As times progress, we, as a society, are becoming increasingly nostalgic. Moving forward as a generation of innovators and entrepreneurs but never losing sight of how it had been done in the past; because the best way is not always the easiest or the fastest. It’s essentially taking tradition and modernizing it. By Spring/Summer 2021, Gen Z will play a much bigger role in society. Looking at their behaviors and lifestyle is important because they are, in a sense, the future. The Season of Momentum is the beginning of changing the end. A period of movement, change, and self expression. It will be the season of self love, sustainability, and speed.

We are currently experiencing a mental health crisis. The suicide rate is staggering and it is only increasing. Many say social media is to blame. Gen Z literally grew up with phones in their hands so there’s no doubt that social media is a big part of their lives. They are invested in how they portray themselves on social media, however, they are not as interested in how they look as much as what they know, believe, and do. Gen Z cares more about substance, authenticity, and getting their inner lives online. Their selfies are in the caption, not the photo. It’s all about what they have to say and they believe their voice deserves to be heard. Although social media has its downfalls, it will provide an outlet for people to interact with other people from all over the world who may be going through the same or similar things. This connection makes them feel less alone. Something that has supposedly created self hate can be transformed to be a platform for sharing self love.

As the idea of self care becomes more prevalent, we question if the skincare industry will surpass the beauty industry. Glossier has been a big driver of the “no-makeup makeup” look and it’s not going away anytime soon. People are starting to be more aware of what they are putting in/on their bodies and it has really only just begun. According to Environmental Working Group (EWG), women put an average of 168 chemicals on their face and body before they even walk out the door. Men put on an average of 85. Europe bans 1,400 chemicals from use in personal care products while the US only bans 30. With awareness comes the demand for change.

As we move towards a more accepting society, people will feel more comfortable expressing themselves and embracing the skin they’re in. Individuality and creativity are key words here. No trends will perhaps be a trend; as in wearing what you want whenever you want and not worrying about what others think. Body inclusivity and positivity will hopefully be less of a trend and more of a normality.

Sustainability [ suh-stey-nuh-bil-i-tee ] • noun 1 the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed. 2 Environmental Science: the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance. Yes, this is such an overused word right now, but it is important and has so much meaning behind it. We all have our own definition of sustainability in our heads based on our own perceptions and how we have personally experienced or witnessed it. But it is so much more than that.

Sustainability is a complex concept. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used. In its simplest form, sustainability is all about longevity. As society becomes more aware and sustainable practices become readily available and affordable, we will see a shift in all aspects of life.

We live in an age of instant gratification. When we want something, we want it immediately. Thanks, Amazon Prime! There is always this sense of urgency in the air and there are never enough hours in the day. As technology advances, we will continue to be more and more connected. To each other and everything around us.

Innovation will continue at a rapid rate. However, I believe fashion will slow down. The juxtaposition of a slow fashion industry in a fast paced world. Essentially, speed is about everything advancing. Whether that means speeding up or slowing down - it depends.
