Some comments from our audiences.
The Belgrade’s always been the place to come and have a great night out and we’ve tried our best to make sure that this season’s fantastic range of drama, family shows, music, comedy and dance are available for the lowest possible ticket prices - helping you to continue to support us and enjoy what we have on offer. We’re also excited to have some excellent home produced shows this season, setting us on track to achieving our aim to be one of the country’s most exciting producing houses once again. Where else can you see international quality work, at a fraction of the cost of London prices, and located right on your doorstep? The Hypochondriac was a huge success in 2005 so we’re delighted to be producing another hilarious Molière classic The Miser to get the season, and 2010, off with a smile. The comedy continues with the wonderfully talented Coventry born Brothers Marquez and their wildly imaginative new play set in an Italian circus The Dark Side of Buffoon, which will play the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith after its run in Coventry. On a more serious note Behud, co-produced with the Soho Theatre, London, brings the Belgrade into the limelight with what promises to be an intriguing drama inspired by one of theatre’s most notorious battles for free speech. As always the Belgrade will be buzzing with the activities of numerous local companies including our own community groups who have several shows this season, including another In Our Own Words festival in the summer. Talking Birds are working with us to create a new show for late 2010 and we are hoping you will be able to help… see page 43 for details. Our restaurant, Petit Gourmand at the Belgrade, has gone from strength to strength, impressing Coventry food lovers with their great service and delicious menus. If you haven’t tried them yet I highly recommend you do. Plus behind the scenes you might be interested to know that Belgrade Production Services is also thriving – making the most of the theatre’s resources and skills to build sets and costumes for a variety of other stages and high profile events. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you back at the Belgrade soon.

Comic Drama
DI R ECT E D BY H A M I SH GL EN “The Miser is the meanest man you’ll ever meet. His heart is hard; his fist is tight; his neck is brass” In 17th Century England all the members of a wealthy miser’s family have fallen in love. Romance, however, isn’t the first thing on the mind of the old skinflint, who plans to save some dowry cash by marrying off his children against their will. But when he and his son become enamoured by the same young woman, and it turns out the servant his daughter’s set on marrying isn’t actually a servant at all, it becomes clear that there is more than just the family fortune at stake. Matchmakers, moneylenders, missing Lords and lost family treasure all add to the resulting spiral of outrageous, comic confusion - leaving the miser as nervous as a kitten. Because when it comes to money, who can you trust these days? Molière’s classic costume comedy is an uproarious tale of true love between a man and his money, and is brought to you by the same writer and director responsible for the acclaimed 2005 Belgrade production of Molière’s The Hypochondriac.

Since taking the Edinburgh Festival by storm in 2007, followed by sell out seasons in London’s West End, New York, Paris and Montreal, award winning Traces tours the UK for the first time.
The Belgrade is delighted to be welcoming Out of Joint. This acclaimed national and international touring theatre company is dedicated to the development and production of new writing.
Traces is a high energy, dazzling display of urban acrobatics that combines traditional circus skills with basketball, skateboarding, a mix of street and contemporary dance, traditional theatre, humour and amazing audio visual effects. Set to a soundtrack that includes hip-hop, rock and roll, blues and classical music, this infectious funky pioneering new brand of circus is a thrill-a minute that will leave you begging for more.
Celebrated children’s writer Hans Christian Andersen arrives, unannounced, for a stay at Gad’s Hill Place in the Kent marshes – home to Charles Dickens and his large, charismatic family.
The five ultra talented performers reveal snippets of their own personal stories throughout the show, drawing the audience in until the dramatic climax leaves them on the edge of their seats, willing them to pull off the seemingly impossible. “ They know how sensational they are – and if they don’t, the spontaneous standing ovations they’re getting should do the trick.” Daily Telegraph Evenings: 7.45pm Matinee: Sat 6 March, 2,30pm

To the lonely and eccentric guest, the members of Dickens’ household seem to live a life of unreachable bliss. But with his broken English, Andersen doesn’t at first see the storms brewing within the family: undeclared passions, a son about to go to India, and a growing strangeness at the heart of Dickens’ marriage. Sebastian Barry has been nominated twice for the Booker prize and his novel The Secret Scripture won the 2008 Costa prize. Max Stafford-Clark directs Niamh Cusack (Heartbeat and Always and Everyone) and David Rintoul (ITV’s Dr Finlay and Darcy in Pride and Prejudice) in this haunting new play, rich in characters and touched with wistful humour. “You expect something special from the touring company Out of Joint” The Times Evenings: 7.45pm Matinees: Weds 10 & Sat 13 March, 2.30pm

Making their third appearance at the Belgrade Theatre, The Overtures bring their brilliant Bootleg Sixties show back to Coventry by popular demand. It’s two hours of great music from the classic artists of the decade, with superb images, fab ’60s costumes and, of course, The Overtures themselves... they’re simply the best exponents of ’60s music around (just ask Sir Elton John... he personally invited them to play at his civil ceremony wedding and to support him at the 02 Arena last New Year’s Eve). So take an unforgettable journey with the songs, stars and images of pop music’s greatest decade.
The campest cult classic of all time gets the Sing-a-long-a treatment it’s been screaming for! Featuring the film, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meatloaf and Richard O’Brien, it’s the most outrageous, riotous, kitsch, wonderful romp ever. If you’ve done The Time Warp before, you’ll never have done it quite like this.

Behud (beyond belief)
By Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti. Directed by Lisa Goldman
“ Shame on Sikh playwright for her corrupt imagination” Banner at a demonstration against Behzti
In December 2004, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s controversial play Behzti rocked the world of theatre when it was sensationally cancelled after protests in Birmingham. The closure of the play sparked a vehement debate about offence and freedom of speech. In Behud, a playwright attempts to make sense of the past by visiting the darkest corners of her imagination. Set amidst the theatre establishment, politicians and protesters, Behud is a playful response to the events surrounding Behzti, and the story of an artist struggling to be heard. Hi-De-Hi is one of the best remembered TV sitcoms of all time, which starred a whole host of much-loved characters during its nine series on the BBC in the 1980s. The stage version has not been seen since it was last in the West End in 1984.
The perfect feel-good show for our times is back!
Our brand new and hilarious production will star Barry Howard and Nikki Kelly who were in the original 1980s TV sitcom as Barry and Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves and the ever-popular and very funny Damian Williams, who is the new presenter on Sky One’s Are You Smarter Than Your Ten-Year Old?, as Ted Bovis. Guaranteed to be a huge Box Office success, the characters are as fresh today as they were 30 years ago. Don’t miss out on this chance to book one of the funniest, most nostalgic and most memorable shows around.
Girls’ Night Out - a story of love, laughter and men in thongs, together with a great pop soundtrack that will have you dancing in the aisles. Both funny and touching, we follow the boys from rehearsals to performance, as they prepare for the forthcoming ‘Feast of Flesh’ contest, which could turn them from has-beens to heroes overnight. www.girlsnightout-theshow.co.uk

Scotland’s national contemporary dance company, Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) tours to the Belgrade Theatre for the first time, performing two brand new works. SDT’s work explores the human condition and what it is to be alive in the world today. Dance doesn’t always tell a story, it can be more like a poem, exploring an idea, emotion or atmosphere.
The Man What Brought us Sunshine
NQR*, a three way collaboration by SDT Artistic Director, Janet Smith, Caroline Bowditch and Marc Brew, is a chance to look at and think differently about difference. *Not Quite Right - Acronym formally used in medical records to describe unexplained difference. The Life and Times of Girl A by Ben Duke is a piece about a woman trying to tell us something important about what is happening now. What she needs is a film crew and a financier, what she’s got is a stage and some dancers. If you’ve never experienced contemporary dance before SDT are the perfect introduction. Accessible, theatrical and entertaining, prepare to be moved and engaged by the power and skill of one of the UK’s most celebrated dance companies. Evenings: 7.45pm

Based on the ‘80s movie, Footloose hits the stage with the Coventry Youth Operetta Group (YOG).
We claim our piece of land and we build our home. We mark out our territory using barriers of language, culture, beliefs and customs. If you are not one of us, you are against us.
Following two engrossing performances at the Belgrade last season, Spires Philharmonic Orchestra (a happy and dynamic blend of professional and amateur players) brings the Chorus along for the deeply expressive Mass of Bruckner, probably his first great masterpiece.
Adapted from the Oscar-winning animated film, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the story of a young woman Belle, and a Beast who is really a young prince trapped in a spell by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, then the curse will end. But time is running out and the Beast must find true love before the last rose petal falls and if he fails, then he will be doomed for all eternity.
Footloose tells the story of a city boy, Ren, who is forced to move to a rural backwater in America where unbelievably dancing is banned. This ordinary fun-loving kid can’t resist breaking the rules. YOG’s dynamic young cast presents this fast-track show with energetic dance routines and some classic 80s songs including Holding Out for a Hero?, Let’s Hear it for the Boy and not forgetting the memorable title track Footloose.
But the land does not belong to us. We are all children of nature living under a single sky. We cannot sell and buy the warmth of the land or the freshness of the air. Foot and Mouth uses the richness and versatility of the human voice in song, text and vocal improvisation to present a moving exploration of human conflict and connection.

It has affected her whole life and is now affecting her love life. Will Caroline’s attention-grabbing twin sister, Millie, be able to help her realise her dreams? Or will she continue to steal her limelight?
The Belgrade’s Third Community Festival celebrates this wealth of culture and experience with stories from some of its newest communities, and from the local communities that received them. Join us to experience several new plays based on real life experiences written by some of the City’s newest writing talent and performed in B2, the City’s newest theatre space.
In Other Words Productions presents Platforms and Trainers, a brand new stage play tackling attitudes towards Autism. This fast-paced, heart-warming and hilarious drama is written and directed by Reena Jaisiah and features original music composed by Joanne Louise Hewitt. Multi-purchase

Open Doors
Building on its national reputation as the home of Theatre in Education (TiE), the Belgrade Theatre runs a year-round programme of drama-related activities for young people and the wider community. Participants develop skills in devising, writing and acting and are supported to create and put on productions that reflect the experiences of local people, with a particular focus on marginalised groups. The current programme includes 5 Youth Theatre groups: Acting Out, a two year work-related learning programme recognised nationally as a model of best practise, The New Black, a programme targeting the city’s newest arrivals, and Theatre in Education tours.
On 12th March, the theatre will once more be opening its doors to young people aged 14+ to learn about careers in the theatre. This event offers young people an opportunity to explore a number of different careers and engage with theatre professionals from the Belgrade in a dynamic, hands-on way – including in-depth sessions, opportunities to quiz a range of arts professionals about their career, and a backstage tour of the theatre.
Big School
Limited places are available. Bookings are welcomed from both schools and individuals. Morning session begins at 9:30am; afternoon session at 1:30pm. Tickets: £5 per half day session. Tickets can be booked through Box Office. All sessions must be booked in advance.
Belgrade Production Services
Big School, the Belgrade’s highly successful Theatre in Education tour, delivered in partenship with the local authority, exploring issues of transition from Primary to Secondary school, will once again be visiting Coventry Primary schools in June. This year we are looking at the possibility of making the show available to parents with children going through this challenging transition, and to develop opportunities for working with teachers.
The Belgrade Theatre’s manufacturing and installation service for theatre, film and TV. Belgrade Production Services offers a wealth of skills and experience and provides a complete manufacturing and installation service for set construction and props including computer aided design, carpentry, joinery, metal fabrication and scenic art.
For further information please contact us on the contact details below.
Together with an experienced costume department, Belgrade Production Services offers a unique package of practical and creative skills that will turn the impossible into reality, on time and on budget.
Third Community Festival – Stories celebrating the diversity of Coventry Following on from the success of the Mysteries, the Belgrade is now working towards its third community Festival in July of 2010 (see page 40). This will be centring around stories of immigration to Coventry – stories of both those communities arriving and those who were here already.
We want your stories
The Belgrade’s two Senior Youth Theatre groups will be collaborating on this project with its Black Youth Theatre, Muslim Spoken Word group and some of the writers emerging from its writers programme.
We are currently looking for anyone who would be willing to share their stories and experiences with us. We are also keen to hear from anyone from newly arrived communities who would be interested in performing in the project. Please contact us using the details below.

Captioned Performance
The Belgrade is offering in-house captioned performances with captioners trained by Stagetext. A captioned performance is delivered live by an accredited captioner. Open captions also include sound effects and off stage noises.
Sign Language Interpreted Performance
Many of our productions are sign language interpreted. Please refer to the Diary section on pages 51 – 53 for dates.
Integrated Performance
