Contemporary Cancer Treatment as a Metabolic Disease Fusion of Eastern and Western Medicine Undergraduate Design 6 January 2019- April 2019 Site: Atlanta, GA Group Partners: Diana Azbenova, Cody Reynolds

The intent for this project was to design an Oncology center that had a radiation wing, Infusion wing, and a third space that supported our conceptual reasonings. Our third space was designed based off our idea that there are alternative treatments to curing cancer. Psychoneuroimmunology is a global discipline that gives a more humanistic approach to cancer treatments. The human mind is a machine that is crucial for fighting any kind of disease. By allowing it to thrive in a supportive environment forged by sunlight, aromas, and sublime moments, the brain will be given the home it needs to maintain a healthy positive mentality that is necessary to survive.

The human body is a machine. Each part, each function, all could not function properly without one another. The comparison that the brain is the powerhouse of this machine helped us design this conceptual analysis of Atlanta Georgia. The routes, health facilities, therapeutic facilities, and parks we found leading to our site, the brain of the operation, helps us convey that there are alternative treatments around the area that can help cure cancer.

Bok Tower Gardens Chapel Culmination of Mind, Body, and Soul Light study Design 5 August 2018- December 2018 Site: Bok Tower Gardens Polk County, Fl

The intent for this project was to construct and design a Chapel in Bok Tower Gardens that would not overpower the already existing tower in the garden. It was important to design a chapel that corresponded to its surroundings as well as the ground beneath it. I focused my attention on how light transforms a space as well as the form of the building. My attention to form was specifically to design a building that would capture emotions as people transitioned from space to space. I wanted the entrance to convey a more intimate rather darker space that would capture the essence of solidarity. The narrow hall then opens up to this larger more bright open space that guides you to the alter. As James Turrel once said, “Light is not so much something that reveals, as it is self the revelation. Light that begins to transform and capture spaces is very important when capturing a particular emotion.

Bok Tower Gardens

Zooming out of Bok Tower Gardens you are able to see the connections and routes Bok Tower has to its surroundings. One of which being the location of my intervention. Zooming into the site in the analysis to the right, you are able to see how Bok Tower and the Chapel are juxtaposing each other as well as complimenting one another. Both structures are playing an important role being directly across from one another.

Second floor- Private room for prayer

Light creates many emotions within a building per individual. Light is considered to be the soul of how architecture is designed. It helps us create the spaces within and evidently helps us design to capture an emotion that is unique to each person walking through the building.

Bok Tower Gardens

Light plays a major role in the design of Architecture. Light influences the aesthetic effect and the mood that a space creates. Light defines what a space is intended to be. With the use of light and how it transforms within a space captures very different emotions per individual.

Structural Breakdown

I focused my attention to the structure within the building and how important it is to have a strong structural component that can hold the skin as well as the material of the building itself. This model is able to hang on the wall because of the structural component i designed that is shown on the far left side. The skin of the structure is being held solely from the wire mesh that is acting as the structure. Another important element i focused on is light and how the light is being transformed by the spaces that have been designed.

How Landscape and Structure become one Landscape Design June 2019- August 2019 Site: Downtown Orlando, Fl

The purpose for this project was to design a museum that includes three galleries, three gardens that accompany the galleries, a Lobby, and an administrative space. When designing this structure, i focused primarily on how nature positively influences Art. The organic qualities of nature influences our bodies, lives, and minds and with that, influences how we create and percieve Art.

Art Museum

The Site is located in downtown Orlando near Lake Lucerne. The goal for this project is to design an art museum that can fit purposefully into the site and speak to the people in its existing environment.

In this site specifically there are three very old trees that have to be incorporated in our design. Having these tall trees alongside the museum really helps give the feeling of being surrounded by nature when inside the new

Art Museum

The interior render on the left side is showing a hallway that has a glass wall in order for people to have a view of the beautiful outdoor garden as well as feel like they are outside with nature. This hallway is surrounding the three galleries. This purpose of this space is for people to feel more connected to the raw physical world outside. The render on the right side is showing one of the three galleries with Art work that I have created myself.

Art Museum

In this section cut of the museum you are able to see the three galleries located on the second floor and the lobby space that is located on the first floor as well as its administrative space. The large circle is to be able to see the section in color and the outside of the circle in black and white. I felt it would be interesting to be able to see two different views on the cut. The smaller circle is to magnify some of the structural components that went into designing this building.

This Section is cut Vertically from North to South. In this cut you are able to see the Lobby that is located on the First floor. Moving up to the second floor you are able to enter the glass room located on the left side of the building. This room allows one to be surrounded by nature. The larger space to the right is a place of rest right by the stairs before you are able to go through the galleries. In this section cut the section blends out to show the analytical structural perspective of this building. The layers of the skin have been peeled back in order to show what is underneath.

Multi Use Complex City Block August 2019- December 2019 Site: Rome, Italy Group Partner: Kyle Davis The city of Rome is one of the oldest in the world, and is home to a plethora of archaeological ruins from its past. Our site is built on top of these recently discovered ruins-- the stables of Augustus. Plans were made to create a mausoleum, a celebration of these stables as a deeply rooted part of Roman history. Unfortunately, soon after their discovery, the funds for the project were allocated elsewhere and the idea was scrapped. The ruins were covered in weatherproof wrapping, and reburied as if they wee never discovered. The city block project serves as an opportunity to design the Mausoleum in remembrance of these stables.

Exploded Axonometric

With our city block, we have two separate sides: public and private. When entering the site, the left side of the entrance portion becomes the introductory to the public sector. The right side becomes the more private side for the residents. The private side is introduced through a more obscure entrance that takes you lower in elevation. This side has more of a direct trajectory that takes the occupant straight to the residential housing.

For the residential there are four different kinds of units people are welcome to choose from. There are studio apartments, single family, couples, and larger family apartments.

Section A

This city block project serves as the perfect opportunity to make sure this archaeological site is not buried and forgotten. Therefore, we decided to design a mausoleum and archaeological research center to make sure that roman citizens and the rest of society can continue learning from them. Derived from the concept of Old vs. New, we have utilized water from the nearby Tiber River, and the modern landscape on our site to act as intermediaries between the ancient ruins and our modem intervention.

Rehabilitation How empathy can be transformative Urban Design January 20’- May 20’ Site: Downtown Tampa, Fl

The purpose for this project was to design an innovative approach for a penal institution that is broken up into two programmatic components. When designing these two components, I focused my attention on psychology and understanding the nature of mental, emotional and behavioral characteristics. I focused on understanding how to be empathetic not only to the individual, but towards the whole entity. The purpose is to design a programmatic element that will guide people towards going through five stages to ensure a postive outlook in the end.

Circulation

To place these ideologies, we must first understand the context in which we are working in- Tampa, Florida. I found recreational parks, the relationship between downtown Tampa and its geographic conditions. By furthering my research, Tampa shows a heavy art presence specifically art studios, dance studios, museums and much more.

Light is a very important element that was focused on when designing these two buildings. Because light plays an important role in effecting peoples emotions, I analyzed the sun-path in downtown Tampa to better design the forms and placement of the two buildings.

Five stages Change is a difficult thing to instill. Making a personal life change that will carry throughout ones life can be an extremely difficult journey for one to embark on. One must be open to embracing these five stages that can lead one to forgiveness, rebirth and the reemergence of oneself.

Incapacitation- seeks to prevent any further act of crime by isolation. Deterrence- seeks to reconcile with the wrongs that have been made. Retribution- seeks to prevent further crimes by reinforcing punishment for ones wrongful doings. Rehabilitation- focuses on helping people overcome the barriers that have led them to their actions. Restoration- seeks to make amends with not only the victim, but with oneself.

Form Finding

When developing the form for the two buildings I drew inspiration from the curvature of the human form. More closely focusing on the lighthearted carefree movements of dance and ballet. The reason for using this unique curvature is to imprint the statement that Art becomes the expression of the occupants within a space, leaving behind the past sins in order to reemerge oneself. The programmatic element of having dance studios and a ballet theatre is to implement the dance/movement therapy. It is proven that psychotherapy that uses movement can positively help heal and integrate the mind, body and soul. Penal Institution

Horizontal component In these two section cuts you are able to see the programmatic elements of the dance and ballet studios being implemented throughout the structure. The green is being used to highlight the transitional movement between each space that may be reflective upon the five stages; Incapacitation, deterrence, Retribution, Rehabilitation, and Restoration.

Vertical Component In both these section cuts you are able to see the dance/movement studio on the lower floor as it moves its way upwards to the levels that hold all the cells. You are able to circulate through back and forth between buildings through the walking trail that is bridging the two buildings together.
