CONCEPT / the contrast of " when the east meets west" This phrase is used to describe that Hong Kong is a city full of contrasting, from the western colonization history to the traditional Chinese background, from skyscrapers to street temples, from all the different races that live in this city. We embrace all the difference we have by celebrating the beauty of contrast. PROBLEM & SOLUTION /

?

Retail store design solely based on efficiency and functionality discourage consumer retail experience. To enhance customer retail experiences with the 4 values - the social, aesthetic, emotional and experiential. Applying design to material and spacial composition is crucial to how customers construct their shopping experience. / 2 \

SITE / The Hong Kong Opening Ceremony flagship store is located in a creative centered district, surrounded by residential and historical area. It is a perfect location for youthful, fun and company with a rich background story. This is also a historic project in an adapted reuse building. The building envelope is remained untouched following the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Code.

FLOORPLAN / Divided by four major programs of Retail, Cafe, Experience Room and Multi-purpose space located through out the building. The overall design of organic and geometric details were to create circulation and movement to balance the static massing. Each space has its own twist of feature following by the consistent concept of the contrast of “When the East meets West.

THEMEPARK EXPERIENCE / The solution to shopping discouragement is to construct a new shopping experience by enhancing the social, aesthetic, emotional and experiential values. Therefore the new flagship store is organized by themes of fashion styles instead of brands. Shopping should be a special experience that brings fun and excitement like going through a themepark.

SHOES & BAGS SECTION / On second floor, the shoes and handbags section is one of the biggest feature of all. The creation of this space is based on the local living style, which is eclectic yet organized in its own way. The use of mixing soft and hard edges created a visual chaotic and spacial balance. Sectioning the space using ceiling and flooring pattern construct a better circulation. Custom display fixture is an abstract form of the stacking of “mahjong” (tile game), this game is commonly played amount Hong Kong household. Also the included the custom “mahjong” display table next to the column. The display contains three hidden drawers for storage.
