistry more relatable to visitors and encouraging them to join in the debate.
